Student SpotlightMeet Joey Bynog andJessica TrichelWhy do you want to be a veterinarian?JOEY: There are many reasons I want to be a veterinarian.The pr<strong>of</strong>ession is well-respected, and I have always admiredveterinarians. I chose this as a career because I have astrong interest in medicine and animals and love interactingwith people. I also know that this is a career that will challengeme daily, and I look forward to it.JESSICA: Well there’s the cliché answer <strong>of</strong>, ‘I grew up withanimals, and it was just natural for me to go into veterinarymedicine,’ but there is more to the story than that. The truthis I love that veterinary medicine has so many options—fromsmall animals to large, general practice to specialization,industry to government, and so much more. I have a variety<strong>of</strong> career opportunities available to me at anypoint in my career. Also, as much as I lovethe animals, I love being around people wholove and share a special bond with thoseanimals. And so far I believe I am going tohave the best colleagues in any pr<strong>of</strong>ession!So those are just a few <strong>of</strong> the many reasonsI want to be a veterinarian.Why did you choose to apply toLSU for veterinary school?JOEY: I chose LSU for veterinary schooldue to its reputation as a great school andbecause I am from Louisiana.JESSICA: I am an LSU Tiger! But it came down to in-statetuition and the LSU 3 + 1 undergraduate veterinary programthat I was lucky enough to participate in and graduate with aBachelor’s in Animal Science after my first year <strong>of</strong> veterinaryschool (the 3 + 1 program allows students take three years <strong>of</strong>undergraduate courses at LSU in specific colleges and thencount the first year <strong>of</strong> veterinary school as the fourth year <strong>of</strong>coursework toward that particular undergraduate degree).Has your career choice changed since youapplied?JOEY: My career choice actually hasn’t changed sinceentering school.
