Art Brussels - Mezzanine - Hall 3 next to the Hisk Café - Access: public
The Swiss curator, Samuel Gross will host a number of Art Talks in a new, informal
format.
Formed in the MAMCO in Genève and currently developing an important project for
an art space linked to a private collection, he is well informed on issues such as
constructions of art scenes and the development of private collections.
At the occasion of the Art Talks, Samuel Gross proposes to share some reflections
related to the term of “collection” with several actors in a relax and spontaneous
manner.
These Art Talks translate what Art Brussels aims to be: a platform for collectors,
curators and artists to meet and exchange their visions and experiences.
Artist Projects
4 artists, all living and working in Brussels participate in the Artist Projects 2012. The
Artist Projects are interventions/creations designed for Art Brussels.
Valérie Mannaerts has drawn the VIP cards, the cover of the fair catalogue and the
Fair Guide.
For the VIP tickets, Mannaerts created a group of 4 related designs. These designs are
pattern-like drawings that are somehow reminiscent of honeycomb, wave, window,
and roof tile motifs. However, because of their irregular lines and indefinable colour
shades, these drawings never become mere graphic patterns. Mannaerts scratched the
lines of the design in a dark ground of oil pastel, allowing a palette of impure colours to
emerge. Mannaerts creates an interesting tension through her very personal treatment
of the glossy industrial-looking and very coveted VIP card. For the Fair Guide and for
the catalogue cover, however, she has adopted a different strategy. Here, she opted for
a playful creation using collage techniques and drawing instead of the more obvious
computerised graphic methods. Mannaerts is represented by Gallery Elisa Platteau &
Cie (stand: 3A-11).
Nicolas Provost shows the art video (stand: 3A-52), a new art video, titled Moving
Stories about two young passengers adventuring towards a mysterious future. ‘Moving
Stories strings together fragments of flying passenger airplanes. Gleaming in the
sunlight, they glide high above the clouds. From the very first moment, the seductive
footage, completely aiming at escapism, contrasts with the ominous, somewhat sinister
soundtrack. Over this sound, Provost places a dialogue between a man and a woman.
Provost plays once more with the grammar and the codes of (Hollywood) cinema. With a
limited number of images, an absorbing soundtrack and a minimal story line, the artist
tries to stimulate the viewers’ imagination to the maximum. (text: Ive Stevenheydens)
Nicolas Provost is represented by Tim Van Laere Gallery (stand: 3C-26).
Sarah Deboosere and Charles Blondeel have been commissioned to design the carrier
bag for Art Brussels 2012. Both graduated from the HISK (Ghent) and have worked
together as the artists duo “Sarah & Charles” since 2004. The commission for the design
of a 2-dimensional work was not entirely obvious since their work mainly consists of
installations and videos. The result is a graphic image, a brief, technical description
of sound effects as they are used in the world of film. The description, when read by
the viewer, creates a cinematic narrative in his/her imagination. Sarah & Charles are
represented by Gallery van der Mieden (stand: 3B-37).
