THE ANDERSON SCHOOLIn January 2003, the Bethlehem Central School District’s Committee for SpecialEducation (CSE), in conjunction with Jonathan’s parents, determined that the AndersonSchool was an appropriate placement for Jonathan. According to its Web site, theAnderson School (part of the Anderson Center for Autism) was founded in 1924 inStaatsburg, New York. It is a private, not-for-profit organization, managed by anexecutive director under the guidance of a board of trustees. The school provideseducational, residential, health, clinical, and other programs for children and adults withdevelopmental disabilities. Within the field, Anderson School is what is commonlyreferred to as a “voluntary agency,” a private agency that is certified by the state toprovide services. The Anderson School’s Web site notes:Anderson Center for Autism, a not for profit organization, offers thehighest quality year round day and residential programs to children andadults who have been diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Our progressivecurriculum features educational, cultural and recreational opportunitiesspecifically designed to challenge each individual to the limits of his orher own abilities.At Anderson Center for Autism, we’re committed to offering children andadults with autism a progressive, nurturing environment whereopportunities for Lifelong Learning are not only possible, but somethingwe experience everyday.The Anderson School children’s programs include several types of residentialcare facilities, an educational program and after-school programs.
