History of DuvallCity of DuvallDuvall was homesteaded in the 1870s by Francis and James Duvall. The original town site, called Cherry Valley, was located a half milealong the banks of the Snoqualmie River. The waterway connectedDuvall to Snohomish and Everett, making it an ideal location forlogging.Photo by Stephanie CombsUntil 1890, the river was Duvall’s main lifeline. Trees for buildingwere transported up and down river by steam paddle-wheel boats.Logging companies provided jobs which attracted cattle and dairyfarms and railroad companies to the valley.Prosperity brought expansion. A train depot and streets andsidewalks were built. New businesses opened their doors, includinga movie house, drug store, newspaper, and four hotels. CherryValley’s first school, built in 1879, was constructed from the woodof a single log. Some of the buildings built in this time, includingthe Grange Hall, still stand today. On January 6, 1913, the town of Duvall incorporated. In 1955, RayBurhen bought the train depot, which he later donated to the Cityof Duvall. It was then moved to its final site at Depot Park. Doing Business in DuvallDoing Business in DuvallBusiness on the Runby Jeff WolfAs owner of Duvall Fitness, I’ve often been asked questions abouthow to run a business or manage personal finances. In my mind, these two activities are much like keeping your body fit. Both haveto be a daily lifestyle choice. Making daily choices to eat healthy, avoid alcohol, tobacco and drugs and, of course, work out canmake a big difference. Here are a few ideas to bring this idea tolight:1) In order to keep your body AND your business in shape, youneed to make a plan and stick with it so that it becomes a lifestyle.• Annually, make a challenging yet REALISTIC quarterly goal. Ifthe goals for you or your business are not challenging, what’s thepoint? If they are not realistic and you cannot possibly achievethem, then again, what’s the point? Push yourself, your businessand your employees to achieve their fullest potential.• Monitor your goals quarterly and make the adjustmentsnecessary. If your goals were too low, ask yourself if this is aseasonal adjustment or if there was something else out of theordinary you were not expecting. Either way, adjust your goal ifnecessary to account for irregular activities in your business.• Perform annual and quarterly reviews and perform monthlycheck-ups to see if progress is being made2) Exercise Regularly• This means more than doing gardening or walking casually. Youneed to elevate your heart rate to a healthy level which challengesyour body to burn calories and fat by doing both cardiovasculartraining and resistance training.• Your business is no different! Take time to touch base with eachstaff member daily and talk about business events and goals of theday. Make sure your staff is actively working throughout their shiftand, by all means, provide coaching when necessary.3) Get Professional Help• Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, performs better when theyhave a coach or someone to be accountable to who is a highperformer - and I mean a HIGH performer. In the fitness industry,we call this a Personal Trainer and they first test the individual tosee what their fitness level is and then build a program specificallyfor that person.• In your business, a professional coach or mentor should do thesame by spending time in your business, evaluating you as anindividual business leader and helping you strengthen your abilitiesto keep your business successful. Never choose your best friendto be a coach. They are less likely to be critical and help you pushthrough the changes you need to make to be a proficient businessleader.Doggy Styleby Jeff ZuberStarting and operating a small business regardless of location is arisky proposition. Depending on where you get your statistics, 50%to 70% will fail in the first 18 months. Small businesses were alsohit hard during the recession. More than 200,000 small businessesclosed between 2008 and 2010 according to U.S. Census figures. With those numbers in mind, Jeff and Debby Zuber considerthemselves very fortunate to be marking their 4th anniversaryoperating Best Buddy Dog Wash in Duvall on March 1, 2014.“When we purchased Best Buddy from the previous ownerin 2010, the business was barely covering operating costs anddeclining rapidly,” says Jeff, “But we love dogs and we love Duvall. So we just took a leap of faith we could make it work.”Debby adds, “Duvall is the best place we could have chosen to runour business. The support we’ve received from the community hasbeen nothing short of amazing - and we are thriving as a result.”When asked to reflect on factors which have been most importantto the success of Best Buddy Dog Wash, Jeff and Debby agree, “It’sbeen a combination of things. It’s important to pay attention towhat your clientele is telling you they need.”“Best Buddy started out as strictly a do-it-yourself dog bathingfacility,” notes Jeff, “but we listened and learned our clients wantedmuch more. So Best Buddy has expanded to include full servicebathing, grooming, pet supplies and high nutrition dog food to ourmix of services and merchandise. Our experience has shown us ifyou want to succeed you have to be willing and able to adapt.”“Equally important is how you execute”, explains Debby. “At least90% of our clients live less than 10 miles from our store. Being partof a close-knit community provides a special opportunity to buildtrust and relationships. We’re helping the same people regularlyand they become more like an extended family versus businessclients. We’ve come to understand that our clients consider theirdogs to be members of their family too. So we work hard to ensureour service and merchandise supports them in that way. We’renot perfect - but our heart is always in it and we hope that shinesthrough.”Most of all, a small business requires a lot of hard work andattention to details. Best Buddy Dog Wash is looking forward toenjoying continued growth as it enters its 4th year of business.Owners Jeff and Debby Zuber, groomer Kelly Miller and the entirestaff hope to be serving their extended family in Duvall, Carnationand the Snoqualmie Valley for many years to come. All of us need to be fit in our personal lives and in how we run ourbusinesses. To be a top performer, condition yourself to always belearning, growing and keep your business…on the run!36 2014 Duvall Visitor Guide and Business DirectoryDuvall Chamber of Commerce 37
