MACHINE TOOLSThe term ‘machine tools’ covers a wide range ofmachinery used for cutting, removing or formingmetal to produce components which are subsequentlyassembled into engineering products. Simply, machinetools are “machines that produce machines”. Importantsectors of the engineering industry include the manufactureof motor vehicles, aerospace products and generalindustrial equipment. These sectors, together with thesubcontractors that supply them, make up the customerbase for supplies of machine tools. Thus, it is generallyviewed as a strategic sector for a country.In 2008, the top 28 countries’ production of machine toolstotaled US 82-billion. That is 15% higher than the valuethose same nations created in 2007.ProductionMachine tools production started in the mid `60s in Turkeywith the production of lathes by private companies. Inline with national industrialization efforts state institutionsundertook the leading role for the machine tools industry.The first step was the licensing agreements signed withtwo world famous machine tools manufacturers. After along, hard period of work the first Turkish-made machinetool came off the production line in 1984. In the followingyears various machine tools (universal/vertical millingmachines, universal/turret turning lathes, cylindrical/surface grinding machines, tool grinding machines, radialgrinding machines etc.) have been produced in largenumbers in Turkey.During this period CNC machining centers were introducedto the world market. Both global and Turkish industrialmanufacturers demanded these hi-tech, computercontrolled machine tools. The Turkish machine toolsindustry has been able to meet this new demand sincethe beginning of the ‘90s. The process of manufacturingbetter, innovative machine tools with higher technology isan ongoing effort among machine tools manufacturers inTurkey. MACHINE TOOLSAccording to worldwide statistics for the year 2008, Turkeyis the 15th largest manufacturer among 28 machine toolmanufacturing countries, with a production value of US $583.2 million. 29% of the total is from metal cutting typemachining centers and the remaining 71% from metalforming type machine tools. The Turkish machine toolsindustry partially meets domestic demand and about88.6% of the production was exported in 2008.Today the Turkish machine tools industry manufacturesand exports various kinds of machine tools including;CNC/conventional machining centers, CNC/conventionallathes, CNC/conventional milling machines, CNC/conventional grinding machines, bending machines,bordering machines, honing machines, presses, shears,press breaks, CNC brakes, CNC cutting machines,profile cutting machines, band saws, seaming machines,welding machines (MIG-MAG, TIG-WIG), planningmachines, thicknessing machines, rip saws, resawingmachines, CNC/conventional gear hobbing machines,spindle moulding machines, corner notchers, calibratingand polishing machines, chamfering machines for stones,trimming machines for stones, splitting machines, logcarriages, dust sucking machines, parts and componentsof machines tools (electronic components, computercontrols, CNCs, NCs, cam switches, tool holders,chucks, load lifting magnets, magnetic chucks, mandrels,hydraulic cylinders and spare parts, bar feeders for CNClathes, tooling dies, universal frames/cabinets, CNCcabinets, work benches, material cabinets, tool cabinetsetc) and other metal, stone, glass, wood and plasticprocessing machines.The Turkish machine tools industry and sub-industries arecomposed of about 480 companies. These companiesare mainly SME’s which have less than 200 employees.About 10 companies are large-scale manufacturers ofmachine tools and parts/components/auxillaries.Manufacturing sites are mainly located in the Marmara,Central Anatolian and Aegean Regions of Turkey. MACHINE TOOLSExportsTurkey’s machine tools exports were US $293 million in2009. The Turkish machine tools industry exports hightechmachining centers as well as metal-forming typemachine tools. Machine tools that are exported aremainly metal-forming types, which take a 77% sharefrom total machine tools exports.
