RUNNING ACK
TO FOOTSCRAY
The TMSV held a tram tour on 24 March,
commemorating 50 years since the closure
of the Footscray local lines. It was decided
to investigate the prospect of a tour late last
year and by early this year we had been
permitted by Yarra Trams to charter a tram
for our tour. Although we originally wanted
a W class, it became apparent very early in
the planning process that this would not be
possible and we decided to use Z3 158 the
“Royal Tram”, which Yarra Trams happily
chartered to us.
Over 40 people attended the tour,
including: Yarra Trams CSO and Marketing
Manager Ian Stokes and Yarra Trams driver
and Society member John Whiting. We left
at 1pm from Brunswick depot, travelled into
the City and had our first photo stop at
Franklin Street, where we also picked up a
few passengers.
Then down Victoria Street
and into Elizabeth Street,
along the route 55 through
Royal Park and replicated the
clichéd “train over tram”
photo. We continued to
Footscray, where
unfortunately for us, a block
car was operating, preventing
us from laying up in the
terminus. Instead, we were
dropped off the tram and it
went back towards
Maribyrnong, shunting at
River Street to come back
and pick us up. Next, we headed back into
the City via Moonee Ponds and West
Maribyrnong, and went down the the new
track installed in Footscray Road, where we
had another photo stop.
After returning to
Brunswick Depot there
was a BBQ and social
gathering at Warr Park,
Brunswick, which was
attended by about 15.
This was a great
opportunity to talk about
the day and trams in
genera.l.
The day ended at about
9pm when it started to
get dark and the few still
at the BBQ decided to go
home.
It was an enjoyable and rewarding day,
with all attendants stating their pleasure at
how the day had gone and expressing
interest in possible future tours, which we
are looking at trying to organise, hopefully
with ever-improving results, attributed to all
that we have learned in the process of
organising this tour.
We would like to extend our greatest
gratitude towards Yarra Trams who
graciously allowed and supported the
charter at a substantial discount to their
usual rates, and to two Yarra Trams
employees, David Coverdale, Special Events
Administrator and Ian Stokes, Marketing
Department. The tour would not have been
able to happen without the support from
Yarra Trams and the work of these two
individuals. Thanks Yarra Trams, David and
Ian! Liam Davies
At the time (in 1972) the TMSV was not
impressed.
However, time is the proof of success and
the Trust is now running a highly successful
The tour to commemorate the 50th anniversary of closure of the Footscray local lines was quite an event (congrats to Liam). Some
45 years earlier, the TMSV ran a similar tour - using T180 - now a TMSV car on loan to Hawthorn and X2 676 now in the
Hawthorn collection. They are seen here at the Leeds St terminus. Thanks to Mal for the picture and details.
Photo: coffeeselect.blogspot.com.au/
Following up Mal Rowe’s story about the Bendigo Provincial Tramways, your ed. did a google which came up with a link to the
coffeeselect blog and this pic of Bendigo steamer no 5. The connection appears to be that at Coffeeselect’s Bendigo HQ you can -
or could in June 2010 - play Trugo, the Newport Workshops game. Good one, coffeeselect.
MELBOURNE'S FIRST
TRAFFIC LIGHTS?
Many of our members are well
aware of the MMTB tramway signal
box at St Kilda Junction and the
remaining box at Franklin St.
An earlier generation of signal
boxes were installed by the
Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus
Co - either to control traffic or for
the more mundane purpose of
changing the points to send trams in
the right direction.
One box was at the South East
corner of Swanston St and Collins St
in Melbourne. It was there to enable
traffic in Swanston St to be halted
while the Collins St cable trams
coasted across the intersection.
They had to coast because their
cables passed beneath the Swanston
St cables and the gripman had to
release the cable before crossing the
intersection. If the tram had to stop
mid way, it was 'all out and push'!
The first picture shows the signal in
early days, when it was an extension
to a standard Melbourne gaslight.
In its final days, in the second pic,
with the gas light gone and electric
trams in Swanston St, the signal is
visible just left of the MMTB bus.
The signal box is directly behind it.
One of those new electric trams is
S164 - one of our trams on loan to
Hawthorn Depot.
Shortly after the electric trams took
over in Swanston St the signal box
was no longer needed - the news
clipping records its removal from
service.
Melbourne Tramway Museum has
a similar box which stood for many
years in St Kilda Rd at the corner of
Domain Rd.
That box probably never controlled
signals, just the points to send the
Toorak trams off to the East.
The Domain Rd box is currently
under restoration to complement
the Twentyman Cable Tram
Collection at Bylands.
WHAT WOULD
YOU KNOW?
Scanning back through the archives, the Ed. came upon a quiz
in the February 1972 edition that forty years on might have you
digging very deep into your memories of the Good Old Days
when trams really were trams and worth getting excited about.
Incidentally, the pictures might be traps. How will you do?
At the Museum’s December meeting,
held in Malvern Town HaIl, a different
type of activity was tried. This took the
form of a very successful quiz on
various tramway topics including
historical facts, general knowledge and
Museum affairs. The quiz was
administered using five groups of
approximately six members to give
written answers to 60 questions.
The group led by member Ian
Stanley won the competition and each
team member was presented with a
tramway lithograph which was
donated by Sales Dept. For those
readers who were unable to attend the
meeting, we include a selection of the
VIEW FROM
THE CHAIR
Since my last report in December
there are a number of developments
to report to Members and friends.
MEN’S SHED TURNING HISTORIC
BRISTOL BUILDING INTO A VERY
SMARTSHED
A sneak peek through a window
will reveal the great strides being
made by our new friends and tenants,
the Kilmore Men’s Shed.
Now in occupation, the Men’s Shed
men are making impressive progress:
walls relined, entry foyer being
prepared for use, electricity being
connected to southern end of
building and general cleaning and
tidying completed.
Still to come are ceiling lining, new
tank and water reticulation, toilet in
eastern annex.
And, if that’s not enough, at the
northern end of the building we will
have a new MTM reception and sales
area together with members’ facilities.
Two Men’s Shed members have
become TMSV members.
HAIL DAMAGES EXHIBITION
BUILDING BUT DOESN’T DENT
ENTHUSIASM
During the hailstorms earlier this
year the transparent sections of the
roof in the exhibition building
suffered damage. We are presently
awaiting quotations for repairs.
Visitors will notice that we now
have new fencing and gate along the
Union Lane boundary of the property.
This is courtesy of our neighbouring
farmer Geoff on the western side.
We now have a professional curator
details, some biographical details of
whom are on page two of this issue.
The annual Mitchell Shire local
tourism Expo will be held at
Wellington Square in Wallan late in
May. We plan to participate again
(this will be our third year) as it is a
great way to connect with the local
community. Come along and support
your society.
The Footscray Tramways
Commemorative tour was a
resounding success as reported in
Liam’s piece in Running Back.
And yet another car club has has
chosen Bylands for a car club visit.
The Lancia Car Club will visit at
11am on 6 May for an inspection
and morning tea.
At our March Board meeting
Adrian Ponton, Registrar Tourist &
Heritage Railways was in attendance
to discuss current issues and assist in
our plans for the immediate future.
This was extremely helpful and more
details will follow shortly.
One of our ongoing concerns has
been grass control on the site and
R.O.W., so investigations are
proceeding to decide on a suitable
mower set-up to reduce the high cost
of hiring a contractor.
As noted elsewhere, a site visit to
Bylands from the area inspector of
WorkSafe Victoria was very helpful
and a number of worthwhile
improvements to our safety systems
are being introduced as a result of
our discussions.
Yes, yes, it isn’t a Melbourne car, but this cheery
