Coaching Legends Honored at Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 20 th Home Football GameMarv Grim, Alex Golomeic, and Gary Shaw are living legends. Toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y represent some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>most successful coaches in California Community <strong>College</strong>s and in <strong>the</strong> nation. On Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 20, 2012<strong>the</strong>se legends were honored at <strong>the</strong> half time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pan<strong>the</strong>rs home football game vs. Cabrillo<strong>College</strong>.Marv Grim was <strong>the</strong> head football coach at <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong> from 1976-1989. He is <strong>the</strong> all-timewinningest football coach in <strong>the</strong> college's his<strong>to</strong>ry. His career record is 106-36-4 from 1976-1989.His win <strong>to</strong>tal is 38 more than <strong>the</strong> second highest <strong>to</strong>tal – 68 by Arvin Smith. Only once during <strong>the</strong>1980s did a Marv Grim team win less than eight games (5-5 in 1986). He had one stretch from 1978-1983 where <strong>the</strong>y lost only one game five times in six years. Under his leadership <strong>the</strong> college had astreak <strong>of</strong> over 5 years without losing a conference game. He also served as <strong>the</strong> college's athleticdirec<strong>to</strong>r from 1990-2002. Marv retired in 2002, but is still working as a part-time instruc<strong>to</strong>r for <strong>the</strong>college.Alex Golomeic was <strong>the</strong> men's soccer coach at <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong> from 1979-2006 and <strong>the</strong> men's tenniscoach from 1979-1996. As <strong>the</strong> men's soccer coach his career record was 240-181-51 and his team'searned 12 consecutive NorCal Championships appearances. His teams made it <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> semi finals 7times and one team was a state championship semi finalist. They won 6 Coast ConferenceChampionships.As <strong>the</strong> men's head tennis coach his career record was 183-112. His teams earned 2 nd place threetimes in <strong>the</strong> NorCal Tennis Championships, finished second in <strong>the</strong> California State TennisChampionships, and <strong>the</strong>y won three Coast Conference Championships. Coach Golomeic received<strong>the</strong> following awards:Coast Conference Soccer Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year 1988, 1993, 1995, 2005Nor<strong>the</strong>rn California Soccer Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year 1988, 1997, 1996, 2004California Community <strong>College</strong> Coaches Association Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year 1989National Soccer Coaches <strong>of</strong> America 1989, 1996, 2004Coast Conference Tennis Coach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> YearGary Shaw was <strong>the</strong> head track coach at <strong>Hartnell</strong> Coach from 1970-2006 and was <strong>the</strong> head men'scross country coach from 1988-2005. He also served as an assistant football coach from 1969-1986.Coach Shaw had 65 track/cross country student-athletes receive athletic scholarships <strong>to</strong> four-yearcolleges and universities. California Jobless Rate DeclinesCalifornia’s jobless rate fell <strong>to</strong> from 10.6 <strong>to</strong> 10.2 percent in September in what may be <strong>the</strong> largestdrop in 36 years, <strong>the</strong> state announced Friday.The numbers from <strong>the</strong> Employment Development Department show <strong>the</strong> largest tumble in <strong>the</strong>monthly unemployment rate since 1976, said Kevin Callori, a spokesman for <strong>the</strong> department. Calloriwarned that <strong>the</strong> California figures are preliminary and could be revised next month.The rate in September was more than a full percentage point better than <strong>the</strong> 11.7 percentunemployment rate at <strong>the</strong> same time a year ago. “It is a significant drop,” Callori said. “It is anencouraging sign, and it is consistent with <strong>the</strong> overall trend which is increasing jobs.”California added 8,500 nonfarm payroll jobs last month, showing <strong>the</strong> state’s economy wascontinuing its gradual improvement. Half a dozen sec<strong>to</strong>rs grew, including education, finance andtransportation. The biggest gains were seen in <strong>the</strong> leisure and hospitality sec<strong>to</strong>r, which added10,700 jobs. Five sec<strong>to</strong>rs reported job losses, including construction and manufacturing and miningand logging.3. Alice Moser - Catalyst Behind <strong>the</strong> <strong>Hartnell</strong> Mural on Merrill HallOn Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 29, Ms. Moser s<strong>to</strong>pped bymy <strong>of</strong>fice for a visit. It was a wonderfulvisit and I appreciated that sheprovided me with <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ry behind <strong>the</strong>mural. She also discussed with me <strong>the</strong>his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> William <strong>Hartnell</strong>, his wifeMaria Teresa de la Guerra <strong>Hartnell</strong>,<strong>the</strong>ir families, and <strong>the</strong>ir influence in <strong>the</strong>growth and development <strong>of</strong> California.Ms. Moser will turn 100 years old in2013 and we certainly look forward <strong>to</strong>her next visit <strong>to</strong> <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong>.2 | P a g e


4. Presentation <strong>to</strong> King City Rotary ClubOn Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 31 I was <strong>the</strong> speaker at <strong>the</strong>King City Rotary Club meeting. Iappreciated <strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> provide<strong>the</strong> club members with an updateregarding <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong>. It wasHalloween day so many club membersgot in <strong>the</strong> spirit and attended incostumes. Dean Paulette Bumbaloughis a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> club and CandiDePauw, HCCD <strong>Board</strong> Member, alsoattended <strong>the</strong> meeting.L <strong>to</strong> R: President Lewallen; Mikel Ann Miller, KC Rotary Club President; Candi DePauw, HCCD <strong>Board</strong>Member; Paulette Bumbalough, Dean <strong>of</strong> South County Education Services.5. Salinas Chief <strong>of</strong> Police Visits <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong>Kelly McMillin, Salinas Chief <strong>of</strong> Police,visited <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong> on November 1.An audience <strong>of</strong> about 100 students andstaff heard Chief McMillin describe hisjourney <strong>to</strong> his present position and <strong>the</strong>role that <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong> played in hispersonal and pr<strong>of</strong>essionaldevelopment. He presented his visionfor <strong>the</strong> Salinas Police Department andprovided an update regarding policeoperations, initiatives, and activities.The event concluded with questionsfrom <strong>the</strong> audience about issues <strong>of</strong>mutual concern.6. Associated Students <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong> Host "Spooktacular" Event for CommunityOn Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 31st, our ASHC Student GovernmentOfficers and several Student Clubs (Physics,<strong>Hartnell</strong> Pride, and Alas clubs) hosted <strong>the</strong>irAnnual Spooktacular event in <strong>the</strong> <strong>College</strong> Centerfor community children between 6pm and 9pm.We estimated that <strong>the</strong>y hosted about 250community people that ranged in age from<strong>to</strong>ddlers <strong>to</strong> adults. They had games, candy, ahaunted maze, and free pizza and s<strong>of</strong>t drinks.The haunted maze was <strong>the</strong> highlight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eventas it delivered on being a truly scary place.3 | P a g e
