The PTO is now a non-profit associate of Viridian Energy.
If you could save between $100 and $200 on your utility bill during the
summer, while raising money for the PTO and being more “green”,
would you be interested?
Utility regulations in New Jersey allow consumers to choose the supplier of the electric energy that
comes into their homes from their power company. If the NJ consumer does not direct an option
on the “CHOICE Program,” PSE&G must purchase the supply from NJ’s default supplier, the Basic
Generation Service auction (BGS), and the customer pays that rate. Viridian sources alternative
energy allowing consumers to choose energy that is either 20% (the basic product) or 100% green,
meaning the energy comes from renewable/non-fossil fuel sources. By choosing Viridian, the
customer can direct PSE&G to buy “greener” energy which also happens to be at a discount to the
BGS supply rate. PSE&G remains your power company - they are in control of how the energy
gets to your home (Delivery). They still provide the same reliability of service, you still pay your
utility bill to them and you still call them for emergencies, but some or all of your energy (depending
on what product you choose), comes from a source of your choosing, not PSE&G’s commodity.
Here’s the fundraising part: As a tax exempt organization, the PTO entered into an arrangement
with Viridian Energy as a non-profit associate. They set up a website for us at no charge, and our
job is to direct traffic to it. Any utility customer that registers to get energy through Viridian will earn
us an average of $2 per meter per month, a residual that keeps paying as long as the customer
remains a Viridian customer. Also, we get a bonus of $250 for the first 25 customers and $2,500
for 500 customers. Also, there is a schedule of pay rates that we earn monthly, depending on the
amount of energy usage of customers that convert – as low as 75¢ and as high as $1,000 per
meter per month.
The utility customer enters into a month to month agreement with Viridian that can be cancelled at
any time without penalty or termination fee. There are no credit checks or deposits required for
residential customers. As an incentive to switch, Viridian provides a special introductory rate, but
the standard monthly rate has been below the BGS rate every month since Viridian entered the
market. Your PSE&G bill provides a comparison each month of what you would have paid had you
purchased the BGS supply, allowing easy comparison to your Viridian charges. If you don’t see a
savings or decide you want to let PSE&G choose your energy sources, just cancel, and you’ll be
switched back after the next meter reading (once you get through the mandatory NJ 14 day
rescission period).
