Ave discipuli!ANCIENT HISTORYOn Monday 2nd of August, two Year 11 AncientHistory classes met up outside the Michiebuilding at UQ for a tour of The R.D. Milns AntiquitiesMuseum, and for some ‘hands-on’ activities.Although the Museum was only a singleroom, it was filled with all sorts of fascinatingartefacts from Ancient Egypt, Sumer, Greeceand Rome. These included pottery, glassware, coins and figurines, with our personal highlightsbeing a large decorated funeral Krater (potteryvase), pottery votive offerings shaped like animalsand, for Mrs Bell, the large collection ofhand-stamped coins. It was very interesting tocompare and contrast pieces from so manydifferent cultures and time periods. Not only didwe get a chance to see the artefacts, but wewere also able to actually touch (with gloveson, of course) a collection of fragments fromthe Greek site of Olympia, where the ancientOlympics were held. Assisted and educated bytwo very helpful post-graduates, Julian andJames, we learnt about the history of this site, which was continuously used by the Greeksand Romans for c.a.1500 years. Many of uswere particularly impressed by the fingerprintsthat could still be seen and felt in some of themore roughly made pottery pieces; marks froma sculptor who has been dead for centuries. The consensus among our classmates wasthat this was an amazing experience and manyof us hope that we will be able to visit the museumagain.YEAR 12 GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIPURBAN RENEWAL IN INNER-CITYBRISBANEThe Year 12 Geography class recently spent theday exploring inner Brisbane to investigate the conceptof urban renewal. We visited Kelvin Grove UrbanVillage, community housing projects in FortitudeValley, the wool stores in Teneriffe and finallya space of land ready to be redeveloped in Hamilton. The students were busy recording notes andlearning about the revitalisation of urban areas toprovide a greater range of housing, employmentand social activities. Students are now working hardto prepare a field trip report and deciding upon thebest strategy to develop the vacant Hamilton site. Thanks also to the expertise of Mr McGrath (seniorGeography teacher) who joined us on this excursion.Ms Kate ValeSenior Geography TeacherOutside the Powerhouse at New Farm, Left to right:Calum Gates, Sai Karlen, Kim Moses, Dom Hutton,Erin Fogarty, Cecil Munjanja, Carl Gust, KiaraMoriarty, Suzie Love, Adele Todd, Jess Rose, JoDe Guzman, Tom Bloomfield, Josephine Zavagliaand Ms Vale.Flavia Rota (Fiona Wheeler)Caesarius Pilus (Jonathan Ebert)Year 11 Ancient History Students12
