BY JEANETTE W. BENNETTPhotographs courtesy Magleby ConstructionWhen Ron and Sue Mika moved to Utah in 2004from Boston, they purchased an existing home inAlpine to fit their family of nine. But it was the land next door that made them feel athome. They immediately began dreaming of what theycould build on the property. A horse barn … maybe.A garage for their snowmobiles and four-wheelers …perhaps. A guest home large enough to host frequentvisitors, including Sue’s uncle Mitt Romney …definitely. The 8,000-square-foot guest home wasdesigned by JSA Architects. The sitemanager was Russ Taylor with MaglebyCompanies. “Russ was so accommodating,”Sue Mika says. “I would talk to himin the barn about all the little tiny things— like I wanted a certain bolt over here.”Russ even went above and beyond whenthe Mikas’ daughter drove right throughthe garage door of their main home.Russ immediately began helping themsolve the crisis.www.uvmag.com ■ Utah Valley Magazine 35
