(7) Development of a critical mind and the ability to solve patient<br />
problems within a particular sociocultural setting, harnessing<br />
available community services<br />
(8) Ability to maintain a good medical recording system, with<br />
particular regard to a defined community, making use of tools such<br />
as family genogram etc<br />
(9) Being a role model in health behaviour, and the ability to organize<br />
and actively engage in community care programmes, focusing on<br />
promoting and maintaining health of the community including<br />
dental health care<br />
(10) Development in a particular area of expertise in family medicine<br />
and contribute to new knowledge e.g., counselling for psychosocial<br />
problems<br />
(11) Continued professional development and contribution to national<br />
development through knowledge management.<br />
The following areas are suggested as suitable contents for specialist level<br />
training. Modifications may be required to suit each country’s context.<br />
(1) Knowledge and skills for life-saving procedures<br />
� Medical<br />
� Obstetric<br />
� Paediatric, including neonatal resuscitation<br />
� Surgical<br />
� Trauma<br />
(2) Maintaining health<br />
� Maternal and child health: Prevention, screening, health<br />
education, nutritional guidance and immunization<br />
• Ante-natal and post-natal check up<br />
• Well baby clinic<br />
• <strong>Family</strong> planning procedures
