www.chemmarket.infoPaints and coatingsThe analysis of the data shows a steadytrend towards the growth of the totalproduction with a simultaneous reduction ina share of solvent-based paints. During theperiod from 2003 to 2008, the total output ofpaints and coatings increased by 2.4 times(from 38,300 to 90,500 tonnes). However, from 2003 to 2007, the production of solventbasedpaints increased only by 25% (from134,000 to 168,000 tonnes). In 2011 theproduction of waterborne coatings grew, though insignificantly, by 300 tonnes, to80,200 tonnes, whereas the output of solventbasedpaints slumped by 37% (from 168,000to 106,000 tonnes). It should be noted that the share of waterbornepaints in the country's total productionof paints and coatings increased from 23%in 2004 to 43% in 2011. This testifies to adownward trend in the Ukrainian productionof toxic paintwork materials on the basis oforganic solvents and an increase in the outputof eco-friendly water-borne paints. Also, ordinary consumers are becoming more andmore aware of up-to-date environmentallyfriendly coatings. Unfortunately, there is nosuch a tendency in the domestic industrialcoatings market. The development of the Ukrainian paints& coatings market is strongly influenced byimport deliveries as well. The analysis of thedata provided by the State Customs Serviceof Ukraine (see Table 2) allows one toconclude that the total volume of paints &coatings imports into Ukraine increased by13% from 53,100 to 60,100 tonnes, in 2011compared to 2007.In 2009 and 2010, the country's importsof paints and coatings decreased due to areduction in supplies of waterborne coatingsfrom abroad. However, in 2011 the importssaw an impressive YOY growth of 41.7% (or17,700 tonnes), to 60,100 tonnes at theTable 2. Dynamics and structure of the paints & coatings importsinto Ukraine in 2007-2012, by types, tonnesType of paints andcoatingsexpense paintwork materials based on organicsolvents. Such a jump occurred owing toindustrial coatings used in mechanicalengineering, car production and infrastructurefacilities. The same tendency remained forJanuary-October of 2012.Since 2009, the share of waterborne paintsin the Ukrainian imports has been decliningand that of coatings on the basis of organicsolvents, on the contrary, has beenexpanding. This is due to new productionplants for paints and coatings as well as toincreased output at the existingmanufacturing facilities. All these factorscontribute to the satisfying of the internaldemand at the expense of the domesticproducts. It is to be stressed that over thepast three years there have been put intooperation up-to-date water-borne coatingsplants with a total capacity of more than50,000 tonnes. Those manufacturing unitshave been launched by well-known2007 2008 2009 2010 201110monthsof 2012Waterborne 26700 26000 15900 15300 16900 15100Solvent-based 26400 31000 25300 27100 43200 35700Type of paintsand coatingsTable 3. Theproducts on the basis of organic solventsaccounted for the major part of the exportdeliveries. Their share varied from 79% in2008 to 86% in 2007.Ukraine exports paints and coatings mainlyto the CIS countries since environmentalrequirements on their markets are not asstringent as in the EU states. This allows theUkrainian companies to compete with thelocal producers. The total consumption of paintworkmaterials in Ukraine peaked at 290,000tonnes in 2007, which has been the highestindex for the past 15 years. Later it bottomedout at 220,000 tonnes in 2009, whichrepresents a 24% YOY fall or 70,000 tonnes¹ 2(74) February 2013 Eurasian chemical market79

Paints and coatingswww.chemmarket.infoin physical terms. The segment of paints andcoatings on the basis of organic solventssuffered a 28% decline or 52,400 tonnes from184,700 tonnes in 2007 to 132,300 tonnes in2009. The decrease in the consumption ofwaterborne paintwork materials was not sosignificant and made up 16% or 17,000tonnes from 105,000 tonnes in 2007 to88,000 tonnes in 2009 (see Table 4).Later, paints and coatings consumptioninsignificantly increased to 227,000 tonnesin 2010 and to 233,000 tonnes in 2011,proportionally in both segments of the market(without taking into account paints &coatings produced at private enterprises(almost 30%). This tendency remained in thefirst half of 2012.Over the period under review there werestructural changes in the consumption ofthese products in Ukraine, due to theincreased share of waterborne paints in thetotal consumption from 36% in 2007 to 41%in 2011, and the decreased share of paintworkmaterials on the basis of organic solventsfrom 64% to 59%, respectively. The Ukrainian paints & coatings marketwas primarily saturated by the domesticproducts. However, the share of home-madesolvent-based paintwork materials in the totalconsumption decreased gradually from 86%in 2007 to 69% in 2011. On the contrary, theshare of the domestic products in the segmentof waterborne paints increased from 75% to82% for the same period. There are positive tendencies in theUkrainian production of paintwork materials, first of all, the increase in the output of waterbornepaints. However, the data given inthe present article show that the domesticmarket is still largely saturated by generalpurposepaintwork materials on the basis oforganic solvents, which do not meet the EUenvironmental standards. These products stillaccount for almost 60% of the total domesticproduction. And this is the primary factor thatwill have a negative impact on the furtherdevelopment of the paints & coatings industryin Ukraine. The production of so-called "outof date" products will not allow domesticmanufacturers to compete in both domesticand foreign markets. First of all, it refers tothe products containing volatile organiccompounds and heavy metals (lead, cobalt,etc.). It is to be stressed that paints & coatingsconsumers more and more tightenenvironmental requirements. Furthermore, government bodies should be more active indealing with issues of safety of the chemicalsused in the manufacture and the imports ofpaints and coatings.Speaking about the prospects of thedevelopment of the Ukrainian paints &coatings market it should be mentioned thatthe main trend will be a further increase inthe share of eco-friendly water-borne paintsand a reduction in the consumption andproduction of solvent-based paints.Incidentally, Sweden-based Eskaro GroupAB announced in January, 2013 its intentionto build a new paint production facility inOdesa, Ukraine. When in operation the plantwill have a capacity of 15,000 tonnes/year ofwaterborne decorative paint. The first plantof Eskaro Group in Ukraine was establishedin 1996.ABB, the leading power and automationtechnology group, is responsible for thedetailed engineering, the supply of coreprocess equipment and also the erectionsupervision and start-up assistance. The scope of supply included two 5 m3conical dispersers of ABB Delicel range, which are able to process batches of variablesizes down to 20% of their nominal capacity.Delicel dispersers have a dual-shaft mixingunit, combining high shearing and highpumping effects for an efficient mixing interms of product quality and energyconsumption. ABB supplied also one up-anddowndisperser for small batches, storage andlet-down tanks. Powder handling isergonomic and transfer operations areautomatic. The transfer of liquids-resins,finished products, premixes, glues and putties– is operated in closed circuit using piggedlines for the transfer to storage and let-downstanks as well as to filling lines. Resins aredosed using an ABB piggable collector, combining pigged lines and massflow meterfor an accurate dosing. Pigged lines enablethe total recovery of products and cleaningwater. Formulas, recipes, manufacturing andfilling operations are controlled by Paintcelcontrol system. It optimises the operationsand enhances the factory flexibility as wellas the equipment availability, by executingoperations in hidden times such as the piggingof transfer lines or cleaning operations.Paintcel ensures the traceability of actions– even half-automated ones – and a finetuningof process parameters to easily controlthe consumption of raw materials and water. In addition to efficiency and increasedproductivity, ABB solutions and controlsystems provide Eskaro with productionfacilities compliant with health, safety andenvironmental standards by reducingemissions, product losses and recycling water.Furthermore, waste water will be treated byevaporation and condensation of vapours.Treated water will be reused in the processas cleaning water. With this new factory, Eskaro aims atincreasing their share of the Ukrainian paintmarket up to 20% in five years. The growthpotential has been also taken into accountduring the detail design phase and extensionpossibilities are planned so as to reach acapacity of 30,000 tonnes/year.80 Eurasian chemical market ¹ 2(74) February 2013
