California Jobless Rate DeclinesCalifornia’s jobless rate fell <strong>to</strong> from 10.6 <strong>to</strong> 10.2 percent in September in what may be <strong>the</strong> largestdrop in 36 years, <strong>the</strong> state announced Friday.The numbers from <strong>the</strong> Employment Development Department show <strong>the</strong> largest tumble in <strong>the</strong>monthly unemployment rate since 1976, said Kevin Callori, a spokesman for <strong>the</strong> department. Calloriwarned that <strong>the</strong> California figures are preliminary and could be revised next month.The rate in September was more than a full percentage point better than <strong>the</strong> 11.7 percentunemployment rate at <strong>the</strong> same time a year ago. “It is a significant drop,” Callori said. “It is anencouraging sign, and it is consistent with <strong>the</strong> overall trend which is increasing jobs.”California added 8,500 nonfarm payroll jobs last month, showing <strong>the</strong> state’s economy wascontinuing its gradual improvement. Half a dozen sec<strong>to</strong>rs grew, including education, finance andtransportation. The biggest gains were seen in <strong>the</strong> leisure and hospitality sec<strong>to</strong>r, which added10,700 jobs. Five sec<strong>to</strong>rs reported job losses, including construction and manufacturing and miningand logging.3. She also discussed with me <strong>the</strong>his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> William <strong>Hartnell</strong>, his wifeMaria Teresa de la Guerra <strong>Hartnell</strong>,<strong>the</strong>ir families, and <strong>the</strong>ir influence in <strong>the</strong>growth and development <strong>of</strong> California.Ms. Moser will turn 100 years old in2013 and we certainly look forward <strong>to</strong>her next visit <strong>to</strong> <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong>.2 | P a g e
