Dunwoody College held Founders Week Sept. 14-18. The week featured a series of events and 

culminated in the inauguration of the College’s ninth president — Dr. Richard J. Wagner — the 

afternoon of the 18th. President Wagner also presented a forum on integrating community service 

into the learning process. The week included a fundraiser for Urban League Academy, a student work 

showcase, Fall Fling (featuring activities and lunch for the students), student worker and student 

resource fairs, a colloquium on Dunwoody faculty as ambassadors for change, and the retirement 

party for former President C. Ben Wright.

Jack Mowry: crafting a family business 

Jack Mowry had already attended Dunwoody once — 

for a six-month course in machining — and was working 

in a machine shop when he decided that what he 

wanted to do was become an engineer. His employer 

told him that he should go back to Dunwoody for 

mechanical drafting so he did, graduating in 1971. 

Jack received two job offers, but both offered wages 

less than he had been making as a machinist, so he 

decided to go back to the machine shop. 

“I never got paid to draw a line,” he said. “But the ability 

to really read a technical drawing and feel comfortable 

— that confidence, that ability — I got from going 

through Dunwoody.” 

And that ability and confidence served him well a few 

years later when he started up the machining business 

Metal Craft in Elk River (with a partner who he bought 

out less than two years later). 

Metal Craft continued to grow throughout the 1980s, 

but Jack was looking for a way to bolster business due 

to the cyclical nature of machine shop orders. He had 

been reading about an expected growth in parts of knee 

and hip replacements and decided to begin creating 

close-tolerance parts for surgical instruments. The move 

paid off, and today Metal Craft supplies parts to medical 

companies nationwide, including Medtronic.

In 1996, Metal Craft acquired Riverside Machining 

and Engineering, which specializes in the precision 

machining of aluminum heat sinks, cold plates and heat 

exchangers. Today, the two companies employ 160, 

including Jack’s daughter Trisha, who serves as 

president, and son Sean, who serves as vice president 

of operations. Jack is now acting as an adviser after 

many years leading the companies, but he still 

considers all of his employees family. 

And he isn’t slowing down one bit. One of his major 

pursuits is sailing, a hobby born out of a childhood 

fascination with world travel from reading National 

Geographic. Back in the early ‘90s, Trisha signed him 

up for a sailing class on Lake Superior and before long 

he had acquired the sailing boat The Bréagán (which 

means toy or plaything in Gaelic). Jack started out with 

the boat in Lake Superior and, sometimes solo, 

sometimes with friends, has since sailed it to Ireland, all 

around northern Europe, down into the Mediterranean 

and then over to the Caribbean. It’s currently docked 

in Panama. Jack plans to head down there in January 

and sail to Columbia. 

“It’s a wonderful boat — very seaworthy,” he said. 

“I have so much confidence the boat will get me there.”

Anagram International, Inc. first began to see 

Dunwoody as a place to generate employees in the 

early 1990s. Since then the relationship has continued to 

grow: the company provides 

scholarships to students and donates 

equipment, film and raw materials for 

use in the print labs. 

Anagram is the world leader in foil 

balloon manufacturing. The company 

supplies most of the foil balloons found 

in grocery stores and party supply stores 

— the ones that show up at birthday 

parties and graduations and other 

occasions. Their product offerings 

include in-house designs, but also 

include many licensed designs and 

licensed characters (cartoon characters, 

pop singers, movie characters, etc.). 

In addition to its donations to the 

College, Anagram shows its commitment to the Dunwoody 

by encouraging its executives to provide industry feedback 

From its founding in 1966, Pentair, Inc. has sought to 

give back to the community, and it has generously 

included Dunwoody College in its giving program for more 

than 20 years now. 

Pentair formalized that commitment in 1998 when it 

established The Pentair Foundation. The Foundation funds 

programs in a variety of areas, including water conservation, 

but education is also a major focus. 

“One of our primary areas of focus is education, 

including support of higher education,” said Susan 

Carter, manager of The Pentair Foundation. “And we 

support not just traditional learners, but also those in 

nontraditional programs. Dunwoody is a great example of 

that with the emphasis on hands-on learning and a history 

of getting students into the workforce. We want to support 

our grantee institutions and the opportunity to help people 

wherever they are.” 

More recently, the Foundation has provided a grant to 

Dunwoody Academy because of its emphasis on providing 

opportunities to Twin Cities youth interested in combining

Pentair’s commitment to education 

and help out with Dunwoody events. For example, Paul 

Ansolabehere, Vice President of Operations and Human 

Resources, has spoken to classes in the Design & Graphics 

Technology department as well as at several College events. 

“We support Dunwoody because they are 

grooming our future employees and, quite likely, 

future members of our management team,” said 

Paul. “The printing industry is one of the larger industries in 

Minnesota. If we want that to continue, we need to support 

the educational piece of that. Dunwoody is one of the better 

schools at producing graduates that also know how to work 

with the equipment.” 

Skilled workers are an important way that Anagram stays 

competitive globally because they can run multiple machines 

in the company’s highly automated manufacturing facility and 

so create a large, quality output with fewer employees. 

Founded in 1977, and part of the Amscan family of 

companies since 1998, Anagram is located in Minneapolis. 

Its products are marketed in more than 85 countries.

enclosure and thermal management products that house 

and protect sensitive electronics and electrical components. 

Headquartered in Minneapolis, it had 2008 revenues of 

$3.35 billion. Its Water Group is a global leader in providing 

innovative products and systems used worldwide in the 

movement, treatment, storage and enjoyment of water. 

Its pumps and other water equipment were used in the 

clean up after Hurricane Katrina and products and personnel 

from its FoamPro business were used in fighting the longestburning 

structural fire in U.S. history — the fire that resulted 

from the Sept. 11, 2001 destruction of the World Trade 

Towers.

Program Profile 

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY 

Keeping pace with the speed of change 

Dunwoody College’s focus on applied education means 

that curriculum must match the skills and knowledge 

needs of industry. No area of Dunwoody experiences 

this quite so keenly as Computer Technology, the department 

which prepares students to enter the field of Information 

Technology (IT). In IT, every software or operating system 

update, every change to networking protocols or Internet 

standards, every new piece of hardware or electronic device 

potentially impacts the services and support they provide 

companies, organizations and consumers. 

“IT professionals need to be willing to embrace technology,” 

Nate Blommel, Director of Computer, Graphic Design and 

Printing Programs, said. “And that’s especially true when it 

comes to our faculty.” 

“Dunwoody is the first place USFamily.Net 

turns to when recruiting new members 

to our staff.” 

As Nate explains, the fundamentals remain constant — web 

programming requires building a program or function from 

basic units of code no matter which computer language is 

used and no matter what device it works on — but the 

specifics are changing all the time. For example, three years 

ago, one of the new topics of the Emerging Technologies 

(CNTS 231) class was wireless networks and VOIP (Voice 

Over Internet Protocol, that is, using an Internet connection 

to make phone calls). Currently, virtualization is being 

integrated into the class. Virtualization is the process of 

using software to emulate hardware; an entire computer 

can be emulated therefore creating a virtual machine.

One way in which faculty members accomplish this is by 

keeping their certifications up to date and adding new ones. 

In the IT world, certifications are generally centered on 

certain standards, skills or products that are widely used. 

For example, the Cisco Certified Network Associate 

certification focuses on the installation, configuration and 

troubleshooting of Cisco-built routers and switches that 

companies use to connect their network(s) to the Internet. 

“All of the faculty, myself included, make sure to keep our 

certifications up-to-date and add new ones when we have the 

time and passion,” Nate said. “In fact, Brian Carlson, one of 

our Computer Networking Systems instructors and a 

Dunwoody alumnus, has taken this to an amazing level — 

at the age of 21, he already has four IT certifications.” 

New programs 

Another way to keep up with changes in technology is to 

offer new programs or expand old ones. The most dramatic 

move Dunwoody made was when it merged with NEI 

College of Technology, a leader in IT education, in 2003. 

The merger beefed up Dunwoody’s Computer Networking 

Systems program — it is now the second most popular 

field of study on campus. It also brought a whole new 

dimension of IT to the mix, which with a few changes over 

the years is now the Web Programming and Database 

Development program, which focuses on the skills needed 

to create websites and web applications, especially those 

that interact with databases. In addition, a Computer 

Networking Technician program is offered as part of 

Dunwoody’s Evening College. 

More recently, the College created a Management 

Information Systems concentration for the bachelor’s degree 

completion program in applied management. The degree

concentration is geared toward working IT professionals with 

two-year degrees who are looking to move up into management 

roles, for example as the manager of a help desk or a director 

of IT services position. The curriculum covers everything from 

managing employees to working with outside vendors to database 

technologies and system analysis. 

Whether they choose Computer Networking or Web 

Programming, graduates from Dunwoody’s Computing 

Technology programs are well-positioned to find employment. 

“There are generally two tracks that our graduates take,” Nate said. 

“Those who work for big companies end up becoming specialists. 

They work on the help desk, or focus on keeping the servers 

running, or work on the wireless infrastructure. And some of our 

students end up at smaller companies where they basically 

become the Network Administrator and do a lot of everything.” 

And often, no matter the size of the company, graduates end up 

working alongside other alumni. Case in point: At USFamily.Net, 

an Internet and telecommunications service provider, 9 out of 

21 employees within their technical support call center are 

Dunwoody graduates or students. 

“Dunwoody is the first place USFamily.Net turns to when 

recruiting new members to our staff,” said Tom O’Brien, Director 

of Operations of USFamily.Net/Velocity Telephone. “When a 

company keeps coming back to hire more, you must be doing 

something right, especially in the ever-changing world of IT.”

Computer Networking Systems 

Web Programming and 

Database Development 

Graduates from this program create websites and web 

applications for a variety of environments, including 

standard Internet browsers and sites and applications for 

mobile devices. They learn a variety of web development, 

programming and database languages and systems, 

including XHTML, Java and MySQL. 

Graduates from this program generally are involved in the 

building, connecting, maintaining and troubleshooting of 

computers within corporate computer networks. This 

means that they work with the hardware (computers and 

servers), software and operating systems, and the network 

that comprise an organization’s main IT infrastructure.

Faculty Profile: 

Nate Blommel 

Nate Blommel has always had a natural knack 

with computers, but what he really wanted to be was 

a teacher. So he earned an undergraduate degree in 

business education and finance and landed a job 

teaching business classes at Edina High School. 

His instincts were right on target. 

“I went into teaching because I enjoy helping people 

‘see the light bulb go on’ and understand something 

at a higher level,” he said. “Whether the topic is 

finance, business, or computers, learning a particular 

model or how and why something works is enjoyable, 

provides a foundation, and can take you places in life.” 

Before long, his love of computers merged with the 

teaching job when Edina High needed someone to 

step in and teach a computer networking class. Nate 

attended training and then earned his Cisco Certified 

Network (CCNA) certification. Shortly afterward, he 

began teaching at NEI College of Technology. 

Nate came over with the NEI merger and became 

Program Manager of Computer Programs in 2006. 

Earlier this year he was promoted to Director of 

Computer, Graphic Design and Printing Programs. 

But even with the new responsibilities, Nate makes 

a point of keeping up his CCNA certification and 

teaching at least one class a quarter. 

“I still teach,” he said. “I really enjoy the classroom 

experience, and as a director, my focus is to support 

the faculty. Seeing the challenges they face firsthand 

is very useful. Plus, the classroom experience is very 

rewarding.”

Dunwoody crowns 

a new champion 

After three years of winning the Alumni and Friend Golf Tournament, Parsons 

Electric’s streak was brought to an end by a winning foursome from the Baker 

Foundation (pictured above). 

Dunwoody’s golf tournament returned to the Legends Golf Club this year, which 

is a championship course with an emphasis on the native environment. Thanks 

to the tournament sponsorships and donors, Dunwoody will award 10 students a 

$1,000 scholarship.

Women’s Luncheon 

Nearly 150 students, faculty, staff and guests attended this year’s 

Kate L. Dunwoody Women’s Luncheon that acknowledged the achievements 

and significance of women at Dunwoody, past and present, who exhibit 

character traits of the late Mrs. Kate Dunwoody. 

Karla Marshall, an Interior Design student and a recipient of a 

Kate L. Dunwoody Scholarship, thanked all supporters of Dunwoody who help 

students realize their dreams to get an education. The other recipients of the 

scholarship were Brittney Brown, Interior Design; Linda Fiets, Graphic Design; 

Alysse Johnson-Strandjord, Graphic Design; Holly Longen, Web Programming 

and Database Development; Sarah Oerter, Interior Design; and Anne Pelton, 

Press and Finishing Technology. 

The keynote speech was delivered by LouAnne Reger, owner and CEO of 

J&L Steel and Electrical Services, a more than 30-year old company in 

Hudson, Wisc. that provides structural steel, tension rebar and ornamental rail. 

LouAnne’s address was entitled “Being Grateful” and reflected on her lifelong 

journey, and she said her mantra is: “If you see it, and believe it, you can 

achieve it, no matter what it may be.”

50-Year Club, Legacy 

Association enjoy vintage 

aircraft museum 

More than 250 alumni and friends picnicked in a 45,000 square foot 

airplane hangar among 35 antique and one-of-a-kind aircraft from 

America’s Golden Age of Aviation on Aug. 12 at the Golden Wings Museum. 

The museum features airplanes from the 1920s and 1930s and is located at 

the Anoka County Airport in Blaine. Charles Lindberg and Amelia Earhart 

are among the notable aviators who have flown some of the aircraft. 

For the first time the 50-Year Club Lunch and the Legacy Association Lunch 

were held together. The 50-Year Club is open to alumni who attended 

Dunwoody 50 or more years ago. The Legacy Association is a special group 

of alumni and friends who have provided for future generations through a gift 

in their will or trust. During the lunch, alumni connected with classmates and 

made new friends while they reminisced about the school days of time clocks, 

the bakery, and Dunwoody’s no-nonsense learning style.

John P. Walsh, who served as president of Dunwoody Institute from 1968 to 

1978, died Dec. 10, 2009. He was 94. 

Walsh began his career as a machinist and then later served as a machine 

shop instructor at Dunwoody. He became president in 1968 and during his 

decade-long tenure Dunwoody dedicated the “Warren Building,” which had 

been donated to the college by the estate of H.E. Warren; graduated its first 

women from the full-time Day School programs, remodeled the Architectural and Baking 

departments and the Decker Auditorium; expanded Dunwoody training internationally; and 

launched the $6 million “Vital Source” capital campaign. 

The College named its manufacturing technology center in honor of Dr. Walsh and his wife 

Marie in 2008. A resident of New London, N.H., at the time of his death, Dr. Walsh is survived by 

his wife. The Walsh family has provided generously for Dunwoody in their estate plans.

DEAR FRIENDS: 

A quote from Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities best summarizes 2009: “It was the best of times. It was the 

worst of times…” By almost every measure, the 2009 fiscal year was the most challenging in Dunwoody’s long, 

storied history. A deeply troubled economy, declining equity markets and a growing pension liability — along with 

a subsequent change in our credit positions — resulted in a significant negative change in net assets from the 

previous year. This created a very difficult operating environment, requiring substantial expense cuts throughout 

the college, and, sadly, costing 25 valued Dunwoody employees their jobs. 

However, just as you would expect, the Dunwoody community responded. Faculty and staff faced the situation headon 

and remained focused on our mission of teaching and learning. As a result, we saw great progress in key areas 

and celebrated several outstanding individual and institutional accomplishments. We also saw continued generous 

financial support from employees, alumni, board members, industry partners and other key contributors. 

These are just some of the many 2009 highlights 

• We successfully completed our Good to Great campaign, which reminded us of the many outstanding 

recent campus improvements 

• The welding lab was transformed into a cutting-edge training facility 

• Dunwoody won the “Incubation of Young Talent” award from Enterprise Minnesota magazine 

• HVAC senior instructor Tom Kleinman was named one of eight finalists for American Technical Educators 

Association’s Outstanding Technical Teacher award 

• Dunwoody’s innovative Youth Career Awareness Program celebrated its 20th anniversary 

• The College’s first Health Sciences and Technology programs were launched 

• Dunwoody Custom Training went green and found great interest in its Residential Energy Auditing program 

• Architecture and Construction Supervision students competed in the National Association of Home Builders 

competition in Las Vegas 

• Dunwoody students took three first-place award at SkillsUSA Minnesota and fared well at the 

national competition 

• Dunwoody robot Rugburn took first place in the Midwest Robotics League championships 

• A group of Dunwoody students built homes with Habitat for Humanity 

• A Machine Tool Technology student placed 3rd in the MasterCAM competition 

• Our Phoenix Challenge team took two first-place awards in a national flexography printing competition 

• Dunwoody Instructors volunteered at Minnesota Technical Educators Association High School 

Super Mileage Challenge at Brainerd International Raceway 

• Chrysler acknowledged the excellence of Dunwoody’s Chrysler College Automotive Program by 

investing an additional $13,000 in the program 

• Our new websites were launched 

• Dunwoody TV commercials won two national first-place awards 

• The Career Services department launched numerous Competitive Job Search 

Seminars to help both recent graduates and alumni 

And, most important, we graduated nearly 600 students from Dunwoody. 

The 2010 academic year is well underway and I am pleased to report that our 

finances are improving, great teaching and learning occurs on our campus every 

day and our future is bright. We continue to be mission-focused and student-driven 

and I am absolutely certain that Dunwoody’s best days lie squarely ahead of us.

Ways to Give 

More than 85% of Dunwoody students receive some type of financial assistance. Dunwoody is able to subsidize 

part of the tuition and offer financial aid to students because of contributors like you. Below are some of the ways 

to make a gift to the College. For additional information on how you can make a difference in the education of

WAYS TO GIVE 

• CASH donations of all amounts can either be 

designated for a particular area of interest or 

designated as an unrestricted gift. 

• CHECKS should be made payable to Dunwoody 

College of Technology. 

• Charitable gifts of appreciated STOCK offer a double 

tax benefit. In addition to receiving the charitable 

income-tax deduction for the full fair-market value of 

the stock, you could avoid any potential tax on the 

capital gain. 

• Dunwoody accepts CREDIT CARD payments using 

Discover, Master Card and Visa. American Express 

is accepted online. Setting up a monthly payment 

plan is easy and spreads the payment over the course 

of a year. 

• Identified EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES support 

redirects operating budget support away from 

financing goods to directly funding programs and 

services to help students, are eligible for tax receipt 

and provides visibility for your business. 

• An outright gift of PROPERTY OR LAND allows you 

to avoid capital gains taxes and take a charitable 

deduction on the fair market value of the property, up 

to 30% of the donor’s adjusted gross income. If the 

gift is made with retained life estate, this allows you 

to live in the property until death, at which time the 

property is transferred without going through probate. 

• Dunwoody is proud to have more than 115 current 

members of the Dunwoody Legacy Association, made 

up of alumni and friends who have made provisions in 

their WILLS OR ESTATE PLANS for the College. 

Your will is more than just a legal document. It 

reflects your personal values, love and concern for 

family, friends, and your community. One way to show 

your love and concern for others is to include a 

bequest to charitable institutions such as Dunwoody. 

AREAS OF SUPPORT 

• Contributions to Dunwoody’s ANNUAL FUND make 

it possible to subsidize student tuition by keeping 

operational costs as low as possible. Annual Fund 

gifts can be made through automatic withdrawal, 

check, credit card payment or via the Web. Dunwoody 

also encourages those who have matching gift 

programs through their companies to take advantage 

of those programs. 

• Dunwoody SCHOLARSHIP contributions support the 

General Scholarship Fund and contributions can be 

made in the name of a loved one. Dunwoody 

scholarships are offered in many different varieties, 

including program-specific, need-based, merit-based, 

and organization affiliations. Dunwoody students are 

grateful for the scholarship support they receive to 

pursue their Dunwoody education. 

• Gifts made to SPECIAL PROJECTS help to maintain 

and create new facilities, endow scholarships, 

develop new programs and support capital 

improvements. 

WAYS TO HONOR A LOVED ONE 

• Preserve your spot in Dunwoody’s history by placing 

a brick order today. Your brick will be displayed in 

Dunwoody’s ALUMNI AND FRIENDS WALKWAY 

outside the Carlson Commons entrance. The walkway 

efforts support Dunwoody’s capital initiatives. 

• An ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP in the name of an 

instructor, loved one or alumnus creates permanent 

support and is often one of the highest honors and 

levels of gift options. 

• Memorializing a loved one by NAMING A 

CLASSROOM, LAB OR PROGRAM AREA allows 

the donor and family the opportunity to revisit the 

location and witness the good the gift has done.
