Dear Friend,I am pleased to present the 2006–2007 Annual Report of theShakespeare Theatre Company. As I look back on this 20thAnniversary season, I am struck by the breadth of the achievementsmade throughout this Company. We truly have so many reasonsto be proud. Our 2006–2007 season, a season of discovery andrediscovery, brought five fascinating plays to Washington, D.C. Webegan with Henrik Ibsen’s groundbreaking An Enemy of the Peopleand followed with my production of a new adaptation of GeorgeFarquhar’s The Beaux’ Stratagem. My production of Richard III kickedoff the citywide celebration Shakespeare in Washington, a feast ofmusic, theatre, film, art and dance that illustrated Shakespeare’ssweeping influence. The six-month festival included our first-everproduction of Titus Andronicus, directed by Gale Edwards, and myproduction of Hamlet, which featured Jeffrey Carlson in the title role.We continue to see widespread positive responses for our innovativeand creative work done in the community and in our schools. Oneremarkable illustration comes from a Text Alive! class. Even aftertheir Shakespeare class was dropped from the school’s curriculum, the students continued to fully commit to our program as an afterschoolelective. Of the teachers who completed our evaluation ofthe community program SHAKESPEARIENCE, 100 percent said theywould recommend the program to another teacher. I am particularlyproud of the after-school theatre program ShakesPEERS, whichwas recognized by First Lady Laura Bush with the Coming Up TallerAward from the President’s Committee on Arts and the Humanities. With new programs like “Bard Lunches” and new Master ActingClasses, the Education Department has strengthened these thrivingoutreach efforts, and we anticipate seeing the profound effects formany seasons to come. The Shakespeare Theatre Company owes the success of the past 20years to countless classical theatre enthusiasts throughout Washington,D.C., and across the country. To recognize the artists who have broughtthis organization to the pinnacle of artistic excellence, we presented anunprecedented 15 recipients with the Will Award, honoring the actingcompany who has brought vibrant life to the works on our stage. As theseason progressed, I witnessed our newest stage, Sidney Harman Hall, taking shape before my eyes. I am filled with gratitude to the thousands ofsupporters of the Harman Center for the Arts and all those who made thefuture of this company possible. The support of our exceptional Board of Trustees, brilliant artists, diligentstaff and volunteers, and our tremendous family of patrons, ticket-buyersand donors made possible the many accomplishments of the 2006–2007season.Thank you for your support and confidence in our work.Warmly,Michael KahnArtistic Director

THE SEASON12The Shakespeare Theatre Company’s 2006–2007 season began with a productionof Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People. The ground-breaking Norwegianplaywright’s 1882 drama spoke directly to contemporary Washington, D.C.,touching on environmental ethics and the personal cost of politics. Joseph Urlagave a thrilling performance as the unwavering Dr. Stockmann, who blows thewhistle on his brother, the mayor. Philip Goodwin brought a quiet menace to therole of the mayor, for which he won a Helen Hayes Award for Best SupportingActor. Director Kjetil Bang-Hansen, formerly of the Norwegian National Theatre, made his Company debut. Trey Graham of Washington City Paper praised theproduction as “a fierce attack on party politics and self-interested timidity,” andTim Plant of Metro Weekly found it “uncannily relevant.”The Beaux’ Stratagem marked a unique theatrical collaboration: in 1939, thegreat American playwright Thornton Wilder began an adaptation of GeorgeFarquhar’s 1707 comedy; at the behest of the Wilder estate, playwright KenLudwig completed the adaptation 65 years later. When this partnership overthree centuries reached the stage of the Shakespeare Theatre Company, ArtisticDirector Michael Kahn directed with style and energy, and Broadway veteransChristopher Innvar and Veanne Cox gave sparkling performances in their firstappearances with the Company. For his magical, ever-changing set, JamesKronzer won the Helen Hayes Award. The production charmed audiences andcritics alike, with Trey Graham of the Washington City Paper calling it “perfectlyenchanting.”The new year brought with it the beginning of the Shakespeare in Washingtoncelebration, a six-month festival in which more than 60 regional, national andinternational arts organizations presented a wide range of offerings connectedto the works of William Shakespeare (see page 18) . Shakespeare in Washingtonopened with a free, standing-room-only, all-star reading of Shakespeare’s TwelfthNight at the Kennedy Center, directed by Michael Kahn. Kahn also served ascurator of the festival, and his epic production of Shakespeare’s Richard III helpedto kick it off. Geraint Wyn Davies, an award-winning Cyrano in the company’s2004 season, returned to play the murderously ambitious king. Audiencespacked the theatre to watch Wyn Davies’ serpentine Richard seduce his way tothe throne, supported by an accomplished cast and Lee Savage’s monumentalset design. Peter Marks of The Washington Post called the production “lucid, beautifully articulated and intriguingly staged,” and USA Today’s Elysa Gardnerfound it “robustly imaginative.” The Washington Times’ Jayne Blanchard wrotethat Wyn Davies’ portrayal “glitters with a malevolent charm.”The Shakespeare Theatre Company continued its tradition of presenting lesserknownclassics with its staging of Shakespeare’s early revenge tragedy TitusAndronicus. Internationally acclaimed director Gale Edwards returned for the firsttime since her vibrant 2003 production of Richard III, and her staging of Titusbecame an impassioned plea to end the cycle of violence and revenge. Featuringpowerful performances and striking design, the show stunned audiences andcritics. Metro Weekly’s Kate Wingfield wrote that “Edwards succeeds in balancingthis parade of destruction with the emotional journeys Shakespeare offers,” whileBob Mondello of Washington City Paper hailed the production’s “visceral impact.”In May, the Shakespeare Theatre Company presented its annual Free For Allproduction at Carter Barron Amphitheatre in Rock Creek Park. The Companyrevived Michael Kahn’s 2006 staging of Shakespeare’s Love’s Labor’s Lost.Kahn set the play in 1960s India, and the production’s high-energy rock concert

atmosphere left audiences cheering. Stephen Fried, who had assisted Kahn onthe original production, remounted the play with a stellar (and largely new) cast.Nearly twenty-four thousand people saw this little-known comedy for free in thepark. The season and the Shakespeare in Washington celebration ended intriumph, with Michael Kahn’s production of Shakespeare’s masterpiece Hamlet. This ultra-modern staging featured sleek design and a surprisingly young cast. The play reunited Kahn with his former Juilliard student Jeffrey Carlson, nowan accomplished stage and screen actor. Carlson, first seen at the ShakespeareTheatre Company in 2005’s Lorenzaccio, played Hamlet as a troubled teenagerfaced with an impossible mission. The critics showered the production withpraise: “The Company’s done its characteristic deep meditation on the text,”wrote Washington City Paper’s Glen Weldon, “and come away with freshmoments that enliven Shakespeare’s oft-heard words.” “Carlson gives a tourde-forceperformance,” raved The Baltimore Sun’s Mary Carole McCauley. “Thecast, under the sure-handed direction of Michael Kahn, is close to flawless.”An Enemy of the Peopleby Henrik Isbendirected by Kjetil Bang-HansenSeptember 1 to October 31, 2006The Beaux’ Stratagemby George Farquharadapted by Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwigdirected by Michael KahnNovember 7 to December 31, 2006Titus Andronicusby William Shakespearedirected by Gale EdwardsApril 3 to May 20, 2007Richard IIIby William Shakespearedirected by Michael KahnJanuary 16 to March 18, 200713Love’s Labor’s Lostby William Shakespearedirected by Stephen Friedoriginal direction by Michael KahnMay 29 to June 3, 2007Earlier versions of this report misstated the total attendance at the summer 2007 Free For All as twenty-eight thousand people. The correct total attendance is 23,951 people. EDUCATION PROGRAMS“It’s a heck of a time and honestly if I wasn’t having fun doing it—I would not have been here for as longas I have. It showed me what I want to pursue in life—it’s helped me cultivate my appreciation for thestage and theatre. I just love doing it!” Hans Femrite, ShakesPEERS participant since 200414The 2006–2007 season began with the exciting news that the ShakesPEERSprogram was awarded the Coming Up Taller Award by the President’s Committeeon Arts and the Humanities. First Lady Laura Bush presented the award toEducation Director Dawn McAndrews and ShakesPEERS member Bahlya Yansane. The community-based, after-school theatre program invites students ages 14–19throughout the District of Columbia to explore their world through performanceand mentorship. ShakesPEERS and the Summer ShakesPEERS rehearsed andperformed three plays throughout the year: The Taming of the Shrew in the fall,Macbeth in the spring and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the summer. A totalof 66 teenagers participated and performed for more than 600 communitymembers. As well as working on analyzing and performing Shakespeare, studentsearned community service hours by bringing Shakespeare to their peers in thecommunity.Re:ACT aims to enable students to better analyze and appreciate Shakespeare’swork. Re:ACT’s workshops investigate Shakespeare’s text, the relevancy of thethemes of the plays to today’s society, and how to explore staging Shakespeare’swork by identifying clues and internal stage directions within the text.After-school partnerships draw direct connections between Shakespeare’ssonnets and other poets, such as Emily Dickinson, Paul Lawrence Dunbar andMaya Angelou, as well as to the political speeches and music of today. Thepartnerships can also be created to focus on scenes from a Shakespeare playexploring all aspects of theatre, including design elements, directing and acting. Our other large community program, the SHAKESPEARIENCE: Student Matineeprogram, welcomed 1,989 students from 71 classrooms in the Washington, D.C.,area to its student matinees. The matinee performances included An Enemyof the People by Henrik Ibsen, The Beaux’ Stratagem by George Farquhar andadapted by Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig, and Richard III and Titus Andronicusby William Shakespeare. Participating schools were provided with free or subsidizedtickets, free pre- and post-show workshops with Shakespeare Theatre Companyteaching artists, and the First Folio: Teacher’s Curriculum Guide written by theCompany’s Education Department. Participating students and teachers completedevaluations on the experience. One hundred percent of the teachers who completedthe evaluation said they would recommend SHAKESPEARIENCE to another teacher. The Shakespeare Theatre Company’s in-school, curriculum-enrichment program,Text Alive! invited teachers and students in grades 9–12 from the District ofColumbia and surrounding communities in Maryland and Virginia to exploreShakespeare’s work through a series of in-school, humanities-based workshopsand an in-depth rehearsal and performance process. For the 2006–2007 season, students worked on Richard III in the fall and Titus Andronicus in the spring.Participation by 29 classrooms involved 592 students and 33 teachers. Oneclassroom at Parkdale High School participated as an after-school elective whentheir Shakespeare Class was dropped from the school’s curriculum. Such wastheir commitment to the program that they put in all the work required on top oftheir regular school-work, even without the grade incentive. Assessments takenin all participating classes at the beginning and end of each semester gaugedimprovement in understanding and performing Shakespeare. In the spring semester, every single classroom demonstrated improvement in these areas as well asincreased energy and focus in the workshops.During the summer of 2007, Camp Shakespeare expanded to include the“Groundlings,” younger people ages 8–10, in the program. While older campersages 12–18 rehearsed and performed a Shakespeare play in two weeks, theGroundlings worked on scenes related to the work of the older students(Shakespeare’s Magic, Shakespeare’s Clowns, etc.). The three-week advanced

camp concentrated on the classic theatre form of Commedia dell’arte. Forthe first time, admission to the advanced camp was determined by audition. There were also three “satellite” sessions during the summer, bringing CampShakespeare to neighborhoods outside of Washington, D.C., (McLean andAlexandria, Virginia; and Bethesda, Maryland.) In total, Camp Shakespearegrew from 189 campers to more than 250 last year and produced 14 shows inits nine-week run.Classics in the Classroom explored theatre instruction, integration andassessment in grades pre-K through 12 by providing professional developmentopportunities for classroom teachers and specialists. Following an initialorientation, workshops covered Art of Making Theatre: Creating, Presenting,Responding; and Curriculum Connections. Resources provided to teachers inthe 2006–2007 season included one four-hour orientation and 10 three-hourworkshops, lesson plans aligned to the appropriate D.C. Standards of Learningfor each lesson introduced through our workshops, up to 45 ProfessionalLearning Units (three re-certification credits), and 11 opportunities to attendlive theatre productions throughout the D.C.-metro area. Thirty-nine D.C.teachers were accepted into the program. Final assessments showed that theteachers were twice as likely to use theatre to enhance student literacy, developcurriculum, assess student performance and enhance classroom management. The Shakespeare Theatre Company offered opportunities for the public toparticipate in a dialogue about Shakespeare through its Windows Discussions,Classics in Context, Post-Performance and Theological discussions. These eventswere facilitated by artists working on the productions and scholars in the fields ofclassic theatre, literature, history and political science. (In one case, psychologistMichael Houston provided his own psychological profile of Richard III.) Morethan 1,700 community members attended the free Windows and Classics inContext discussions. The season also saw the creation of the “Bard Lunches”pilot program that led to the 2007–2008 season’s Happenings at the Harman.During the Bard Lunches, participants enjoyed a lecture and discussion facilitatedby Shakespeare Theatre Company Trustee Ken Adelman about the Company’scurrent production. As part of the Shakespeare in Washington celebration, actorsfrom our production of Hamlet participated in a post-show discussion with actorsfrom the Studio Theatre’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. This season of Master Acting classes (MAC) was the most successful to date. The diverse class offerings included Acting Basics, Directing Shakespeare, Lifeof the Mask and The Fray (a class on Restoration physicality and dance). Veteraninstructors such as Shakespeare Theatre Company Members Floyd King andAndrew Long continued to teach in the program, and several new teaching artistswere brought on to increase the MAC offerings. A new class, Acting for BusinessProfessionals, became a staple of the class offerings, showing how theatre andimprovisation techniques can be used in the workplace.15Students perform in Text Alive! at IDEA Public Charter School.Photo by Joe McCary.Classics in the Classroom. 16During the 2006–2007 season, the Shakespeare Theatre Company employed fiveacting fellows, 15 administrative and production interns and three summer interns. The Training Programs Manager traveled as far as Arizona for college recruitmentfairs, increasing awareness about opportunities at the Shakespeare TheatreCompany. For the current season the Shakespeare Theatre Company recruitedeight acting fellows, 19 administrative and production interns, and six summerinterns. In anticipation of the opening of the Harman Center for the Arts, the EducationDepartment had to find a way to communicate with its 800-plus volunteersabout the changes in the theatre, while also more than doubling the volunteerpool. The Education Department undertook the enormous task of restructuringthe volunteer program by creating an online registration form to make theregistration process run more smoothly and hiring a Training ProgramsCoordinator to assist in interviewing and orienting volunteers. Each departmentdesignated a volunteer coordinator, who became the point of contact betweenthe department and volunteers. This made the process of locating willingvolunteers more efficient, and every department saw an increase in volunteerparticipation. At the close of the season, our Education Director, Dawn McAndrews, acceptedthe position of Artistic Director of the Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis. Dawnhad been with the theatre for eight years and was the creative force behind theDepartment’s training programs, such as the Theatre History Initiative, TeachingArtist Training Lab, Classics in the Classroom and the new SHAKESPEARIENCEYouth and Family Series.School ProgramsTotal ParticipantsText Alive! 563Re:ACT Residencies 3,885Camp Shakespeare 249Community ProgramsAfter-School Partnerships 76Core Company 73Young Company 87Summer ShakesPEERS 30SHAKESPEARIENCE: in-school workshops 1,375SHAKESPEARIENCE: matinees 2,163Students for Shakespeare 2,264Audience Enrichment ProgramsArt of Theatre: Senior 11Windows 1,100Classics in Context 650Training ProgramsMaster Acting Classes 400Classics in the Classroom: participating teachers 31Total for 2006–2007 12,957
