Dear NLA Members,
Among the many benefi ts the National Limousine Association
affords its members are the educational programs
presented for operators at the annual LCT Eastern Conference
and the yearly International LCT Show.
If you’re not already aware, you should know that the
NLA Show Committee meets virtually every single week of
the year to plan the curriculums and line up guest speakers
and industry experts for the faculties.
My personal thanks goes to this year’s Show Committee
co-chairs, George Jacobs (Windy City Limousine, Franklin
Park, Ill.) and Scott Solombrino (Dav El Chauffeured Transportation
Network, Chelsea, Mass.) and committee members
Dean De Beer (Tristar Worldwide Chauffeur Service,
for working together to plan the upcoming events.
In addition, my very special thanks goes to the person
The National Limousine Association
is pleased to announce its support
of “First Observer,” the highway
security of the U.S. infrastructure
by training people – most especially
transportation professionals – to
observe, assess and report risks and
become First Observers. Training is
free and is offered online and, in
some areas, in a classroom setting.
“First Observer” is operated by
Team HMS of Alexandria, Va. under
an agreement with the Department
of Homeland Security (DHS).
The program’s mission is to administer
an anti-terrorism and security
awareness program for highway
professionals in support of the Na-
programs manager Darcie Benard!
The 2009 LCT Eastern Conference, which will be held on
September October 7 and 8 at the Mohegan Sun Resort
& Casino in Connecticut, is sure to provide the best learning
experience in the event’s fi ve year history. So appropriately
themed for this year, East’s “Get Tough!” agenda
offers a knock-out schedule that features seminars galore
and multiple business networking events.
We anticipate one of the top hits of the show will be the
brand-new FREE Affi liate Speed Meet that will be held on
Wednesday October 7. Modeled after the modern speeddating
phenomenon, the Affi liate Speed Meet will be a
quick-fi re introduction between networks who are looking
for affi liate partners and operators who are looking
for referral business.
Operators who participate will have the opportunity to
meet the principals of 20 different networks – all in one
hour’s time. There will be three sessions held so 120 operators
will be able to take part in all. Registration will be
onsite and managed on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis – so
be sure to get there early to secure your reservation.
Another must-attend will be the keynote presentation,
set for Thursday October 8, which will be delivered by service
industry veteran Jon Luther, executive chairman of the
board at Dunkin’ Brands. Since joining the company six
years ago, Luther has led the transformation, revitalization
and global expansion of the company’s two iconic brands
– Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins. Proof of his success:
Since 2003, system-wide sales have increased a whopping
66 percent.
to recruit volunteers from the livery
to act as First Observers in
reporting suspicious activities of either
Since its inception, “First Observer”
AT ITS JULY 8 AND AUGUST 12 MEETINGS the
Board of Directors of the National Limousine
Association selected three charities
for 2009 Harold Berkman Memorial Fund
donations.
The charities and donation amounts
are: Air Charity Network (formerly Angel
Research - $15,000; and Fisher House -
$10,000.
The Harold Berkman Memorial Fund,
the NLA’s philanthropic arm, has supported
Air Charity Network and the Alliance
About Air
Air Charity
Network (ACN)
provides access
for people in need
seeking free air
transportation to
specialized health
care facilities or
distant destinations
due to family, community
or national
crisis. Every 24
minutes a child or
adult in need is being
the volunteer and
donor resources of
this charitable aviation
About Alliance for
Lupus Research
The mission of the Alliance
for Lupus Research (ALR) is
to fi nd better treatments and
ultimately prevent and cure
systemic lupus erythematosus
(SLE), or lupus, a debilitating
autoimmune disease. The organization
believes the solution
to lupus is a signifi cant increase
in biomedical research focused
on new treatments, prevention,
and a cure and, therefore,
supports the most promising
research projects from scientists
at the most prestigious universities,
medical schools, and
hospitals throughout the world.
Since its founding, ALR has
given more money to lupus
research than any non-governmental
agency in the world;
to date $55 million has been
committed.
Because ALR’s Board of
Directors pays for all administrative
and fundraising costs,
one hundred percent of all
donations from the public, and
the proceeds of ALR’s grassroots
fundraising program, Walk
Harold Berkman
This year’s gift to Fisher House, intended
to recognize the untold sacrifi ces of U.S.
Armed Forces service members and their
families, is a fi rst for the NLA.
Monies for the Berkman charitable
contributions primarily are
raised by the National Limousine
Association through its auctions
and raffl e held each year at the
International LCT Show. Private
donations boost the fund’s total.
No NLA membership dues are
given to the Harold Berkman Memorial
Fund.
About Fisher House
The Fisher House program is a private-public
partnership that supports America’s military
in their time of adversity. The program
recognizes the special sacrifi ces of U.S. men
and women in uniform and the hardships
of military service by meeting a humanitarian
need beyond that normally provided by
the Departments of Defense and Veterans
Affairs. Because members of the military
and their families are stationed worldwide
and must often travel great distances for
specialized medical care, Fisher House
Foundation donates “comfort homes,” built
on the grounds of major military and VA
medical centers. These homes enable family
members to be close to a loved one at the
most stressful time, for example, during the
hospitalization for an unexpected illness,
disease, or injury.
There is at least one Fisher House at every
major military medical center to assist
families in need and to ensure that they
are provided with the comforts of home
in a supportive environment. Annually,
the Fisher House program serves about
10,000 families, and has made available
nearly 3 million days of lodging to family
members since the program originated in
1990. By law, there is no charge for any
family to stay at a Fisher House operated
by the Department of Veterans Affairs and
the Fisher House Foundation uses donations
to reimburse the individual Fisher
Houses operated by the Army, Navy, and
Air Force. For more information, see www.
fi sherhouse.org.
About the
Harold
Berkman
Memorial
Fund
In 1996 the National
Limousine Association
created the “NLA
Charity Fund.” Along
with many others in
the industry, Harold
Berkman, owner of
the California-based
limousine company
Music Express and a
NLA past president
and director, contributed
to the initial
start-up. When Berkman
died in 1997, the
NLA Board of Directors
unanimously
voted to re-name the
fund the “Harold
Berkman Memorial
Fund.” To date,
almost $500,000 has
been donated by the
fund to charities,
including Air Charity
Network, the Alliance
for Lupus Research,
Rebuilding Together
now, Fisher House.
10 THE LIMOSCENE
By Joseph Cirruzzo, Sr.
As co-chair of the NLA Nominating
Committee, it is my job (along with
co-chair Rich Azzolino of Gateway
Limousines Worldwide in Burlingame,
Calif.) to solicit nominations
for the NLA Board of Directors. If
you have not yet put your name into
the hat, please take a moment to
read on and see why you should.
I have served on the NLA board of
directors for a number of years with
breaks in between my terms. Those
who know me know that I don’t always
agree with everything the NLA
does. Sometimes I am vehemently
against ideas. There are other
times, though, that I see the wisdom
in doing what we do.
In either case, what’s important
to know is that I have had the opportunity
to make my opinion and
my voice heard. As a member of the
board, I have a say in the decisions
that the NLA makes and, accordingly,
I have a direct impact on our
industry.
I believe there are many people in
chauffeured transportation who are
wiser than I am. I currently sit on
the NLA board with a diverse group
of intelligent individuals who represent
both large and small companies
throughout the world. We each
have different reasons for being on
the board. We all have different
opinions. We each get one vote.
I often am in the company of
limousine operators from across the
country, across the globe. I hear
criticism of the NLA and I wonder
why the NLA’s fi ercest critics never
run for the board. I guess it is easier
to speak through criticism then to
act through participation.
I personally come from the old
school. I am not as up-to-date on
computer skills as some of my peers
but that does not mean that I don’t
see the advantages of the tool. We
have many young members of our
industry who utilize technology
in ways that I could only dream
of years ago. You are among the
people who are important for
chauffeured transportation to have
on the NLA board. You will take the
NLA into the future ensuring that
we are always at the cutting edge of
technology.
There are many who have served
on the board in the past but we no
longer see or hear from you. Where
have you been hiding? You are an
important part of our industry too.
Come back and continue to be an
agent of change for the National
Limousine Association.
The NLA needs nominees for the
board who will bring fresh ideas
and perspectives and who are
willing to fi ght our battles. Take a
moment, read the nomination form
(see page 11 of this newsletter and
www.limo.org), fi ll it in and get
involved. We need you!
