For more detail on any of thearticles in this update, just click on theweblink at the end of each article.As always, we welcome anycomments you might have atthe address above.Mike CapaldiCommercialisation Director<strong>Edinburgh</strong> BioQuarterQueens’ Medical Research Institute,47 Little France Crescent,<strong>Edinburgh</strong>EH16 4TJFirst spin-out companies revealed<strong>Edinburgh</strong> BioQuarter announces itsfirst spin-outs this month, with theophthalmic diagnostics company i2eyebeing launched, as well as managementconsultancy NeuroORG.Incorporated in October 2010, i2eye hascreated a new ophthalmic diagnosticsdevice based on intellectual propertydeveloped at the University of <strong>Edinburgh</strong>.i2eye’s device provides a reliable test forlateral sight performance in those patientsold and very young for whom traditionalsight tests are confusing.Incorporating in November 2010, NeuroORGis an innovative management consultancythat engineers organisational performanceand design from the perspective of the humanbrain’s function with different organs, reducingmanagement engagement in organisationalprocesses that are intuitive, in the same wayas the body reacts to certain stimuli withoutreference to the brain. Its goal is to makeorganisations more efficient in their designand performance.Dr Mike Finnen, Head of Operations at<strong>Edinburgh</strong> BioQuarter, said: “We’re pleased tolead off our commercialisation work with thesetwo promising start-ups. Both companies havealready identified potential customers andhave clear business plans in place, with i2eyeestimating that they have a total addressablemarket of more than US$280 million.NeuroORG has already had expressionsof interest in its services from leadinginternational companies based in the UK, andwe’re confident that both organisations willhave positive revenue accruing within the firstyear of formation. Diane spent the last tenyears at Pfizer, latterly as a member of theGlobal R&D business development team.Diane was Global Business Developmentleader for Pfizer’s Regenerative MedicineGroup, and was the lead negotiator intheir groundbreaking R&D collaborationwith University College, London. She alsoled the acquisition of Axordia on behalf ofthe company. Prior to joining Pfizer, Dianewas part of the team working on the EMBLdatabase at the European Bio-informaticsInstitute. She began her career here in<strong>Edinburgh</strong>, working in the Kings Buildingson sex determination in fruit flies underProfessor Mary Bownes.Diane says, “BioQuarter representsa fantastic opportunity for me to dosomething creative and innovative basedon my previous experience in scienceand the pharmaceutical industry. The building will feature an incubatoron the ground floor which will house smallstart-up companies in a range of office andlab accommodation in a variety of suitesizes. There will be meeting rooms providedfor use by all tenants and a social/ informalnetworking area which will house a café,also serving the wider BioQuarter site.The two upper floors will provide flexibleaccommodation for office or laboratoryuse for more established companies.Jonathan Wilson, Project Manager at ScottishEnterprise, said: “Releasing 80,000 squarefeet of new accommodation at BioQuarterwill allow both start-up firms and internationalpharmaceutical companies the chance tolocate near three of the UK’s most significantmedical research institutes.
