World am Championship PreviewLike the swallows returning to Capistrano, golfersfrom around the globe will flock to MyrtleBeach, S.C., Aug. 29 – Sept. 2, 2011 for the 28thannual GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship– the largest single-site amateur golf tournamentin the world. The World Am welcomed more than 3,000players from 48 states and 19 foreign counties last year.In 2000, the tournament peaked with a little more than5,000 golfers participating.The Carolinas are definitelywell-represented in the GOLF.comWorld Amateur Handicap Championship.Last year, players fromNorth and South Carolina representedone-sixth of the entire tournamentfield.Shelby attorney BobYelton and brother Donhave played all 27 WorldAm ChampionshipsTwo of those golfers, Boband Don Yelton of Shelby, N.C.,have participated in all 27previous World Am events– and the brothers aresigned up and ready to compete in the 28th edition.The brothers have been part of a group of betweeneight and 16 guys that have made a springgolf trip to the Grand Strand every year for about35 years.Don Yelton, 65, an owner of a computer softwaredevelopment company, and his brother, Bob,68, an attorney also of Shelby, N.C., are two of 14participants who have played in every World Am.Last year, Don was diagnosed with prostatecancer three months prior to the World Am. He hadsurgery and was given a clean bill of health in August,so he could keep him and his streak of consecutiveappearances in the tournament, alive."It's kind of the situation where we might nothave played if you weren't in this streak," Bob Yeltonsaid. "I reckon it's an ego thing: I've playedevery one of them, and I'm going to keep playingevery one of them as long as I can. We're part of 14guys now that have played every one of them, andlet's keep it going as long as we can."As they are this year, the Yeltons often play inflights with handicaps better than theirs so theycan compete with and against each other and/orfriends from Shelby, N.C. Golf for a Cause100 holes of Golf with a PurposeLongview 100 Benefits United Family ServicesBy Sam Smiththe 3rd annual Longview 100 brought outnearly 2-dozen members to help the UnitedFamily Services.Every golfer can dream ofplaying 100 holes of golfmaybe in a week or even amonth, but in one day. “Wow!” Ormaybe. “Ouch!”Twenty-two members of theClub at Longview did accomplishthat feat last month, finishing 2200holes of golf in a little over 14-hoursunder a boiling Carolina sun.“Why?” To raise funds to benefitthe Capital Campaign of UnitedFamily Services to build a new DomesticViolence Shelter for Womenand Children in Charlotte.They began before dawn – teeingoff at 5:50 AM – and the last golfersrolled off the course after 8 PM.With the idea of giving back to thecommunity and providing hope andsolutions to victims of domestic violence,many of the players were actually“tweeting” friends andbusiness colleagues seeking additionaldonations.“It is not an overstatement to saythat beyond golf, these players actuallysaved lives through their participationin the Longview 100,” saidPhil Kline, President & CEO ofUnited Family Services in Charlotte.“The funds that they raised contributedramatically to our CapitalCampaign that will give realhope to the survivors of domesticviolence,”To that end, United FamilyServices, a 101-year oldcounseling and crisis interventionagency, has launcheda campaign to build a new 80-bedFormer Long Drive Champion DavidMobley (wild pants) joined Longviewmembers Brian headrick and JonathanNugent in the golf marathon.shelter. Tim Moynihanposted the low gross totalfor the first 90-hole – 366(+6) with 16-birdies for theday, and David Harry wasthe low net player of the event,going -13 through 90-holes at 342.The last 10 holes were called survivorholes, and didn’t figure intothe official standings for the day.“We played fast and furious forthe first 36 holes, trying to completeit inside 4 and half hours,” said organizerNick Page. “Then, we generallyshifted into a survival rhythmfor the middle 36. At that point, wejust hung on straight to the finishline. It’s all about great friendships,a love of golf, a great cause – andsurvival.”Each golfer participating in 3rdannual Longview 100 pledged toraise a minimum of $1000 for theCapital Campaign.
