The Heat Can Make You Crazy
By Tim Bunkley
I love to drive. Which is a good thing since it is how I have been paying the bills for the past 7 or so
years. There is just something about getting behind the wheel and knowing most of my day will be spent
there that is calming and satisfying. I've done other things. Things that were more prestigious, made more
money and had better hours. But none of them compare to facing the challenges of getting somewhere on
time and getting to see a changing landscape on a daily basis. I feel I am at home on the road and consider
myself to be extremely fortunate to be doing something that I love.
So, you can imagine my concern when this past summer I began to feel somewhat disenchanted with the
road and what I had always considered to be a great profession. At first I thought it was that my job was
changing...... maybe. Then I thought it was worry about the future, rising cost of doing business and economic
uncertainty. I was worried. What
2004 Alfa Romeo Spider
if I was falling out of love? What
would I do next? How do you replace
something you have fallen
for? All this worry and today I realized
it was all for nothing.
I was called to head out to College
Station. I thought, you know I will
take the Alfa. It needs to stretch its
legs, and I am starting early enough
I can run with the top down for a
while. Sure enough, the day
dawned sunny but not too hot and
once I had gotten outside the concrete slap, slap, slap of the highways around the Metroplex, the road
smoothed out into asphalt and the piney woods started to come into view and I knew that I was back in love
with the road once again. Around noon, the heat started to accumulate, so up went the top and on came the
AC. But, it never go so hot that the anemic little blower of the Alfa's AC could not keep up.
The day started pleasant with the top down and ended just as pleasant with the top up. And now I sit here
at the computer excited about tomorrow, another day behind the wheel. In retrospect, I believe it was the
heat of this summer that had me so disenchanted with things. You learn to ignore it and take it as part of a
day of doing business. You remember to dress for it and stay hydrated. Your work vehicle has a great AC,
why would it be a factor? Yet for a relentless 100 + days at 100+ degrees, it takes it toll. On your thinking,
your behavior and your outlook. Summer is waning now and I am looking forward to more pleasant, albeit,
shorter days.
I am excited once again about doing things in and around cars. I am ready for the fall. I am ready to do
the thing I most love in the world. Drive.

Our sister club in Austin has planned an exciting weekend Oct 21 – Oct 23
for Golden Girls 2011 and the theme is aptly named “Town and Country.”
O C T O B E R 2 0 1 1
The weekend is centered around LBJ's hometown of Johnson City and some events will take place in town
while others will take us out to the surrounding countryside. Friday’s itinerary includes a wine tasting at a local
vineyard, a tour of LBJ Ranch including the Texas Whitehouse, a cruise-in with local car clubs in the late after-
noon followed by an evening out at a bistro.
Saturday’s car show will be held in town at the Johnson Settlement while the evening barbeque and awards
ceremony will be held at an elegant ranch house in nearby Walnut Springs. Sunday there is still more – a
drive to Wimberley for lunch and then on to San Marcos to visit Dick’s Classic Garage. The weekend will not
only be about the cars, it will also be educational and a lot of fun! For details about Golden Girls 2011 and to
register, go to http://www.goldengirls2011.com/1901.html

August Cruise Night at
Circle Grill
By Fred Burkle
R e c e n t e v e n t s
O C T O B E R 2 0 1 1
Our cruise at Circle Grill in August was one of our best yet. We had 15 cars and about 30 members in attendance
– a most excellent crowd!
We were seated in the same dining room as last year and we had it to ourselves but this time our wait
staff was a mother and son team. The food was delicious as usual but we didn’t do dessert there. Instead,
Steve and Ron invited us to their home for dessert.
After we finished eating, we hung out in the parking lot for a bit and then headed over Steve and Ron’s
where they had strawberry shortcake and ice cream. We all had a relaxing time chatting and playing with
their two dogs that just loved the attention. Steve and Ron had just finished a remodel of their kitchen with
new everything – wall texture, tile, cabinets, countertop, and appliances – and it turned out beautifully. Luckily
there were neither spills nor anything broken, so I guessed it passed its CCCC initiation! Thank you Steve
and Ron for inviting us over. We enjoyed the dessert and the camaraderie. It was a good cruise and a good
time after.

Mopar Mini-Nationals
By Fred Burkle
O C T O B E R 2 0 1 1
R e c e n t e v e n t s
Some CCCC members drove out
to the “Land of Gar” (Garland) on
Saturday morning, Sep 3, to the
Garland Central Park for the Mopar
Mini-Nationals. Just like at a Ford
show where there are a lot of Mustangs,
there were a lot of Cudas and
Challengers. Even still, there was a
good representation of all Chrysler
Corp cars.
We almost missed the oldest car
there. We had made our way
around the show field and were getting
ready to leave when in comes
this absolutely gorgeous white 1955
C300. As the car drove through the gate, all the CCCC guys and many others were drawn to it like ants to a
picnic basket. We literally followed the car until it was parked. As it was maneuvering into its “berth,” we
couldn’t help but notice the silence – it was quiet and shifts from forward to reverse and back were almost imperceptible.
Out of the approximately 1,700 produced, only 200+ are known to exist and we got to see one. It
made our day! I’ve since learned the C300 was named for its Coupe body style and 300 hp Hemi.
There was an original 1970 red and white Challenger convertible that stood out from the other Challengers
because it was original and not modified at all. And it still
gets driven.
There were a couple of first-generation Chargers – one
red and the other yellow. Both were in superlative condition
and displayed their fold-down rear seats. True these cars
were based on the Coronet, but with their unique front clip,
hidden headlights, concealed turn signals, full-width tail
lamps and the sexy fastback roofline, I think that fact is well
hidden.
Other Chrysler Corp models on display were a 1967 Newport Coupe. It was in great shape and, to use the
old ad, this “Chrysler says ’67 so beautifully.”
At the end of the show field was a 1956 (I think) Imperial. She ran and was in pretty good shape but she
was a bit tired and needed some TLC.
Even still, the car had a “presence.”
Afterwards, we drove over to Babe’s
Chicken for lunch. Since it was still early
for the lunch crowd, we kind of had the
place to ourselves. Not sure what prompted
it, but I wound up with a chicken head
on my head. I’m sure it was Tim’s fault…
