Thunderbird is off to an excellent start for 1972-73. There are 685 studentsenrolled which is the second largest enrollment in our history. This includes345 new students from 300 colleges and universities and from 40 countriesaround the world. The foreign student population totals 98.A new five-year development plan has been adopted which is based on amaximum enrollment of 750 students. The Board of Directors has decidedto avoid further investment in new buildings but rather to rebrbish whatwe have. Probably all of you remember the primitive conditions whichexisted ill! the dormitories and dining hall, and these facilities remain almostthe same.In keeping with the five-year plan, refurnishing of all dormitories is takingplace and refrigeration of all units will be started soon. A new phonesystem has provided every room with a private phone. Naturally, thesechanges cost money, but a lot less than would be needed if new dormitorieswere to be built. The School will need about $2,500,000 over the five-year period for thescheduled refurbishment, faculty salary increases, and the replacement ofaging utilities. Since contributions will be of benefit to the future ofThunderbird, as well as being tax deductible, we hope all of you will help.William VorisPresidentTHE THUNDERBIRD (alumni publicationof the Thunderbird GraduateSchool of International Management)is published in the Fall, Spring andSummer of each year.EDITOR: Martha L. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TO BE FIRST TARGETON $100,000 TELEFUND DRIVEIn 1973, we hope to substantially increase alumni giving by conducting a Telefunddrive in all major U.S. cities, and in other areas of the world where there is a largeconcentration of alumni. The Thunderbird Alumni Telefund will be a combinedeffort between the Lambda Chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon and Thunderbird. Our goalis $100,000.With our alumni scattered as they are, located literally in all parts of the globe, direct mail solicitations have been our main fund-raising effort. Many U.s. collegesand universities have found the Telefund method to be far more effective, bringingin a return from 45 to 60% as compared with a 3 to 5% response from direct mailcampaigns.True, we have less than 8,000 alumni to draw from, which is only a "drop in thebucket" when compared with the alumni body of many colleges and universities;however, raising $100,000 from 8,000 Thunderbirds should be an easy job if everyonewill cooperate. At the October 14 meeting of the Southern California Alumni Chapter, we announcedour plans for the Telefund drive in that area, and received enthusiastic response fromthe alumni and a promise to do more than their share to start the drive on its way.As Chairman of the Southern California Telefund Drive, JIM BONNER '59 will havethe wholehearted support of the Chapter Board of Directors, the area alumni andThunderbird. By the last of November each Alumnus in the area will receive a letterfrom Jim, explaining the Telefund plan. This letter will be followed by a telephonecall or personal visit from Jim, or from one of his co-chairmen. Contributions maybe made on a cash basis, or on a monthly, semi-monthly, semi-annual or annualschedule.Between the time you receive the initial letter announcing the Telefund Drive andthe time you receive the personal call from the area chairman, we urge you toexamine your budget and make your plans for a substantial cash contribution, or apledge on the installment plan. REMEMBER, YOUR GIFT IS TAX-DEDUCTIBLE.One-half of the proceeds from the Southern California drive will be credited to theSouthern California Chapter Thunderbird Scholarship Fund, and the balance will gotoward the completion of the Dining Hall Project. To ease the workload of the area chairmen, we have consented to do most of thepaper work involved. All contributions will be acknowledged by the Alumni Office, and those on scheduled payments will be billed from this office. As Dr. Voris mentioned in the "President's Message" our Board of Directors plan toraise $2,500,000 over a five-year period to meet the increasing demands of Thunderbird.Let us show our appreciation to the Board who have devoted many years to thedevelopment of the School by giving as generously as we can.REMEMBE.R, YOUR RESPONSE TO THE TELEFUND GALL WILL BE, INDICATION OF YOUR DEDICATION TO AND PRIDE IN YOUR OLD ALMA MA,TERTHUNDERBIRD.DOUBLE HONORS FORTED JOHNSON '54W.
