an unrivalled polo destination.
apart from hosting international tournaments
and high society events such as the BMW
polo international, the val de vie polo Club
members play polo weekly matches in season.
the excitement of the sport has spurred on a
growth in the polo school, which has scheduled
lessons for beginners and amateurs every week
during the polo season that runs from october
to april.
val de vie offers two of the finest, most
luxurious grounds in the country, completed
to Hurlingham international Championship
standards.
A brief history
polo is experiencing phenomenal growth
worldwide. described as the King of Games and
the Game of Kings, the sport was introduced
to south africa by the British infantry in the
nineteenth century. the first recorded game
took place in october 1874 and in the early
1900’s several civilian clubs began to emerge.
it was not long until the south african polo
association was formed in 1906.
today polo is becoming accessible to more
and more people, enjoyed by young and old,
women and men. val de vie has revived the
sport of kings in the Western Cape, putting the
estate on the map as one of the world’s top polo
destinations.

POLO ManageMent
MAnAger And CAptAin: Kevin rixon
a humble polo professional, Kevin started playing polo from
the age of nine, his father and brothers are all competitive
players. He also spent one year fine tuning his technique in
england where he attained a 4 Goal handicap. Kevin has
played the sport at provincial level and now plays off a 2 Goal
handicap. He recently returned from Zambia and Zimbabwe
where he represented the invitational team. He currently
captains the val de vie polo team, coaches and manages the
sport as a Whole on the estate.
equestriAn MAnAger: tehri fergusson
tehri joined the team during 2010 as polo administrator and
equestrian manager. a former show jumping champion, tehri
has been competing since 1992 and has represented both her
province and her country a number of times. she is currently
training with legendary show jumping rider, Gonda Betrix.
tehri offers lessons in numerous equestrian disciplines.
stAble MAnAger: george MuMbA
originally from Zimbabwe, George has been stable master at
val de vie for two years. Being a keen player himself, George has
an endearing love for horses and a thorough comprehension of
equestrian needs and polo as a sport. Horse owners can be rest
assured their four-legged friends are in good hands.

stAbles
the stylish val de vie stable block caters for the comfort of horse and
rider. the spacious drive-through stable block, with 64 loose boxes,
is designed for optimal ventilation. daily manure disposal, excellent
drainage, hygienic management and biological fly control ensure odourfree
and healthy stables. other facilities include fully equipped tack
rooms, lunging rings, exercise track and practice field. Not to mention
the exclusive Founders lounge Club House where clients have access to
change rooms and are able to relax in style after an exhilarating day on
the field.
livery
Complete livery and exercise care is available for participants of all
equestrian disciplines. Horses are provided with daily turn out in secure
camps with expert care provided by an on-site professional team.
grooMs
the val de vie Grooms take care of each horse’s daily needs, from feeding
and grooming to exercising the ponies and getting them tacked up for
polo. Under the ever-watchful eye of stable Master, George Mumba,
every groom is given ongoing training to become a skilled equestrian
expert in his own right. “after all,” he says, “your groom spends more
time with your horses than you do.”
