Three empirical patterns motivate thisresearch: workers who leave school in a bad economy persistently earn lower wages and work in lessprestigious jobs, individuals’ labor market outcomes are associated with health outcomes, and themacroeconomy affects health. I use macroeconomic fluctuations between 1976 and 1989, and variationacross states, as a quasi-experiment to identify the persistent health effects. Five health outcomes areexamined: physical functioning, chronic conditions, self-reported health, mental functioning, anddepressive symptoms. I draw data from the recently available National Longitudinal Survey of Youth1979 Cohort Age 40 Health supplement. I find that men who leave school in a bad economy have worsehealth at age 40 than men who leave school in a stronger economy. The results are robust to variouseconometric specifications, including the use of instrumental variables to correct for the potentialendogeneity of the timing and location of leaving school. Supplementary analyses suggest that the healtheffects may operate through labor market outcomes, marital status, fertility, and medical care utilization. This study provides the first published evidence on the persistent health effects of leaving school in a badeconomy. The findings suggest that men who left school during the recession of 2007-09 may experiencepersistently poor careers and health as a result.
