<strong>What</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Firestarter</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> <strong>Wheel</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>12</strong> <strong>Step</strong> Program?The <strong>Medicine</strong> <strong>Wheel</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>12</strong> <strong>Step</strong> program was developed to provide a culturallyappropriate <strong>12</strong> <strong>Step</strong> program for Native American people. Th<strong>is</strong> program wasdeveloped by <strong>White</strong> B<strong>is</strong>on, based upon Teachings of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> <strong>Wheel</strong>, <strong>the</strong>Cycle of Life <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Four Laws of Change. The teachings of th<strong>is</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> <strong>and</strong><strong>12</strong> <strong>Step</strong> program are also used in our Warrior Down program making it a prerequ<strong>is</strong>itefor participating in that training.How <strong>the</strong> Process Works:The <strong>Medicine</strong> <strong>Wheel</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>12</strong> <strong>Step</strong> program <strong>is</strong> designed to teach individuals howto facilitate Circles of Recovery in <strong>the</strong>ir own communities. The participants of th<strong>is</strong>program watch videos that explain <strong>Medicine</strong> <strong>Wheel</strong> teachings <strong>and</strong> apply <strong>the</strong>m to<strong>the</strong> <strong>Step</strong>s using <strong>the</strong> work book provided. In addition, participants share <strong>the</strong>irinsights <strong>and</strong> experiences in a talking circle. They also learn how to mind map<strong>the</strong>ir own innate knowledge around <strong>the</strong>se teachings <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n apply thatknowledge to <strong>the</strong>ir daily lives <strong>and</strong> dec<strong>is</strong>ion making processes. Th<strong>is</strong> program <strong>is</strong>also designed to help <strong>the</strong> individual develop trust, autonomy, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r healthyfeelings <strong>and</strong> thought patterns that will help <strong>the</strong>m to grow emotionally, mentally,physically, <strong>and</strong> spiritually.<strong>What</strong> <strong>is</strong> Warrior Down?Warrior Down <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> cry used to signify that a warrior has been wounded orincapacitated in some way <strong>and</strong> needs help. The Warrior Down program createsa response team that provides <strong>the</strong> support <strong>and</strong> finds <strong>the</strong> resources to get thatwarrior back into <strong>the</strong>ir recovery process. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> a peer to peer program that <strong>is</strong>designed to equip Native Americans in recovery to provide recovery support <strong>and</strong>community referrals for o<strong>the</strong>rs in recovery.Purpose:Provide a relapse prevention <strong>and</strong> recovery support program for Native Americanswho are completing treatment, returning to <strong>the</strong> community from incarceration,<strong>and</strong> those who have been working on <strong>the</strong>ir recovery journey using traditionalmethods or <strong>12</strong> <strong>Step</strong> methods <strong>and</strong> who w<strong>is</strong>h to provide support to o<strong>the</strong>rsexperiencing <strong>the</strong> same <strong>is</strong>sues. The program <strong>is</strong> also structured to provide supportfor <strong>the</strong> healthy re-integration of th<strong>is</strong> individual into h<strong>is</strong> or her family. The programsupports healthy marriages, effective parenting, sober lifestyles, responsiblefa<strong>the</strong>rhood, connection with cultural traditions <strong>and</strong> spiritual practices. Recovery <strong>is</strong>not just staying sober. It <strong>is</strong> a way of experiencing life through new eyes, newthoughts, <strong>and</strong> a new spirit. Re-establ<strong>is</strong>hing one’s life following treatment foralcohol or substance abuse, or following incarceration requires a communityeffort.
