1HEMCHANDRACHARYA NORTH GUJARAT UNIVERSITY,PATANORDINANCE RELATING TO MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY(M. PHIL.) IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION(ONE-YEAR DEGREE COURSE)1. INFORMATION OF THE COURSE:The name of <strong>the</strong> course shall be Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) inPhysical Education and total number of seats in M. Phil. is 10 and allare payment seats. The duration of <strong>the</strong> course of instruction for <strong>the</strong>Degree of Master of Philosophy in Physical Education shall be oneyear and <strong>the</strong> examination shall be held at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> academicyear.2. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION TO THE COURSE:2.1 A candidate shall be eligible to appear in admission test if he/shehas passed any one of <strong>the</strong> following examinations with at least 55%marks for General and 50% marks for SC/ST candidates andSport-persons who have won medal in <strong>the</strong> National/Inter-VarsityCompetition in <strong>the</strong> preceeding four years.2.1.1 Master of Physical Education (Two years Degree Course) from<strong>University</strong> department or any institute recognized by<strong>University</strong>.ORM.A./M.Sc. in Physical Education (Two years duration)ORAny o<strong>the</strong>r qualification considered as equivalent by any Indian<strong>University</strong> or Board appointed by <strong>the</strong> Department of Education of aState or after obtaining Indian/Foreign qualification recognized asequivalent to those mentioned above.2.1.2 Participation in atleast <strong>the</strong> Inter-Varsity/National leveltournament in a game recognized by <strong>the</strong> Association of IndianUniversities/Indian Olympic Association.3. TESTING AREA:3.1 Physical Fitness - 50 marks3.2 Knowledge Test (Written) - 100 marks4. OTHER AREAS FOR CONSIDERATION:4.1 Game Proficiency - 25 marks4.2 Academic Weightage - 25 marksTotal -200 marks


25. PROCEDURE FOR CONDUCTING TEST & AWARD OF MARKS:5.1 Physical Fitness: Bonus Points will be awarded in Physical Fitnesson <strong>the</strong> basis of performance.5.2 Game Proficiency: The marks for Game Proficiency will be providedon production of Participation/ Merit Certificate in Games/Sportswhich are included in <strong>the</strong> Teaching Programme of <strong>the</strong> Institute(Aquatics, Artistic Gymnastics, Badminton, Basketball, BestPhysique, Cricket, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo,Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Power-Lifting, Rhythmic Gymnastics, SquashRackets, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball, Weight-Lifting and Yoga. The criteria for awarding bonus marks is as per<strong>University</strong> norms.5.3 Knowledge Test (Written): An objective type question paper will beadministered on <strong>the</strong> basis of <strong>the</strong> courses taught in MPE carrying 100marks. Duration of written test will be 90 minutes.5.4 Academic Weightage: One mark each shall be provided for everypercent mark above 55% marks in <strong>the</strong> qualifying examination,subject to a maximum of 15 marks.5.5 Research Weightage : Those candidates who have completed Thesisin lieu of a paper in M.P.E. Final will be awarded 10 marks.6. QUALIFYING MARKS:To qualify in <strong>the</strong> Admission Test a candidate must score <strong>the</strong> followingmarks or above:6.1 Physical Fitness and Game proficiency combined - 38 marks6.2 Knowledge Test (Written) - 50 marks6.3 Total (including Academic Weightage) - 100 marks7. MEDICAL TEST:All provisionally selected candidates shall go through medical test tobe conducted by <strong>the</strong> Medical officer of <strong>the</strong> Institute or anyone deputedon his/her behalf.Those who failed in <strong>the</strong> Medical Test will not be admitted. Acandidate may not be rejected on <strong>the</strong> ground of colour blindnessunless it is an acute case.8. Admission shall be made only from <strong>the</strong> qualified candidates inAdmission Test strictly according to Merit, depending upon <strong>the</strong>availability of <strong>the</strong> seats for regular students and students to beadmitted on payment basis.9. ADMISSION PROCEDURE:9.1 Those who fulfill stipulated conditions in clause 2.1 of <strong>the</strong>se <strong>rules</strong>shall be eligible to take admission test.9.2 A committee consisting of atleast three faculty members shall beconstituted to screen applications to ascertain eligibility ofcandidates. Only eligible candidates shall be allowed to takeadmission tests. Doubtful cases shall be referred to Vice Chancellorthrough Head of <strong>the</strong> Department (Teacher Education) whose decisionin this regard shall be final.

Marks + 20Practical except <strong>the</strong> subject Management of Physical Education)and minimum 50% marks are necessary to pass in each paper.(ii) Each Candidate has to select one of <strong>the</strong> following at <strong>the</strong> time ofregistration.III–AB– Sports PsychologyIII–AB– Physiology of ExerciseIII–AB– Management of Physical EducationIII–AB– Sports BiomechanicsSESSIONAL:13.2 PART-II(i) DISSERTATION 125+25 viva-voce 150 75(ii) Field base experience 50 25Total 600 300Every Candidate shall be required to submit a dissertation. Theproblem selected for dissertation shall ordinarily be from <strong>the</strong> area ofspecialization.13.2.1 The proposal of <strong>the</strong> research problem for <strong>the</strong> Dissertationshould include Introduction, Review of Related Literature,Procedure chapter in brief and Bibliography and be presented ata colloquium. Three typed copies shall be submitted before <strong>the</strong>prescribed date for <strong>the</strong> perusal of <strong>the</strong> Colloquium Committee.13.2.2 Three copies of completed dissertation shall be submitted by <strong>the</strong>second week of <strong>the</strong> March or any date notified by <strong>the</strong> H.O.D.(TE). If a candidate does not submit dissertation on or beforeprescribed date his/her result will be withheld and expenditureincurred in rearranging <strong>the</strong> examination will be borne by <strong>the</strong>candidate.


513.2.3 The dissertation under Part –II shall be examined by aCommittee of two experts (one internal and one external)possessing a Ph.D. degree in Physical Education or in <strong>the</strong> Areaof Specialization. The advisor shall be <strong>the</strong> internal examiner in<strong>the</strong> committee. There shall be a Viva-voce examination on <strong>the</strong>Dissertation and this shall also be conducted by <strong>the</strong> sameCommittee. Those who fail in Part-II (Dissertation) shall bepermitted to resubmit <strong>the</strong> dissertation with changes suggestedand reappear for <strong>the</strong> Viva-voce examination)13.2.4 If a candidate fails Dissertation but secures pass marks inwritten papers, <strong>the</strong> written paper’s marks obtained by <strong>the</strong>candidate shall be carried forward.13.2.5 Such candidates who pass both Part-I and Part-II separatelyshall be declared eligible for <strong>the</strong> award of M. Phil. degree inPhysical Education, no division will be awarded in M. Phil.examination. No merit list of <strong>the</strong> M. Phil. examination will bedeclared.14. EXAMINATION:Medium of Examination shall be <strong>Gujarat</strong>i or English. A Candidate whohas been admitted as per conditions laid down in clauses 2 to 8 of<strong>the</strong>se <strong>rules</strong> -14.1 Shall be eligible to appear in M. Phil. in Physical EducationExamination, if he/she has completed regular course of study.14.2 “Regular course of Study” means having attended at least 85%lectures in Theory Subjects, provided fur<strong>the</strong>r that <strong>the</strong> followingtypes of absence shall be treated as period spent on duty:-14.2.1 Actual course of participation and travel in Inter-Varsitytournaments or any State or National level tournament forwhich prior approval has been obtained.14.2.2 Any responsibility given by <strong>the</strong> Institute for officiating,coaching or participating in o<strong>the</strong>r programme dulyrecognized by <strong>the</strong> Institute.14.2.3 Medical leave, personal leave of any kind shall not be treatedas duty leave under any circumstances and will thus betreated as absence for <strong>the</strong> purpose of ascertaining eligibilityto appear in final examination of any part.14.3 A student has to pass examination at <strong>the</strong> end of Academic yearin Part-A (Theory) including Dissertation. The result ofexamination shall be given separately in mark sheet underseparate heads in Theory and Dissertation. Division shall bementioned on <strong>the</strong> basis of aggregate marks obtained in Part-ATheory and part-II degree shall have a separate mentionregarding Specialization of <strong>the</strong> student passed in M. Phil.14.4 A candidate must complete <strong>the</strong> degree of M. Phil. and pass <strong>the</strong>final examination within a total period of three years fromhis/her first admission to M. Phil. course.


615. A candidate must submit his/her Dissertation in <strong>the</strong> second week ofMarch for <strong>the</strong> final examination and present himself/herself for Vivavoceexamination. The candidate will submit three typed copies ofDissertation duly signed by <strong>the</strong> Supervisor and countersigned by <strong>the</strong>Head of <strong>the</strong> Department of Teacher Education of <strong>the</strong> Institute.16. If a candidate fails in Theory paper/papers, he/she shall appear as anEx-student. If a student fails in dissertation but secures pass marksin written papers <strong>the</strong> candidate will be permitted to complete hisrequirement for dissertation in subsequent year and on doing so, willbe awarded <strong>the</strong> degree of Master of Philosophy.17. Those candidates who fail in one or more papers in <strong>the</strong> M. Philexamination held in April will appear as an Ex-student. A student whofails in sessionals in any of <strong>the</strong> part shall be declared failed. SessionalMarks shall be submitted at <strong>the</strong> end of Academic Session.18. DIVISION:18.1 The Division of passing shall be declared on successful completion of<strong>the</strong> course in <strong>the</strong> following manner:-70% and above : First Class with Distinction60% and below 70% : First Division50% and above but below 60% : Second Division19. MEDIUM OF EXAMINATION: Medium of examination shall be<strong>Gujarat</strong>i / English.
