NMBQ / New Model Beauty Queen at 149
Colour colour and more colour! Love it! Check out this amazing
new shop with simplistic but comfortable cotton clothing designs
which are like pieces of artwork with wild prints. It is such a
fantastic concept and this Brunswick based manufacturer/
retailer specialises in new and emerging brands. The resources
include all forms of screen printing & garment manufacturing from
tailoring to swimwear. Owners Dale and Sharmaine believe in this
business the energy is critically important to nature. Everything is
produced under a strict ethical frame work as NMBQ is accredited
by (ECA) Ethical Clothing Australia. NMBQ's own house brands
are So forgotten, NMBQ , Ahambu printed and made in house.
Initially located in Fitzroy they moved to Brunswick because
they feel Brunswick is becoming the new creative focal point
of Melbourne. This energy is critically important to nature in a
business like NMBQ.

This new establishment launched their opening, just in time
for last years’ Christmas get-togethers. Celebratory drinks
and dinners gathered in the various pockets. Gifts for eating,
drinking and indulging were in abundance. What more could
you want !
Founders and Managers Stuart Brookshaw and Ruth Giffney
have transformed this beautiful building on the corner of
Albert St into an extremely modern relaxed Restaurant/ Café,
with an attached ‘ food store’ offering selected wines from
Italy and France, local and international brews with absolute
gourmet deli delights of cheeses, chocolates, salmon and
oils. WOW. Renown pastry chef Phillipa Sibley plans a well
balanced and specialty menu for all appetites but you can
just pop in for a great coffee, enjoy the atmosphere and be
well looked after.

Beirut Hellenic Bank at 597-601
Light, fresh, sparkling and atmospheric may sound like a
new Doctor’s surgery but this is in fact a lovely new BANK
…with serene colours and a contemporary interior design.
The bank is known as “Australia’s Premier Multicultural
Bank delivering excellent products and services to the local
market.” At Beirut Hellenic Bank they aim to provide nothing
but the best service to customers along with award winning
products. On meeting the staff and management, they
certainly gave an impression of ‘service with a smile’ and are
eager to help out and be involved with the local Community.
It is very beneficial to have a Bank up on the ‘hill’ amongst
newly renovated and developed shop frontages (ex Wheel
‘n the Wrecker “ site) where developments are expanding
all the way back to the railway line.

This is exactly what the name portrays… an exotic collection of
all those wonderful pampering but healthy products that we all
need. This family run ‘New Age Store’ specialises in the Psyhic
Arts... (and if you don’t know what that is… GO and find out!)
Catering to people from all walks of life, they stock a broad and
interesting range of retail needs like incense, herbs, resins,
candles, Tarot Cards, books and crystals. Believe it or not…
they help empower your psyche and enlighten your life… that’s
got to be helpful.
Helen has done an absolutely gorgeous make-over on this shop
and it’s a pure delight to ponder the goods she has on offer. So
if you are interested in the Pyshic Arts call by and say hello to
the spiritual staff who will happily guide you in the right direction!

Be part of this great day where thousands
of people come to the street. They wander
and watch , they meet friends, hear music,
observe the acts, browse the shops and stalls,
engage, eat , drink dance and basically have a
fantastic day.
If your shop is not in the designated area, come
along and be part of the party anyway.
If your shop is loacated in the area you should
have received the form from the organisers’
at the Mechanics Institute, asking if you are
opening or not. If you have not received this form
phone 9387 3376 and speak to Peter Leman.
The SRBA stage at Victoria Street is holding a
songwriters competiton, as well as handing out
the Sydney Road Shopping Guides, calendars
and shoulder bags.

Music Festival

Following the Party, will be hundreds of people
attending music shows at the Townhall,
Mechanics Institute and Phoenix Bar. Lots of
people come to eat in Sydney Road prior to the
shows and stay to enjoy the pubs afterwards....
so sparkel your windows and open your doors !!

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my
fellow business owners a very Happy New Year.
I hope that 2012 is a year filled with good health,
good humour and much prosperity for us all.
We live in interesting times: The World Bank
and IMF are predicting that the world economy
could slide towards another global recession and
here in Australia, the effects of the ‘two speed
economy’ are evident in all East Coast Capitals.
So what can we do?
Within Sydney Road Brunswick, there exists a
tremendous opportunity for us to support each
other by simply ‘Shopping Local’. Next time you
need a hammer, need an X-Ray, are looking for
that special gift or feel like a pastry: Consider
your fellow business operators, who are also your
neighbours in the Street. In one way or another,
we are all feeling the extra stress of operating in
a changing business climate and the message
of ‘thinking globally and acting locally’ has never
been more critical to our survival.
In the next few months, the SRBA will be
introducing some new programs which we hope,
will reinforce this message and we also plan to
give all traders the opportunity to better network
with each other and with other Sydney Road
stakeholders.
SRBA is made up of all 522 business operators
and 400 property owners who are located
between Brunswick Road and Moreland Road
and we hope that each and every one of you
will consider what unique skill you can bring to
your neighbours and fellow SRBA members that
will improve the profitability, the health and the
happiness of Sydney Road in the year ahead.

A message from
DON BOSCO
in Sydney Road.
The Don Bosco Opportunity shop has now
been in operation for 10 years.
We would like to thank all our valued
customers and over 40 volunteers who have
helped us to support the Don Bosco Youth
Centre and Hostel in Brunswick and the Don
Bosco Salesian Missions in East Timor and
the Pacific.
Over $600,000 has been distributed during
the 10 years.
We have 2 shops in Sydney Road, at 368
near Albert St and 711 near the Youth
Centre.
The Don Bosco Youth Centre and Hostel
was opened in 1940. The Hostel provides
accommodation for 40 young men. The
large Youth Centre provides recreational
facilities and activities for all young boys
and girls after School time, weekends and
holidays. Many School’s utilize the Youth
Centre facilities.

Did you know that this is the ONLY store
in the WORLD that has 99.9% all Greek
merchandise??? There is something similar
in New York and Paris but they combine
other elements .....so...we have a unique
gem, here in Sydney Road Brunswick !
Denas Milonis moved from Adelaide and
started in Edward St Brunswick in 1988 and
after 22 years here in Sydney Road, he
certainly knows what the customer wants. If
he hasn’t got it, it will be sourced!
A large collection catering for the elderly
and ‘new age’, there are Greek books from
history, novels, cooking, children’s and also
keeps up with the latest releases in ‘Greek
bolckbuster’ DVD’s. The CD’s line a whole
wall and Denas stresses that these are all
original and “squeeky clean”... ( no copies).
When I visited the shop, Denas took the
extra care to personally check every CD
this customer bought, because he knew
they were to be played at a Wedding where
everything has to be perfect.
What fantastic service and care.
He also supplies Greek magazines and a
small range of Religious Greek icons.
Angela, who mostly works in the shop , is
kept very busy with loads of emails and
phone requests, inbetween attending
customers darting in and out, seeking their
special items.
So, this is our first ‘ Feature’ on one of
your neighbours who has a unique shop in
Sydney Road Brunswick . More to come!

Women Showcase”
Moreland Business Women’s Network
is calling for Moreland business women who
would like to participate in a pilot ‘”expo”
as part of the “Honouring Women in
Moreland Awards 2012” on Thursday 15
March at the Coburg Town Hall.
The pilot “expo” will be showcasing Moreland
business women, the services and products
they provide. It will be a great opportunity for
local business women to promote what they
do, advertise their wares etc.
And who knows in years to come Moreland
Business Women Showcase may become a
standalone event in its own right.
• This will be a great opportunity to exhibit
your business to the Moreland community.
• There will be no fee involved.
• We have a limited amount of space
available, so first in best dressed.
• You may wish to share a trestle table with
another business women.
• First preference will be given to women
whose business is in Moreland.
• If you are a performer you may wish to
offer your services for the event.

The new business Parking Permits are
obtainable from the Moreland City Council.
Vacancies exist for businesses to take
up an annual permit ( 2 for each business
if required) to park in two ‘ trial’ off-street
parking areas. Marked by the red lines,
these areas accomodate about 30 cars.
Owners must display the permit certificate
on the front window, but these permits allow
owners & staff to PARK legally
ALL DAY.
There will be more pressure to find long term
parking when the Sensors/ pods are active
at the end of March...so NOW is the time to
think about taking up a Business Permit for
all-day parking.
These parks may mean walking a short
distance to your shop but it is ideal for those
who do not have rear parking on their
premises.
Annual Permits are $80 per year.
