Sand appears to havebeen concentrated there. Most roots were found in the Aand AC horizon, but roots extended down through thecompacted Cl horizon on coarse fragment faces. Thecompacted zone ended higher in this profile than in theother profiles . Distinct zones of sandstone andsiltstone weathering were observed in this profile.This was also apparent in the mixed SS/SiS pits of thesurface amendment experiment.82
