The President’s Message
Cal Campbell - President, Nebraska Safari Club
It’s the time of year for getting the yard in shape, spring clean up, graduations,
And TURKEY HUNTING, but also time to be thinking about the
2013 Nebraska Safari Club Convention. Please note a location change;
it will be at the Fabulous Mahoney State Park, and SAC Aerospace
museum. So make your room/cabin reservation early etc.
Now is when we start booking donations and vendors. In order to make
it a success we need input on what you “our members” would like to
have at the auction, or what outfitter or vendor you would like to have
at our show. If you want to go dove hunting, peacock bass fishing, what
record book whitetails, or non hunting destinations such as a trip to
the Masters golf tournament, NASCAR, the Super Bowl, certain artwork
or bronzes from a particular artist, given ample time most of
these things can be acquired. However to make the convention
successful and enjoyable we need to have input from our members.
Please feel free to give me or any board member a call and we will try
to accommodate this.
Mark June 9th on your calendar, Wayne and Tim Braun, of B&B
Outfitters in Atkinson Nebraska has graciously offered to open up their
hunting concession for a spring outing. Look for more details elsewhere
in the newsletter.
Also Mark your Calendars for August 18 for our annual Summer BBQ
at John and Diane Poehling’s home and trophy room at Woodcliff Lake
south of Fremont Nebraska; our members always have a good time.
More details will be available in the next newsletter, regarding raffles,
and auction items.
Thanks again to all of you
who attended this year’s
convention, I am looking
forward to seeing you at these
events, in the meantime enjoy
the summer.
Happy Hunting to Everyone
Transcaspian Urial Hunting with Everett “Buzz” Madson, M.D.
Pictured is a Transcaspian Urial that I shot
when I was in Kansas in January of 2012. I
had gone down there in 2011 to look over
and hunt some whitetails. The property and operation
is owned by Stan Christensen of Trophy Kansas
Whitetails.
I happened to see this Transcaspian Urial that he
had there, which was a beautiful specimen. He had
obtained it from the San Diego zoo as excess
animals when it was a lamb. He estimates that it is
about 9-10 years old at the present time. I told him
I would be interested in harvesting it if he was going
to want to put it down, he called me and we set
up a time in January to go down and to harvest
the animal.
The Urial ends up being, according to the
measurements, the new world record bettering the
previous world record by about 3 inches. I had
wanted to hunt this animal in the wild, but
Turkmenistan had closed down its hunting some 7
or 8 years ago and it looks as if it will never open
again for hunting the Transcaspian Urial in the wild.
It was a great hunt and he has some excellent
whitetails available for people who might be
interested.
