She was the firstwoman to graduate from the BowmanGray School of Medicine and the firstwoman to serve as president of theBowman Gray Alumni Association.Along with her husband, the late Dr.James Taylor Brooks, she practicedmedicine in Greensboro, where shewas the city’s first female gynecologist,from 1948 until 1988. She served on themedical school’s Board of Visitors andon the boards of various arts organizationsin Greensboro. She and her husbandwere also major benefactors to themedical school.William C. Palmer (’44), May 12, 2006,Shelby, NC. He served in the Army AirForce during World War II. He workedfor 18 years as personnel director ofHudson Hosiery Mill and retired after 17years as personnel and public relationsdirector of J.P. He was a familyphysician in Hoke Country (Raeford, NC)for 52 years and served on the staff ofMoore Memorial Hospital in Pinehurstfor 29 years. He served on the<strong>University</strong>’s board of trustees in the1970s. He was in the U.S. Navyduring World War II and a civilian scientistand executive in Defense Electronicsfor 40 years. He became technical directorof the U.S. Army Electronics Researchand Development Command.John Dewitte Muse Jr. (’49), Jan. 20,2006, Granite Falls, NC. He was a WorldWar II veteran. He was a funeral directorin Ahoskie, NC, and was postmaster atWindfall, Gatesville, Conway andGranite Falls, NC, retiring in 1986.Charles George Owen (’49), April 18,2006, Delray Beach, FL. He served in theAir Force during World War II. He wasdrafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers andwas a teacher and coach from 1951 untilretiring as a guidance counselor in 1983.George H. Pryor (’49), July 6, 2006,Orlando, FL. He served during WorldWar II aboard an aircraft carrier. Hetaught and coached in the OrangeCounty School System, retiring after40 years.Carl David Rosenbaum (’49), June 25,2006, Fayetteville, NC. He retired in1992 as vice president of industrialsales at North Carolina Natural Gasin Fayetteville.Phyllis Timberlake Ross (’49), May 15,2006, Charlotte, NC.
