A word from our Reps
Hello fellow Warriors, hopefully by now the snow will have cleared away ( I am writing this in
February) and the riding season for most of us is just around the corner. Just because the winter
weather is not warm enough for most of us to go riding I do hope those of you who don't ride all
year round have been able to get out and have a little run round on the nice days we have had in
January. Some of us have not been resting on our laurels, we have continued to fly the Saxon
flag with Tracey and myself attending the Northern area dinner dance in Harrogate in January
which was very well attended by members from nine regional centres. A great weekend to kick
off 2012. One week after that Tracey and myself, along with Vaughan, Mary and Chris went
along to the C19 (Essex) Christmas dinner and again had a good laugh with other VSOC
members. Hopefully we will see you out and about on your bikes soon, with the warmer weather
approaching the events and things to do list will give you all plenty of opportunities to 'get your
motor running' as the song goes
In April we have our regular two Sunday meetings on the 1st and 8th followed by 'Bikers in
Paradise' at Broxbourne, Herts on the 15th or alternatively if you fancy it 'Gathering of the Clans'
which sets off from Leicester East Services on the same day. The weekend of the 21st/22nd will
see some of us at the Jumpstart Party in Buxton and then on the 29th we have a ride out to the
Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum, free to get in which is always a bonus these days, would be
nice to get a few bikes there to see if we can get a picture of the bikes with planes. We are
planning to meet at Bury St Edmunds Tesco's car park (off jct 43 on the A14) at 10.30 for an 11
o’clock departure. It is approx 35 miles from Bury to Flixton. Website (if you want a sneak
preview) is www.aviationmuseum.net
Guess that's all for now and hope to see you all soon
Until then Ride Safe
Bike Trailers
Now that I have a motorcycle trailer and there seems to be a lot of interest from other members, I thought
that I would just give out some information on the law about towing, as for the actual towing I found that
the only thing to worry about is forgetting it’s there, this may depend on what trailer you have.
UK Motorbike Towing Law
Legally for a solo motorcycle to tow it must have an engine capacity over 125cc.
The trailer must not exceed 1 metre in width.
The distance from the rear wheel spindle to the back of the trailer must not exceed 2.5 metres.
The Motorcycle must be marked with it’s kerbside weight.
The trailer must be marked with its unladen weight.
Maximum towed weight, including the trailer and it’s load must not exceed 150 Kg. (330 lb.) or two
thirds of the motorcycles un-laden weight, whichever is least.
The UK speed limit is 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways.
Cannot use the 3rd lane of a motorway
Lighting regulations are the same as other small trailers.
You cannot tow more than one trailer, and passengers are not allowed to be carried inside the trailer
(Damn it, Rosann will have to remain on the pillion seat lol).
Legal requirements vary from country to country and in some European countries it is illegal to tow with a
motorbike. In those counties where it is illegal, towing is permitted to visiting UK citizens during their stay. I
would recommend you check with the relevant authorities before travelling just to be sure.
Insurance is another matter, my insurance (Churchill) only covers it 3rd party while on the bike, so I need
to take out a separate insurance to cover loss and damage, your house insurance may cover this but need
to checked as mine with Sheila's wheels covers item in out building up to £5000 but this does not cover
anything that can be towed away, such as trailers or boats so make sure you check the small print
Editor’s thoughts
Winter months
Motorcycling during the winter months is not for everyone, so meeting up with fellow bikers and
club friends can become few and far between, I am pleased that this past winter the Sunday
meets have still been well attended, and with our Christmas do and other centre’s party’s taking
place attended by C10 members, have made the months fly by, so now that we are getting
close to summer, I’m looking forward to riding the bike again
So keep an eye on the events page and the web site to make the most of the summer
This addition has a 6 month calendar at the end to print off so you don’t miss anything
Racing times
Having been brought a ticket for the British GP at Silverstone this year (along with Dave) for
Christmas it got me thinking about when I started going to live motorcycle racing for the first
time. I was about 12 when a friend of my dads who ran the local Dunmow motorcycle club in
Essex took me along to watch the grass track racing at Ugley and scrambling at Stebbing. It
wasn’t long after that I had my first go at marshalling, it took place at a trials event, I really
didn’t know what I was doing but I got the bug and after that continued to marshal at many
different motorcycling events, including circuit racing at Mallory and Oulton parks and a local
production bike race which was held at RAF Debden, which was not being used by the
military at that time, but is now home to 33 Engineers regiment under the name of Carver Barracks,
although most of my marshalling was done at motocross events. If anyone is inclined
to do some marshalling make sure you have your wits about you, especially if you’re manning
the bomb hole as bikes come out of nowhere from a great height, I wouldn’t do it now, I’m too
old and slow!
I have attended many motorcycling events over the years including some that no longer exist,
like watching world speedway at Wembley when Ole Olsen was crowned world champion
watched by a massive crowd which I’m sure they would like to see again. In the 70’s watching
the likes of Kenny Roberts and Barry Sheene at the transatlantic trophy races at Brands
Hatch was a real treat. The Dutch TT is also a must for racing fans and Assen is a real party
place to be during a TT weekend, obviously a trip to the IOM is a must (been twice) but again
beware, an old work mate of mine crashed his Ducati on mad Sunday and as far as I know it’s
still there.
If you have never been to a motorcycle race of any type give it a go, it’s much better than car
racing and I’m sure you’ll have a great time.
What’s new from Yamaha?
(excerpt from online article)
2011 Yamaha Stryker
Carrying on from the Raider, Yamaha have now produced a smaller version called the
Stryker
The all new 2011 Yamaha Stryker, a machine designed to be ridden… and admired. Chopper
inspired styling, attention to detail and mechanical function blend together in a stunning new
mid class “chopper”. One ride and you will know we got it right. The style, the performance
and that special attitude is intoxicating.
The Stryker is the coolest bike to roll off the assembly line since the Yamaha Raider took the
industry by storm. With its raked out front end and “fists in the wind” riding position, this bike
is pure attitude. And with fuel injection, a 1304cc V-Twin, and a beautiful final belt drive, the
2011 Yamaha Stryker churns out plenty of low-end torque that gets to the ground in a very
satisfying way. It’s time for an attitude adjustment!
Powered by a liquid-cooled, 1304cc V-twin power plant, the new Stryker offers an unparalleled
riding experience.
The looks are guaranteed to turn heads while the engine performance and sound will keep
you grinning all day. But there is more. It is hard to put into words but one ride and you will
discover its unique “bad boy” attitude.
Unfortunately the Stryker like the Raider has to be imported from the US, there is a very large
range of Yamaha cruisers available but Yamaha UK only officially import a couple of them,
this is a shame as the new range are some of the best cruisers around by far, there is only
one Stryker currently in the UK owned by Janet Butterworth VSOC
