y Florilegium, an amateur chorus in New York City, through a grant from the New York State Council onthe Arts in 1986. Its world premiere occurred at MerkinHall in June of that year, and it has been performednumerous times throughout the United States, including a performance by the New York VirtuosoSingers in 2004.MEDITATIONS AT THE TIME OF THE NEW YEARThe texts of the two movements of Meditations at theTime of the New Year are drawn from parts of variouscreative silent meditations that typically supplementthe Rosh Hashana liturgy in many Reform synagogueservices. The first movement, Dawn, is basicallycontemplative in its overall mood. Renewal—one ofthe principal spiritual themes in the liturgy of RoshHashana—is expressed with transparent but judiciouslylayered textures. The second movement, Hope, is moreforceful, progressing from dense clusters to upliftingchords, especially at the words “Glory to those whohope.” This spirit of optimism, too, is one of the JewishNew Year’s dominant liturgical sentiments. The piececoncludes with a calm coda that recalls the ambienceof reverential prayer, its words taken from a wellknownEnglish translation in classical Reform liturgy:“May the words of my mouth and the meditations ofmy heart be acceptable to Thee, O Lord.”A subtle and sparsely scored percussion accompanimentfeatures bell sounds on glockenspiel and chimes.Meditations was commissioned by the Concert Choir ofSkidmore College and was composed in 1997.—Neil W.
