I have always had an interest in shells. To me each shell, whether broken or whole, is a treasure fromGod. For that reason I cannot just go for a walk on the beach. My eyes immediately go to each of thesetreasures, and I find myself more engrossed with the shell rather than with the person I might bewalking with! Until I joined the club I thought I was quite unique in my appreciation for shells. Now I canwalk the beach with others who have the same admiration as I do.I am very excited about SSC and all I have learned and how everyone welcomed me with open arms. Iam looking forward to helping our club grow. My goal this year was to update some of our technology, and I feel the club was successful in doing so. My other goal was to help some of us begin learningscientific names for the shells we find. Okay, so we can use a little more practice, but hey, if each of uslearned one new scientific name this year, that’s one more than we knew before, right? As for nextyear, one of my goals is to try to bring in some high school students as members (The wheels arealready turning!)Joanne ChmielewskiI have been an active club member for many years. I have at one time or another been VP,Corresponding Secretary/Editor, Member at Large, Field Trip coordinator and Show Chairman. Myinterests are collecting shells on field trips around FL and the Caribbean for over sixty years (I lived inFL as a child!). I collect mainly Epitonium & Strombidae families. My other shelling interest includesmaking flowers with a group of club members, which we then sell at the annual Shell Show in February.Lynn GaulinFrom my earliest memories of vacations on Cape Cod, I’ve had a fascination for anythingaquatic, particularly shells. The best shelling I’ve done was during the 18 months I lived inAustralia. I don’t take live shells (can’t imagine killing something so that I can have itshome), & Australia was fantastic for finding beautiful empty shells on the beaches. Whenmy husband & I moved to FL in 2003 I joined the SSC with my sister, Susan Eckler. This will be my 3 rd year as Recording Secretary. I would like to see more new members, keepingthe meetings interesting and fast paced seems to have helped our membership increase in recentyears. Member retention is crucial and an area we need to work on. It is an honor to serve themembership as Recording Secretary, and I take the position very seriously.Jan McSweenA lifelong Floridian, I have been collecting shells seriously for over 35 years by wading, snorkeling and diving. I have been active in the both the local and international shellworld including judging at shows, writing articles for popular shelling magazines (as wellas my new book on the Caribbean Turridae). I have traveled extensively to collect shells, and guided many shell-collecting trips in Florida and foreign countries. I have served anumber of times as President of the SSC and was the newsletter editor for a number ofyears and I look forward to taking over as the editor once again as the CorrespondingSecretary.Peggy WilliamsMy wife Judy & I became interested in shelling in 1972 when we began snorkeling &SCUBA diving while living in Micronesia for 12 years. In addition to collecting shells, wehave done a lot of trading worldwide over the years. I have also enjoyed photographingthe live mollusks to show the animals characteristics. Moving here in 2004 renewed ourinterest in beach & snorkel collecting. Favorite families include cowries, cones, miters, themurex and olives.Jim Wedge
