CATALOGUE 270
School textbooks can be an interesting guide to a government’s
commitment to ideological control of its people.
History texts in particular often either gloss over with euphemisms, or
eliminate entirely, events which governments would rather forget.
Japanese textbooks make hardly any mention of Japanese activities in
WWII and it comes as surprise to many 20 something year olds there
that there was a war at all.
Chinese textbooks refer to the famine following the Great Leap Forward
in 1958 as “Three Years of Economic Difficulty” although an estimated
30 million people died. The events at Tiananmen Square have been
entirely erased though it was previously called “The Political
Disturbance of 1989”.
A Saudi education minister has stated that the purpose of education is
to ensure social obedience to the ruler, which seems to me to be a very
narrow view of its purpose.
So I suppose we are fortunate in Australia that textbooks here are
relatively uncensored, apart from some efforts to ensure political
correctness.
It seems that in the future, textbooks will be delivered digitally to
students’ computers or e-readers which will enable texts to be changed
readily, and eliminate the risk of old versions with unpalatable information
turning up to cause embarrassment to
those in power.

NSW State Library ‘Digital Excellence’ project
launched
The State Library of NSW has launched two multi-million dollar
projects which will provide worldwide access to its most iconic
and historically significant documents and objects. The NSW
Government will contribute $32.6 million over the next four years
to help fast track the Library’s digitisation program and upgrade
its digital infrastructure. This is in addition to the $23 million
funding (2008-2013) to enable the Library to create electronic
records and make its entire heritage collection searchable online
by July 2013.
‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ chess board handcrafted
by Sir John Tenniel discovered
Last year an Alice-themed chess board was bought by rare books
dealer Jake Fior. Featuring 16 ink and watercolour images along
its border, Fior discovered, after research, that it was a unique
piece made in 1875 and illustrated by Sir John Tenniel, with the
initials ‘JT’ on each of the board’s corners matching those in
early editions of ‘Alice’. Fior and a partner are reproducing the
chess board in a limited edition of 150 for £3,500 each, with the
pictures copied and silk printed, and using gold leaf and
marquetry.
