When I became president of Virginia Western Community College nine years ago, someone told me our
college was the best-kept secret in the region. While I know that comment was made with the best
intentions, I do not believe anyone would characterize Virginia Western that way today. In fact, I have been
struck again and again by the enthusiastic support of our community - the local governments, businesses and
corporations, citizens, faculty, staff and students - for the academic programming and workforce training our
college offers. Our potential is unlimited! This year we not only experienced record admission numbers
but also graduated the largest class in our history. Our college has agreements with 32 four-year colleges and
universities, allowing seamless transfer opportunities for our graduates. Because we believe no one who truly
desires higher education should be deterred because of financial obstacles, we launched Community College
Access Programs for the cities of Salem and Roanoke. We will initiate a similar program in Franklin County this
coming year with the goal of establishing programs throughout our service region in the next five years. We
also broke ground this fall on a new Center for Science and Health Professions.
We are excited to share our accomplishments with you in this year’s annual report. We are particularly
grateful for the financial support of the donors listed in this report. It is because of their commitment that
Virginia Western continues to be the region’s premier training facility and the most affordable place in our
region to get a world-class education.

The Year In Pictures...
At the college’s 44th commencement ceremony on May 14,
2010, Virginia Western celebrated the largest graduating
class in the college’s history. With a near-capacity crowd
filling the Salem Civic Center, fall, spring, and summer
graduates were recognized for their academic achievement
and were welcomed to the ranks of Virginia Western
alumni, joining over 20,000 graduates across the
Commonwealth and beyond.

The 3rd annual Technology Summit
allowed over 200 area high school
students to explore various careers
and opportunities available from area
firms and explore how a Virginia
Western education can help them

Virginia Western
recently broke ground
for the Center for
Science and Health
Professions, a $27.5million-dollar,68,000square-footbondfunded
facility to house
the college’s health
professions and science
programs. The facility is
expected to open in fall
2012.

The City of Salem was awarded the 2010 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in
Philanthropy for its continued support of the Community College Access Program
(CCAP) for Salem. Because of the City of Salem’s leadership, the first CCAP students
graduated from Virginia Western in May 2010.

Roanoke Cement recently joined the ranks of the many satisfied
businesses and industries that have contracted with the college’s
Workforce Solutions team to provide on-site customized training. Eight
of its employees successfully completed the Electrical Wiring certificate
program on-site at the company’s plant on Catawaba Road.
“I was very pleased with the flexibility of the school around different
work schedules,” said Chris Bayne, Electrical Engineer with Roanoke
Cement. “All of the men who participated in the program were on
different schedules, so the willingness of Virginia Western to accommodate
their schedules was very helpful.” Bayne was also very pleased
with the quality of the instruction and expects it will be very beneficial
for the company down the road.
Completion of this program allows the employees to apply for
Department of Professional and Occupational Regulations (DPOR)
approval to receive certification as journeyman electricians. A journeyman
is a type of contractor that can perform construction, repair,
maintenance, alteration, or removal of electrical systems under the
National Electric Code. Bayne says this training and certification will be
very beneficial for these men several years down the road and helps to
highlight the need and convenience of on-site training for companies
such as Roanoke Cement.

As a 2010 graduate of Virginia Western, Leslie Wallace certainly used the Hall
Associates Career and Employment Assistance Center to her benefit, and
eventually to a job with Norfolk Southern.
As a student, Leslie completed career assessments and received career
counseling through the Hall Associates Career Center and worked with its
staff on her interview skills, resume writing, and other skills. In September
2009, Norfolk Southern offered her a full-time position with the organization
as a filing clerk. Since that time, Leslie has moved from filing clerk into billing,
and recently applied for and moved into a position as a head billing clerk. “I
was in a dead-end job before and now have a great job, with a great company,
and work in a great environment. I love my job and the people I work with,
and working with the Career Center helped me achieve this,” states Wallace.
Leslie completed the Business Administration program (with honors) at
Virginia Western and has now transferred to Radford University as an
Accounting major.

In 2009 – 2010, the Virginia Western Community College Educational Foundation assisted 393
students with scholarships, special funds, and the CCAP process.

The Community College Access Program (CCAP) is a public/private partnership that makes college available tuition free to
current graduates of public high schools in the cities of Roanoke and Salem who meet program guidelines. The program covers
the cost of tuition for two years at Virginia Western Community College. CCAP supports as many students as possible based on
student need and funds available for the program. CCAP is dependent upon support annually from public and private sources, so
the amount of CCAP funds available may vary from year to year. A pilot CCAP for Franklin County will be launched in 2011 –
2012.
