One of the most influential dancemakerstoday, Ek is known for overthrowing ballet conventions and bringing to light thetormented psychology of classical characters. In Ek’s Giselle, the eponymous heroine is a barefoot island girl who ends up in alunatic asylum after the devastation of Albrecht’s betrayal. Profoundly moving anddeeply affecting, this reinterpretation examines the meaning of humanity throughGiselle’s inner struggle as she is torn by the forces of the powerful and the weak, andof life and death. While retaining the two-act narrative structure and original score byAdolphe Adam, Ek introduces new dimensions to the notion of love and redemptionagainst a commentary on social divisions and the line between normality andmadness. Both have received numerous accolades for their dancing and have beensteadily gaining international recognition for their choreography. Named one of the“Top 25 to Watch” in 2006 by Dance Magazine for choreography, Liang has createdworks for his previous companies and others such as the Kirov Ballet, the JoffreyBallet, the San Francisco Ballet, the Shanghai Ballet and the Washington Ballet.Xing’s first full-length work with his company in 2006, Nijinsky, met with enthusiasticreception. His solo piece, Existence, at Dance Salad 2009 was applauded by DanceEurope for its “simplicity of form and conceptual depth…structured in amazingly fluidmovements punctuated by finely detailed gestures”.14

The works they have created for Refractions draw from Asian philosophies indistinctive ways. As Above, So Below by Liang is loosely based on the Buddhistnotion of ‘bardo’, the world in between heaven and earth. Hauntingly beautiful andethereal, it expands on an idea that was first explored in Distant Cries, a pas de deuxhe created for the New York City Ballet in 2005. Xing’s Nameless is inspired by LaoTzu’s classic Tao Te Ching. It embraces the freedom and openness of creativity in achoreography that is imbued with an unbridled sense of curiosity and interactivity.Refractions is a collaboration between Singapore Dance Theatre and Esplanade. For more information and video clips, please visit www.dansfestival.com .Esplanade Theatre Studio3pm (Sat only)8pm(1hr 15min, with intermission)$30Limited Concessions for students, NSF and senior citizens: $20da:ns early bird packages (until 29 Aug)Save 20% with 4 or more tickets +Save 15% with 2 to 3 tickets +da:ns saving packages (from 30 Aug)Save 15% with 4 or more tickets +Save 10% with 2 to 3 tickets +No further savings on concession ticketsAll Upper Secondary Schools, JCs, CIs and ITEs may use Tote Board Arts Grant tosubsidise up to 60% for this programme. For media enquiries, please contact Sharon Wong at 6828 8310 or emailwsharon@esplanade.com22 & 23 Oct 2010, Fri & SatEsplanade PresentsPesta RayaMatah Atiby Atilah SoeryadjayaIndonesia“Tiji Tibeh, Mati Siji, Mati Kabeh…”For when one is gone, the others are also gone; where one is blessed, the others areblessed as well…Such are the words of a vow said by the valiant soldiers of R M Said, the first King ofJava. With a catchy sound like Jesus and Mary Chain, a grungy vibe like Green Day and acute-as-a-button frontman Noh, Hujan (“Rain”) is easily one of the most successfulindie-music bands Malaysia has to offer the world. This group of young menexemplifies the Y-generation’s rags to riches fairytale when some of their first fewdemos quickly became hits on myspace in 2005. Now, fans (affectionately termed as“Raingers”) can’t get enough of the band’s somewhat moody, reflective lyrics set tolilting, feel-good melodies like Mencari Konklusi, DugaanNya and Bila Aku SudahTiada. What does it mean when one is asked to “look after”? Is it aboutassuming responsibility and therefore being entrusted with something? Or could it beto turn one’s gaze to over the shoulder to an object behind him? The dictionary statesthe term’s meaning as “to employ one's sight, especially in a given direction or on agiven object”. Also to be considered is the act of devoting attention to an event whichhas already passed. What would one take away with him/her after looking; what isthe learning from an experience had and the application of lessons learnt for the nexttime. The looking, the clarification of possibilities and answers, the resonance after, the pondering all lead to the question of what we would take with us in order to goforward? It is the last quarter of the year again and things are either slowing down or gainingground, depending on which way one chooses to look at it.
