All cotssupplied in the villas comply with localsafety standards. All linen is launderedtogether so if you have concerns about cotlinen, please bring your own. Extra bedsare normally of the fold-up variety and aresuitable for children only up to the age of11 years old.Gas SupplyNot all the villas have a gas supply. Ifapplicable, the villa will usually be suppliedwith an orange coloured Butano gasbottle. In the unlikely event that the gasshould run out, please contact our local<strong>Villa</strong> Representative, who will arrange for areplacement. Where gas water heaters areused in villas, they are subject to an annualinspection by local qualified engineers. Acarbon monoxide detector is provided foryour additional peace of mind.ElectricityElectricity is 220 AC with continental twinplugs. Your villa electricity supply is notalways as constant as in the UK. You mayfind that the electricity will “trip off” if toomany appliances are used at once. Thishas become more apparent as we haveadded more equipment into the villas. Ifthis happens, simply turn off someappliances and reset the main fuse box(the location and full details will be inthe <strong>Villa</strong> Manual at the villa).InternetMost Resorts have an Internet accesspoint ‘Hot Spots’, where you can checkemails etc, and the location will be givento you in the <strong>Villa</strong> Manual. Some individualvillas have internet access. Please see your<strong>Villa</strong> Manual for more details.Air ConditioningMany villas now include airconditioning/heating in the bedrooms asstandard. Please see the individual villadescriptions. Some of these units operateon a sensor that will turn off the unit if theroom is not in use. Please consult the <strong>Villa</strong>Manual for full details. In the case of anymalfunction, we will endeavour to rectifythem as soon as possible, <strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Plus</strong>cannot be responsible for anynon-operational time that is out of ourcontrol.BarbecuesAll our villas have barbecues andwherever possible, brick built. It is notnormal for maids to clean the barbecueand we ask guests to leave them in areasonable and useable condition. Health and SafetyHealth and SafetySafety informationYou’ll find a <strong>Villa</strong> Manual with safetyinformation specific to your villa at theproperty. Please take the time on arrivalto familiarise yourselves with the safetyfeatures and layout of your villa. If you’retravelling with children then please takethe time to point out to any areas wherethey should take particular care such asthe pool and balconies. If you have anyquestions or concerns, then your <strong>Villa</strong>Representative will be happy to assist.Should you have an accident anywherein or around the villa you must report thisstraight away to your <strong>Villa</strong> Representative.SmokingSmoking is not permitted in any of ourvillas and we would request you onlysmoke outside the villa. Please do notleave cigarette stubs in the garden.Swimming poolWhilst the swimming pool is an essentialpart of the pleasure of holidaying for manypeople, if misused it can be dangerous:n Make sure you know the depths of thepool.n Please observe our strict no divingpolicy.n Do not run around the pool side -especially children with wet feet.n Do not go out of your depth unless youare a good swimmer.n Do not swim if you cannot see thebottom. If this is the case contact your<strong>Villa</strong> Representative as soon aspossible. Bad weather, thunderstorms and/or excess suntan oil(especially the non waterproof types),can turn the water cloudy. Use thepoolside shower before swimming tokeep the pool clean.n Children and fair skinned peopleshould wear a hat and T-shirt whilstin the pool as harmful ultra violet rayscan penetrate water up to a depth of1.5m and are reflected off the watersurface.n Beware of dangerous surfaces,drainage channels, slippery tiles orraised edges.n Always supervise children andnon-swimmers in and around the poolarea.n Do not swim if you have been drinkingalcohol, especially late at night.Report an accident immediately to your<strong>Villa</strong> Representative, who will attend thevilla. Any fault with the pool or itsequipment will be inspected andimmediate action taken to correct theproblem. If, in the opinion of the <strong>Villa</strong>Representative the pool must be closedfor your safety until a repair is facilitated asquickly as possible, you will beinstructed in writing to cease using thepool and our liability shall not exceed 33%of the villa rental portion of the holiday.Pool HeatingMany of our swimming pools have beenfitted with a Pool Heat Pump, making thepool 3°C to 5°C warmer at 1pm during theday than a non-heated pool under normalcircumstances. This provides the pool witha beneficial warming, but does not make ita “hot” pool. <strong>Villa</strong> <strong>Plus</strong> cannot beresponsible for any non-operational time,out of our control.In the case of any malfunction, we willendeavour to rectify them as soon aspossible and our liability shall not exceed£150 per villa per week in total. If the poolhas a cover, please use it as it willsignificantly increase the temperature ofthe water.Tap waterWater from the tap is generally ok forcooking purposes. For drinking werecommend you drink bottled water only.Sun bathingThe best, safest and longer lasting tansare built up gradually - but although mosttravellers are aware of the danger, manyholidays are still ruined by the effects ofsunburn. Do take extreme care not toover-expose yourself or your children(particularly young babies), especiallyduring the first few days. We suggest youstay under shade except for about 15minutes in the early morning or lateafternoon on the first day, graduallyincreasing the time as your skin becomesaccustomed to the sun. Even then be sureto use a suntan preparation of the correctfactor for your skin and apply it liberally atregular intervals, particularly afterswimming. Children should wearsun-hats and their shoulders should becovered as much as possible. We stronglyrecommend the use of good quality,waterproof sun creams especially when inand out of the pool or down at the beach.BeachesPlease be aware of the local safetyprecautions when you visit the beaches.At all times, for your own safety, complywith the suggestions of the local lifeguards,warning notices or flag systems. Shouldyou have any concerns consult a qualifiedauthority or your <strong>Villa</strong> Representative.BreakagesPlease notify our <strong>Villa</strong> Representativeshould you notice any shortfalls in thequality of furnishings/cleaning etc. In caseof breakages during your holiday, eitherreplace with a matching item or report thedamage to the <strong>Villa</strong> Representative. Places to visitPlaces to visitBeachesCorralejo. The white sandy beaches ofCorralejo stretch far and wide along theeast coast. The “Town” beach is ideal forfamilies as it’s clean, safe, sheltered andsurrounded by restaurants. Flag beach,by the two main hotels, is one of the bestplaces for water sports such as surfing,windsurfing and kite-boarding. Glassbeach is a little further along the road aswell as Drop beach.El Cotillo. On the west coast of the island,white sandy beaches stretch for miles tothe south of El Cotillo where the wavestend to be larger than average. Busesrun from Puerto del Rosario and fromCorralejo.Playa Blanca - Puerto del Rosario. Ashort walk from the centre of Puerto delRosario, the white sand stretches for abouthalf a mile. Popular with the locals andsurfers.Lobos Island. A trip to the Island of Loboswill give you access to a beautiful sandybeach which gently slopes into the water.There are plenty of fish to see if you wantto go snorkelling.Playa Chica, Puerto del RosarioA lovely beach which is popular atweekends with the Spanish.For more beaches pleasesee <strong>resort</strong> sections.AttractionsAntigua. One of the oldest villages on theisland. The church, Cruz de los Caldos isusually open to the public in the mornings.Visit the cultural centre at the fully restoredwindmill where there’s a craft shop.American Star Shipwreck. On a smallremote beach, Playa de Garcey, on thewest coast of <strong>Fuerteventura</strong> lies the wreckof a ship – the ‘American Star’. There isn’tmuch left now but seeing the remains stirsthe imagination.Betancuria. <strong>Fuerteventura</strong>’s formercapital. Visit Centro Insular de Artesania forarts and crafts, the museum, the restoredchurch or see artists at work at the CasaSanta Maria.Cofete. Well worth a visit for the viewsis Cofete which lies in one of the mostisolated corners of <strong>Fuerteventura</strong>. Thearea is via one of the small dirt tracks. Thebeach is stunning. A 4 x 4 is advisable.Gran Tarajal. One of the biggest townson the island where many concerts andfairs are held. Take a stroll along the beachpromenade. There’s a beautiful fountainbeside the church, with sea horsesspouting waterLajares. Ten minutes’ drive from Corralejois the village of Lajares which has a footballstadium, built in 1990. There’s also a ‘luchacanaria’ area (wrestling), a popular sport inthe Canaries. Visit the two windmills in thevillage.La Oliva. The village of La Oliva was thepolitical centre of <strong>Fuerteventura</strong> from theearly 17th-19th century and some of thebuildings still remain. Attractions: Casa delos Coroneles, or house of colonels; thebeautiful church in the centre and the CasaMane art centre.La Pared.On the North west coast ofJandia, La Pared has great restaurants.Spend a day at Bahia Mar restaurant withits swimming pool, water slide and achildren’s playground. Then stroll down tothe beach to enjoy breathtaking sunsets.Morro Jable. 100 km from the airport ,Morro Jable is one of the biggest <strong>resort</strong>son the island offering golden beaches,shops, bars and restaurants. From theharbour take the jet foil to Gran Canaria.Puerto Del Rosario. The capital of<strong>Fuerteventura</strong> since 1860, situated 6 kmfrom the airport. The harbour area is theoldest part of town where you can find oldCanarian-style houses. Festivals and EventsFestivals and EventsJanuaryNew Year, 1 January3 kings day, 6 January. Spanish children open their presents on the morningof 6th January. The evening before Three Kings arrive to bring presents to thechildren. There is a parade, with Three Kings on their camels thwoing sweetsto the children. The parade starts at the waterpark in Corralejo and marchesthrough the main street to the plaza.February and MarchThis is the Canary Islands most popular festival time of year, with the longesttradition and is celebrated all over all the islands. Thousands of tourists areattracted by the fun and colours of the carnival celebrations. Much of thespectacle of the carnival revolves around the Carnival Queen, who is elected ina grand gala that is held on a night that is considered one of the high points ofthe carnival. The funfairs are great for the kids.AugustAssumption of the Virgin Mary Day, 15 August. The Assumption isimportant to many Catholic and Orthodox Christians as the Virgin Mary’sheavenly birthday (the day that Mary was received into Heaven). This is apublic holiday through the whole of Spain.SeptemberOur Lady of La Peña, 16 September. One of the islands most importantfestivals, the procession pays hommage to Our Lady of The Rock - theIsland’s patron.OctoberNational day in Spain, 12 October. The National Day is a designateddate where a celebration marks the day celebrated in other countriesas Columbus Day, and commemorates the anniversary of ChristopherColumbus’s arrival in the Americas.Festivals and EventsAprilEaster, Throughout the Semana Santa you will be able to watch the solemnpre-Easter processions where sacred icons and religious statues are carriedthrough the streets of many villages and towns throughout the island.NovemberAll Saints Day, 1 November. often shortened to All Saints, is a solemnitycelebrated by parts of Western Christianity, in honour of all the saints, knownand unknown.MayCanarian day, 30 May. During the day children wear the typical Canarianoutfits of grey striped trousers, white shirt and waist coat for the boys. Thegirls will wear long skirts, blouses a scarf and a hat. They will be given sometraditional Canarian food such as the cheese for which <strong>Fuerteventura</strong> winsmany awards. Late in the evening, by the harbour in Puerto del Rosario youcan see lots of people all wearing the typical canarian clothing meeting on theevening of the 29th, to share food and then enjoy the music.If you do not wearthe correct clothing then you will not get in to the event. The 30th is a bankholiday in <strong>Fuerteventura</strong>.DecemberSpanish Constitution Day, 6 December. This day marks the Spanishconstitution that provided the way forward for the creation of a democraticsystem in Spain. This is a public holiday across all of Spain.16 17
