In April and May 2010burglaries increased in the Bonington ward andpolice classed it as an area of concern. Patrolswere increased in hot spot areas and policeofficers made regular visits to known offenders toensure they knew they were being monitored. InMarch 2011 the number of recorded burglaries forthis area had reduced by 30%.In other areas of the borough, buildings whichhave been repeatedly targeted by burglars havebeen made more secure thanks to partnershipfunding. Windows have been fitted with alarmsand home owners were given timers for their lightswitches. Gedling Homes removed overgrownfoliage at Bourne Mews in Netherfield and arereplacing all entrance doors to the flats withmore secure ones, as well as introducing an entrysystem. Our CCTV system has played a big part in helpingto reduce alcohol related violence and shop theftin our town centres, through the Pubwatch andShopwatch radio schemes. Residents have alsoplayed their part in driving down crime. Thanks tomembers of the Netherfield community comingforward to give evidence, we were able tosuccessfully obtain an Antisocial Behaviour Order(ASBO) against a Netherfield teenager.Private hire taxis in thearea are being given asplash of colour witha new and improvedlicensing plate, in a bidto make licensed taxismore visible.Robert Gash withthe new plateThe new licensingplates have been inplace since 1 April and substantially improve theprevious design. The new taxi plates are now incolour, so are easier for customers to see, theyare slightly larger and are more secure as theyare tamperproof and have a security hologram.Although a few of the older plates are still in use,as these licenses come up for renewal they willgradually be phased out and everybody will usingthe newer versions.Pictured above is taxi driver Robert Gash withhis new plates. Mr Gash said they are a lot morecolourful and help people to see who and whatkind of taxi they are.“They are not as easily transferable as the old plates, which mean that they’re more secure and whenyou see a taxi with one of the new Gedling licenceplates it is easy to see it is a proper licensed taxi.Anything that encourages the public to use localtaxis and trust they are getting a proper professionalservice is a great thing in our eyes.”The oldlicence plate.Still in useby some taxisThe newimprovedlicence plateNews
