Welcome Our Summer Interns<br />
Through the generosity of the Lilly Endowment's<br />
<strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> Intern Initiative, the <strong>Wabash</strong><br />
<strong>Valley</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> has been fortunate<br />
to be able to employ three<br />
interns for the summer.<br />
Mark Schmitz is our<br />
administrative support intern,<br />
assisting with day-to-day activities<br />
of the <strong>Foundation</strong>. He is a<br />
biochemistry major at DePauw<br />
University and is a member of<br />
DePauw’s Phi Delta <strong>The</strong>ta chapter.<br />
Mark is a native of Terre Haute. He<br />
is an avid soccer fan, having played<br />
on Terre Haute South Vigo High<br />
School’s varsity team and the Terre<br />
Haute Flyers traveling team. He will<br />
be returning to DePauw University in<br />
the fall to begin his sophomore year.<br />
Kayleigh Olah is our database development intern creating<br />
a user-friendly scholarship database that students and parents<br />
can use to find information about area scholarships. She is an<br />
Informatics major at Indiana University.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Wabash</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> had the<br />
privilege of working with three interns during the<br />
spring semester who were with us through the<br />
generous support of the Lilly Endowment <strong>Community</strong><br />
<strong>Foundation</strong> Intern Initiative. We thank them for their<br />
hard work and wish them all the best.<br />
Carolyne Holcomb was our special events intern. She helped<br />
plan our 2011 Designated and Agency Grant Awards and our<br />
<strong>Community</strong> Expo. Carolyne finished her internship with the<br />
<strong>Foundation</strong> just in time to compete in the Miss Indiana Pageant at<br />
the end of June. Her career plans are contingent on the results of<br />
the competition.<br />
Kayleigh also is a Terre Haute native. She is a member of the<br />
Undergraduate Women in Computers Club at IU and works with<br />
the club to create a sense of belonging for women majoring in<br />
the field of computers. Kayleigh is<br />
an avid photographer and edits her<br />
own photos. She will be returning to<br />
Indiana University in the fall to begin<br />
her senior year.<br />
James Ross is our marketing and<br />
social media intern, assisting with<br />
our 20th Anniversary Celebration<br />
materials and other marketing<br />
materials. He is a marketing major<br />
at the Kelley School of Business at<br />
Indiana University.<br />
James is a native of Terre Haute and<br />
has been involved in community<br />
endeavors. He is a member of the<br />
Rotaract Club of Indiana University<br />
and has worked with the Bloomington<br />
chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters through his membership in<br />
the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He will be returning to<br />
Indiana University in the fall to begin his senior year.<br />

Interns can apply for 2011-2012<br />
Holly Sears served as our public relations/journalism intern,<br />
handling media relations for many of our events, developing the<br />
material, putting together packets, and contacting the media about<br />
upcoming events. Holly has now moved to San Francisco and<br />
works for Edelman, an independent public relations firm.<br />
Mark Ellis served since June 2010 as our audit and financial<br />
forecasting intern. He helped compile and organize all the material<br />
needed to have the <strong>Foundation</strong> meet recertification standards<br />
on ethics. Mark also helped with finances and forecasting, giving<br />
detailed presentations on financial forecasting to our Board of<br />
Directors. Mark now works in Fishers, Indiana, as a systems<br />
engineer for ORS, Inc., a medical software design company.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Lilly Endowment <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> Intern Initiative is a pilot program that makes it possible for Indiana<br />
community foundations to engage paid interns from Indiana colleges and universities. Students interested in interning<br />
with the <strong>Foundation</strong> during the 2011-2012 academic year should submit their application, cover letter and reference list.<br />

"Better Together" Indeed<br />
<strong>The</strong> Better Together initiative brings to life the<br />
<strong>Foundation</strong>'s mission to engage people, build<br />
resources and strengthen community.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Better Together Grant initiative<br />
was announced in 2009 to encourage<br />
collaboration between two or more<br />
local nonprofits that focus on similar<br />
community issues. <strong>The</strong> first two "Better<br />
Together" grants of $25,000 each<br />
were awarded in March to Partners<br />
Advancing Literacy Skills (PALS) and<br />
the Court Ordered Placement for<br />
Education (C.O.P.E.)<br />
<strong>The</strong> Vigo County School Corporation,<br />
the Vigo County Public Library, Indiana<br />
State University and Hamilton Center<br />
joined forces to create the PALS<br />
program. <strong>The</strong> program’s goal is to encourage<br />
and improve literacy and writing development skills<br />
in students. <strong>The</strong> PALS program currently targets Vigo County fifth<br />
grade students and has effectively helped improve their Language<br />
Arts scores on the ISTEP test.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Wabash</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong><br />
has granted more than $15 million to<br />
worthy nonprofit organizations serving<br />
the residents of Clay, Sullivan and Vigo<br />
counties since 1991.<br />
To celebrate its 20th anniversary and to focus<br />
the spotlight on several nonprofit agencies, the<br />
<strong>Foundation</strong> has planned a <strong>Community</strong> Expo for<br />
Thursday, September 15, 2011 from 5 to 7:30<br />
p.m. at Hulman Center.<br />
Judy Lowe, PALS Coordinator, explains the impact of PALS.<br />
<strong>The</strong> C.O.P.E. program is a court administered alternative to outof-school<br />
suspension. It was developed through a partnership<br />
between the Clay <strong>Community</strong> Schools, the Clay County Circuit<br />
Court, the Clay County Prosecutor, the Clay County <strong>Community</strong><br />
Corrections and the Clay County Sheriff’s<br />
Department. <strong>The</strong> program is comprised of<br />
supervised educational activities, behavior<br />
modification/skill building activities and<br />
community service work crew projects.<br />
<strong>The</strong> goal is to ensure that children in Clay<br />
County attend school, remain safe and<br />
receive a good education.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Expo will highlight the philanthropic efforts of 63 nonprofit<br />
agencies that serve Clay, Sullivan or Vigo counties and have<br />
agency endowment funds in the <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong>. In<br />
addition to their displays, these agencies can vie for a portion<br />
of $20,000 as selected by a vote of the attendees that evening.<br />
