The citation in the Register reads that the railway route is important as anoutstanding example of railway engineering with its substantial stone lined tunnel,massive cuts through granite, stone pitching and its incorporation of steep gradientsand sharp curves. Atherton Tablelands Rail Trails Feasibility Studybecoming uncommon such as the small early twentieth century timber stations ofRavenshoe, Herberton and Tumoulin and a number of timber trestle bridges,particularly the bridge across the Wild River. The railway line is valued by thecommunity and visitors for providing an outstanding aesthetic experience due to thenumber of viewpoints commanding extensive panoramas, the Carrington Waterfallsand the varied experience of travelling through narrow rock cuts, across rivers,through forests and tunnels and up and down steep gradients.The Register of the National Estate is a list of natural, Indigenous and historic heritageplaces throughout Australia. It was originally established under the Australian HeritageCommission Act 1975. Under that Act, the Australian Heritage Commission enteredmore than 13,000 places in the register.In early 2004, a new national heritage system was established under the EnvironmentProtection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). This led to theintroduction of the National Heritage List, which was designed to recognise and protectplaces of outstanding heritage to the nation, and the Commonwealth Heritage List,which includes Commonwealth owned or leased places of significant heritage value.Each state and territory government, and local government, has a similarresponsibility for its own heritage.The new legislative regime means that places on the Register at that time are to beassessed and transferred to coverage under appropriate State and Local Governmentheritage legislation. The Atherton-Ravenshoe corridor was nominated in 1992 for theQueensland Heritage Register, but this application was not supported by theQueensland Heritage Council (decision made March 2008). The EPA is considering thecorridor for potential cultural heritage significance as part of a state-wide survey beingundertaken in 2008-09. The corridor does not appear to be protected by heritagedesignations within local government planning schemes. In the former Herbertonplanning scheme, some parts of it fall within the Herberton town heritage precinct(which generally follows the main highway through town). The former Athertonplanning scheme recognises Platypus Park as part of a cultural heritage tourismprecinct.This recognition of its heritage value does not necessarily have a major impact on thepossibility of using the corridor as a rail trail, particularly as the rail trail would notthreaten any of the values of the corridor as listed in the citation.
