<strong>Golf</strong> for a Cause100 holes of <strong>Golf</strong> with a PurposeLongview 100 Benefits United Family ServicesBy Sam Smiththe 3rd annual Longview 100 brought outnearly 2-dozen members to help the UnitedFamily Services.Every golfer can dream ofplay<strong>in</strong>g 100 holes of golfmaybe <strong>in</strong> a week or even amonth, but <strong>in</strong> one day. “Wow!” Ormaybe. “Ouch!”Twenty-two members of the<strong>Club</strong> at Longview did accomplishthat feat last month, f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g 2200holes of golf <strong>in</strong> a little over 14-hoursunder a boil<strong>in</strong>g Carol<strong>in</strong>a sun.“Why?” To raise funds to benefitthe Capital Campaign of UnitedFamily Services to build a new DomesticViolence Shelter for Womenand Children <strong>in</strong> <strong>Charlotte</strong>.They began before dawn – tee<strong>in</strong>goff at 5:50 AM – and the last golfersrolled off the course after 8 PM.With the idea of giv<strong>in</strong>g back to thecommunity and provid<strong>in</strong>g hope andsolutions to victims of domestic violence,many of the players were actually“tweet<strong>in</strong>g” friends andbus<strong>in</strong>ess colleagues seek<strong>in</strong>g additionaldonations.“It is not an overstatement to saythat beyond golf, these players actuallysaved lives through their participation<strong>in</strong> the Longview 100,” saidPhil Kl<strong>in</strong>e, President & CEO ofUnited Family Services <strong>in</strong> <strong>Charlotte</strong>.“The funds that they raised contributedramatically to our CapitalCampaign that will give realhope to the survivors of domesticviolence,”To that end, United FamilyServices, a 101-year oldcounsel<strong>in</strong>g and crisis <strong>in</strong>terventionagency, has launcheda campaign to build a new 80-bedFormer Long Drive Champion DavidMobley (wild pants) jo<strong>in</strong>ed Longviewmembers Brian headrick and JonathanNugent <strong>in</strong> the golf marathon.shelter. The goal is $10 million –about half of that amount has beenraised.Will Caulder turned <strong>in</strong>the “Dream Round”, shoot<strong>in</strong>ga 77/59 (-13) on thesecond trip around the JackNicklaus designed 7,065-yard par 72 layout <strong>in</strong> south<strong>Charlotte</strong>. Tim Moynihanposted the low gross totalfor the first 90-hole – 366(+6) with 16-birdies for theday, and David Harry wasthe low net player of the event,go<strong>in</strong>g -13 through 90-holes at 342.The last 10 holes were called survivorholes, and didn’t figure <strong>in</strong>tothe official stand<strong>in</strong>gs for the day.“We played fast and furious forthe first 36 holes, try<strong>in</strong>g to completeit <strong>in</strong>side 4 and half hours,” said organizerNick Page. “Then, we generallyshifted <strong>in</strong>to a survival rhythmfor the middle 36. At that po<strong>in</strong>t, wejust hung on straight to the f<strong>in</strong>ishl<strong>in</strong>e. It’s all about great friendships,a love of golf, a great cause – andsurvival.”Each golfer participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 3rdannual Longview 100 pledged toraise a m<strong>in</strong>imum of $1000 for theCapital Campaign.
