Originally part of a J&J operating company called Ethicon, Ethicon Endo-Surgery
was formed as a separate company in 1992 to develop endoscopic (minimally
Since then, Ethicon Endo-Surgery has expanded into energy-based instruments and
medical diagnostics. Since 1995 Ethicon Endo-Surgery has been the market leader
A serious responsibility
Ethicon Endo-Surgery believes it has a broad human responsibility: to every patient
who benefits from Ethicon Endo-Surgery products and procedures, to the doctors
and nurses who depend on its products, and to its own employees.
Ethicon Endo-Surgery also maintains a commitment to help the broader community
beyond the operating table.
In 1943 Johnson & Johnson wrote ‘Our Credo’, setting out the guiding ethical
principles for J&J companies. The credo states that the companies’ first
responsibility is to all those “who use our products and services,” from doctors and
parents to patients. It then stresses the responsibility to employees, communities
and stockholders.
In 2008 William C. Weldon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Johnson &
Johnson, based a new company Statement of Caring on Our Credo:
“Caring for the world . . . one person at a time inspires and unites the people of
Johnson & Johnson. We embrace research and science - bringing innovative ideas,
products and services to advance the health and well-being of people. Employees of
the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies work with partners in health care to
touch the lives of over a billion people every day, throughout the world.”
The company supports Johnson & Johnson’s philanthropic efforts and communitybased
partnerships. These focus on making long-term differences in human health
by taking on some of the world’s major health challenges. Efforts are built around
three key areas; saving and improving the lives of women and children; building the
skills of local community health workers; and tackling the spread of diseases and
related stigma and disability in poor communities.
Ethicon Endo-Surgery and Johnson & Johnson also remain committed to
environmental protection. In 1999 Johnson & Johnson said it would reduce its
companies’ CO2 emissions from 1990 levels by 7% by 2010. By the end of 2006,
Johnson & Johnson companies had cut CO2 emissions by 16.8%. This outstanding
result came about through a combination of increased energy efficiency, clean,
renewable power and offsets, and on-site renewable energy and co-generation.
