Letter from the PresidentA Perfect 10Spring2009Early this May theentire community ofHoly Family willgather at the centercircle drive tocelebrate theconclusion of theschool’s second capitalcampaign, to dedicatethe new life-sizebronze statue of St.John Baptist de LaSalle and two of ourstudents leadingprayer at convocation, and to inaugurate thebeginning of our 10th Anniversary as a Catholic highschool in Victoria. It will be a great day! Our communityhas come “a long way” from celebrating groundbreakingin the middle of a cornfield to dedicating the SlatteryAthletic & Convocation Center! We have grown from asmall new school of 146 students in 2000 to a thrivingdestination for more than 600 students as we gather onthe threshold of 2010! As Archbishop Flynn stated sobeautifully on October 1, 2008, when we gathered tounveil our new strategic plan, “Holy Family’s birth andgrowth have been guided by the Hand of God and thehard work of so many dedicated and generous believers!”10 is a very special number in the Bible. There are 10Commandments, 10 Nations under Abraham, 10 plagues,10 times the people of Israel shouted for joy as a people ofGod, 10 parables in which Jesus referenced the Kingdomof God, and 10 times God sent FIRE upon the earth! 10 isconsidered a “perfect number” in the Bible because it isnot only the foundation of our numeric system butbecause it signifies that “the whole cycle is complete!”To the founders of our school 10 is also a perfect and holynumber. Upon the celebration of our 10 th Anniversary,Holy Family is no longer a brand new school in search ofitself; it is now a highly regarded college preparatoryschool serving families of all socio-economic groups andstudents of all different learning levels, and educatingthem all within the system of values established by St.John Baptist de La Salle, the Patron Saint of all Teachers!Prior to winning the State Basketball Tournament in2008, people everywhere, including the televisioncommentators, wanted to know where Holy Family andCity of Victoria were! Today Holy Family Catholic HighSchool and the City of Victoria are partners in numerousventures! The students and faculty at Holy Family havewon numerous awards in and out of the classroom, andthe City of Victoria is considered the next thrivingsuburban city on the outer ring of the Twin Cities! HolyFamily and Victoria have come a long way, almost fullcycle, in ten short, but quick years! From “cows to kids”and from “farms to Fresh Seasons Market,” Holy Familyhas been a very special part of many peoples’ dreams anda very blessed fruition of God’s Plan.So as we gather around the center circle drive to celebratethe achievements of our capital campaign the fertilizedthe soil, to dedicate the statue of St. John Baptist de LaSalle which publicly highlights the values upon which wehave continued to grow, and to inaugurate the beginningof our 10th anniversary, let us always remember theimportance of the number 10. It is not just a perfectnumber upon which the foundation of our whole numericsystem is based; it is also a very holy number upon whichthe foundation of our faith is based. And to all of thedreamers and founders and donors who have been such aspecial part of the Holy Family community throughoutthis past decade from the “founding four in the coffeeshop” to the Dynamic Development Duo of PaulStauffacher and Rob Roy, to Kathie Brown, our Principalof the Decade —— on a scale of 1-to-10, I am honored tosay, “Your spark started the FIRE and you are all perfect10’s!”James F. Spring2009Letter from the PrincipalLet us Remember.... . .we are inthe holy presenceof God.There areexpectations andresponsibilitiesinherent inproclaiming to be aLasallian school. They create thefoundation uponwhich our decisionsshould be evaluated, our practicesreviewed, our missionsupported and our best selves discovered. The new statueof St. John Baptist de La Salle at the front entrance to theschool will be a reminder each day of the manyways our staff, students, families, and our faith areinextricably connected. The Lasallian approach to education is not only lifegivingbut transformative. Holy Family is another placein which people learn the Good News. And everyone is alearner. Each of us makes a commitment to haveconfidence in others, to work together, to accept thework each is given, and to hope this work will take uswhere we are meant to lead. Learning to rely on oneanother is an enormous lesson: trust is an act of faith. Our strength is in our faithful community, not in anyindividual. We are linked together and by associationthrough prayer, our experiences, our generosity, ourhospitality. From faith exudes zeal. Zeal makes us alert andresponsive to others’ needs. More than these things, however, zeal helps us see our students, their families, and our colleagues as God sees them. Zeal demandsenergy and creativity in our relationships as well as abalance of patience and passion. De La Salle writes that“Persons must be the center of educational systemsrather than the prestige of some academic curriculum.”Therefore, we work with hope and never give up.In so much of my Lasallian formation I have heard thestatement “God comes to us disguised as our life.”Inherent in this wisdom is the encouragement to walkinto the unknown, to discover what we do not know. Welive in a world we think we understand and hope for abetter one. Both worlds need to be cherished. Changecan occur only if individuals are respected for who theyare now and supported to develop their full potentials. There are many good academic institutions that provideknowledge and skills and care for their students. De LaSalle reminds Lasallian communities that one of ourduties as educators is to touch the hearts of those weteach. We must see Christ in each of our students, ineach of our parents and they must see Christ in us.As these relationships develop, an ordinary schoolenvironment becomes extraordinary. The administrative, teaching, and support staffs ofHoly Family Catholic High School are very intentionalabout nurturing such an extraordinary educationalexperience. Since our Lasallian affiliation in October2005, eighteen of us have attended educationalprograms, some annually. Ten adults have experiencedweek-long immersion formation and four have completedthree-year formation institutes. We are animated by ourdeepened understanding of the Lasallian charism andits influence on our ability to instill Gospel values in allwe do for young people.Come, Holy Spirit, breathe new life into your people.Show us the true meaning of the gospeland enkindle our heartswith a love that will transform our lives.Grant us the unity for which Jesus prayednow and forever. Amen.Prayer of Association • October 19, 2005Kathleen BrownPrincipal2

Spring2009Convocation CircleIt’s All Coming TogetherWhen first approached by Holy Family Advancementofficers to create a large-scale sculpture for the entranceof our school, local artist Deb Zeller happened to beworking on a stone sculpture entitled “The Flame.”A resident of Victoria, MN, Zeller is an accomplishedartist whose talents include not only sculpting, but alsopainting, drawing, creative glassworks and jewelrydesign. With little knowledge of the Catholic high schoolthat had been built in her very own neighborhood, shewas intrigued by the surprise invitation to work withHoly Family. She decided to see the school for herselfand to learn more about what she might be gettingherself into.On the day of her tour, Al Bill greeted her at the doorand shared with her the unique history of thebeginnings of the school. He pointed out the expansivecampus and explained what it had been prior to thebuilding of the school. He told her of the vision of a more“signature” entrance, something that would signal to allthose who entered our halls that they were stepping intoa place that was very, very special.Soon after they had begun their tour, the bell rang. Thehalls became filled with the sights and sounds of livelystudents walking briskly and with a sense of purpose toa designated place. Zeller was somewhat confused by theflurry of activity and asked what was going on. Al wavedfor her to join him and they followed what seemed likeherds of kids to the gymnasium for daily Convocation.Once there, the students quickly settled down in theirseats.“Let us remember that we are in the holy presence ofGod,” announced a student, who then read a shortprayer. The entire student body recited the Our Fatherfollowed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Next—and withoutthe major chaos one might expect from nearly 600teenagers—the students focused their attention on twosomewhat timid students who’d made their way to apodium to address the student body. They looked fearfulof having to speak in front of their classmates, something to which Zeller could relate.“Watch this,” Al said, as the students began theirspeeches. “Watch how the kids support them.” Thinkingback to her own days in school and the typical student’sfear of speaking in front of their class, Zeller expectedthe typical response…kids making noises, heckling thespeakers, or simply not paying attention to what wasbeing said. To her surprise, however, the students hadthe full attention and respect of their peers and shecould see the speakers’ body language changing witheach passing moment…standing a little taller, speakinga little stronger. With the cheers of recognition fromtheir classmates, the students’ confidence grew witheach eruption of applause or shout of support as theycontinued to address them with the news of the day.Convocation.A coming together.Experiencing Holy Family’s community prayer andsupport deeply moved the artist. She instantlyunderstood Al’s description of “special.” At theconclusion of the gathering, she not only knew shewanted to be part of this unique project, but sheinstinctively knew the name for her work of art. It wouldbe “Convocation.”4

Spring2009Convocation CircleZeller left Holy Family that day with afeeling that everything was, indeed, comingtogether. Her encounters with students doingengineering projects in class (Zeller worked inengineering prior to devoting herself to herart) and the school’s fire nickname(coincidentally connecting her currentwork on “The Flame”), as well asher intense emotional responseto participating in dailyConvocation, led her tobelieve she was meantto work onthis project. She immediately began her research on St. John Baptistde La Salle and created her first sketches of the patronsaint. Her concept of him standing with two students, guiding and preparing them for the world, came to heralmost immediately. Laura Woods, who designed thecenter circle brickwork and landscaping, had envisioneda 4-foot statue. But at the urging of Wes Jones from thefoundry, Zeller began to rethink things on agrander scale. She had only once before created a lifesizefigure and was hesitant to take on such a largeproject. However, just like the students at the podiumwhen she visited the school, she found her strength fromthe Holy Family students themselves. In rememberingthose powerful moments, she realized it was only fittingthat the grouping be portrayed standing at the podiumas she had seen them do in Convocation that day.Deb Zeller describes her experience with Holy Familyand this project as “life-changing. It’s the best thing thatever happened to me! It pushed me out of my comfortzone and led me to this wonderful community.”Convocation could not be a more fitting theme for theartful masterpiece that will be installed in the CenterCircle Drive on May 8, 2009. It is a powerful statementof the identity of our school. It is the hallmark of a HolyFamily education. But more than that, this project—likeConvocation—is a true coming together of the spirit ofour students, our Lasallian affiliation and the incredibletalents of our local community. In addition to Deb Zeller, several local artists and residents have participated inthis project.By The Woods owner and master designer,Laura Woods, lives just across the highway from HolyFamily here in Victoria. Her careful and creative designincluded moving the large pine tree, which satprominently in the middle of the circle drive. The treewas carefully uprooted from the center circle andreplanted closer to the building to make way for thechalice-shaped brick path and base for Zeller’s“Convocation” sculpture. Without her keen eye todesign, this project would literally have no foundation.

Convocation CircleSpring2009Though not right in our own backyard, the experts atCasting Creations of Howard Lake, MN, are just ashort drive from Holy Family and are an integral partof the production process. Skilled at turning claymodels into bronze statuary through the lost waxprocess, the artisans from Casting Creations haveprovided their expertise and craftsmanship to transformZeller’s and Hemingway’s creations into the life-sizebronze figures that will become enduring icons of ourschool and community.Minnetonka resident Steve Hemingway is anaccomplished artist. He is gifted in many media, butspecializes in ceramics. His work is on displaythroughout the United States. Mr. Hemingway wascommissioned to create the two chalices that willsupport illuminated glass “Fire” lamps. His talents arevisible in the detailed symbolism skillfully carved intoeach of the chalice bases, which are inscribed with theimagery and elements from the school seal, including theschool’s motto “Ostendite Illis Viam” (Show Them TheWay). (continued on page 8)7

We will be forever grateful to Clarence and DorothyKelzer, our Victoria neighbors and fervent Holy Familysupporters, whose generous contributions made itpossible for us to embark on this large and collaborativeproject. Their enduring gift will not only leave theirmark on this campus, but it will be shared andappreciated by all future students and families whoenter Holy Family Catholic High School past the“Circle of Fire.”that the students of Holy Family are the maininspiration for this project. We teach them, learn fromthem, and grow with them, as they become young adultsready to face the challenges of the world beyond thesewalls. And when they leave us, it is our sincere hopethat they will carry with them that very same strongsense of community, faith and support that theyexperienced each and every day here at Holy Familywhen they gathered together for Convocation. And finally, this great work of art will stand as a visibleand lasting reminder to all who belong to our community8

From the Chairs of the Capital CampaignHeroes Among UsIf the first miracle of Holy Family was the four originalcoffee shop boys, then the second miracle of HolyFamily may have been a gathering we hosted at theFafinski house attended by 20 present and future HolyFamily parents on May 16, 2003. It has been said thatmiracles can be accomplished through hard work andby ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Theproof of that it is in the success of our CapitalCampaign.Back in 2003, Holy Family had 326 students, noalumni, over $25,000,000 in debt and was borrowingheavily from the Archdiocese to continue its operations. The May 16, 2003 meeting was held by a group ofpeople who came together out of concern for the futureof Holy Family. We wanted to explore ways to sustainHoly Family financially until growth in enrollment andother programs would allow the school to functionprofitably from its operations. After a short time, ourgroup quickly figured out that Holy Family neededsupplemental funding and so the concept of a CapitalCampaign was born.We formulated a goal to raise $10,000,000. Traditionalfundraising convention is to start a campaign withseveral multi-million dollar lead gifts to get momentummoving in the right direction. Without alumni, however, we knew from the start that our campaignwould need to be completely different. We needed torely on parents, grandparents and friends who realizedthe unique benefit of having a Catholic high school inthe community. And so we started the private phase of the “TeachingMinds, Touching Hearts, Transforming Lives CapitalCampaign for Holy Family” in mid-2004. By the end ofthat year, we had raised $1,400,000 largely throughgifts from legacy donors who had given Holy Familymoney when the school first started.By the end of 2005, we were planning our publicannouncement of the Capital Campaign and hopingthat we would be half way to our goal. Through a lot ofprayers, hard work and divine intervention, we wereable to announce at a grand celebration on January 26,2006, that Holy Family had received $5,100,000 inpledges and debt forgiveness.Since “going public” in 2006, the Holy Familycommunity has responded with astonishing generosityand enthusiasm. We closed our campaign recently andthe results underscore how much each of you lovesthis institution. This Capital Campaign has yielded$12,364,374 in pledges of cash, non-cash gifts and debtreduction. More importantly, the Capital Campaignhas poised Holy Family to operate independently inthe future. There are so many heroes to thank for the success ofthis campaign:To the original Lead and Major Gift Committee thatmet at the Fafinski house in 2004 and during the yearor so thereafter and who worked on the idea of theCapital Campaign: Tom Boyce, Bill O’Neill, BobHanlon, Dan Gladney, Dan Peterka, Jeff Burzinski,Jim Andersen, Jim Emmer, John Geisler, KathyGullickson, Marty Paradise, Patrick Peyton, PeteRockers, Peter Taunton, Rich Anderson, RonMason, Steve Hanousek, Steve Hockett. Thanks forresponding to our request to help us get organized andfor being such key contributors early in our campaign.11

From the Chairs of the Capital CampaignTo our “Captains”, Bill and Lana Miller, Mike andJane Felmlee, Jim and Nan Emmer, Brian andLorraine LaVelle, Bill and Kristin Henak, Rich andLisa Anderson, Rob and Joleen Roy, Steve and PamSnyder, Patrick Peyton, and Tom and Barb Burke, and others including Peter and Anna King, Al andMary Weingart, and Owen and Mary Steiner, whohosted home parties for the purpose of telling parentsabout the Capital Campaign and who quickly figuredout that our parent community likes to combine a goodparty with supporting our kids — thank you!To Jay Gould — thanks for your great counsel andhelp in getting us organized. To a few special peoplethat helped us out when we really needed it: John andMartha Radick, thanks for getting us over the top justprior to our going public; Tom and Barb Burke —-no one will ever fully appreciate how important youhave been in the history of this school, so from thosethat know, thank you; the Geislers, thanks for yoursteady hands and amazing generosity; Clarence andDorothy Kelzer — thanks for recognizing that HolyFamily is an important addition to your community;Kathie Brown — we know fundraising isn’t yourthing, but our community loves you and you are one ofthe main reasons donors give to Holy Family. To our recently retired Archbishop Harry Flynn —before hearing the story from Rob Roy of yoursupport for Holy Family in the early years, we had12

From the Chairs of the Capital Campaigntaken for granted your faith and influence in the historyof Holy Family. You are a hero of Catholic education andhave been an extraordinary shepherd of our localCatholic community. Holy Family would not exist if itweren’t for you. This campaign spanned the tenures of three Presidentsand one Interim President at Holy Family. To PaulStauffacher: thanks for your vision and forunderstanding our big hairy, audacious goal. To FrankMiley: thanks for finding a way to balance the budgetat Holy Family — it made it easier to tell the story of ourschool to donors. To Interim President Steve Burke:thanks for your fresh ideas and stepping in when weneeded you. And to the “James Brown” of Catholiceducation and the hardest working, most enthusiasticCatholic educator we know — Jim Hamburge. Thanks for getting us over the top. There are always people behind the scenes that neverget recognized for their work and contributions. PatStender and Bob Fafinski’s assistant Terri Ulkuorganized and coordinated multiple meetings, conferencecalls and schedules. If left to us, many of these taskswould have been boggled. And to Shelley, Mary and ourkids — thanks for letting us miss some family dinnersand kid activities so we could work on this campaign. To that short, happy guy in the Advancement Office, whose love for this school and our community hasspanned the entire campaign and who we will missworking with every day. No one has worked harder, taken more grief and expressed more joy about HolyFamily than Al Bill and he deserves a thank you fromour entire community for it.To the best group of people who ever served on anExecutive Committee for a Capital Campaign. MarkLano helped us to understand our neighbors, includingthe farming community. One day we think the farmingcommunity will be the answer to our prayers forpermanent, long-term financial security for Holy Familyand Mark will be a big reason for it.

From the Chairs of the Capital CampaignWe also had the privilege of working with the past andthe future of Holy Family. Bill Slattery led our firstcapital campaign and agreed to help us with this one.His leadership in connecting us with our legacy donorswas a key to our early success. Bill Miller will havekids at Holy Family in a few years and, perhaps, hadthe most to do with our success at the end of thecampaign. Bill will be a positive force at Holy Familyfor years, thank goodness. Although we are happy thatthe campaign has ended successfully, we will missworking with each of you on this adventure. And finally to the alumni and students of Holy Family. We are holding down the fort for you until you cansupport your alma mater and it has been a blast doingit. Embrace your responsibility to support Holy Family, just as your parents, grandparents and neighbors havedone for you. Our parents sacrificed to send us toCatholic grade schools and high schools when we wereyour age and someday you will have to make the samechoice for your kids. Believe us when we tell you thatthe sacrifice is worth every penny. Holy Family willneed you someday and when we see the kind of youngmen and women you are becoming, we know that theschool is in good hands. Finally, thanks to all of our donors and supporters. There is something humbling about askingpeople for financial support, but all of youmade it very easy for us. We never knewthat raising money could be fun, but thatwas only because you made it fun.Holy Family, whether it’s our history ofbeing founded by lay people, the faithtraditions being formed every day

From the Chairs of the Capital Campaignthrough our ministries, the superb staff of teachers andadministrators dedicated to helping our childrenrealize their full potentials, our academic excellence, our sports programs that are rapidly developingchampionship pedigrees, the outstanding music andtheater programs or any of the other activities andministries. All of these many blessings in ourcommunity could not have been happened, norcontinue to happen without all of you, the heroesamong us.Bob FafinskiCo-ChairRich GannonCo-Chair

Spring2009Dedication of the Slattery Athletic & Convocation CenterTrue DedicationThe entire Holy Family Catholic High School studentbody celebrated the dedication of the SlatteryAthletic & Convocation Center (SACC) on themorning of Tuesday, March 31st, 2009. Designed tohonor Bill and Joan Slattery for their years ofdedication to the school, the event was held inconjunction with daily Convocation.Along with Bill and Joan’s immediate family, specialguests included several members of the board, all threepast presidents of Holy Family, esteemed members ofthe Capital Campaign committee and founding membersof the school.Calling attention to Archbishop Flynn’s speech at thecelebration dinner held on October 1, 2008, PresidentJim Hamburge reiterated that “Holy Family has indeedbeen blessed by the Hand of God!”He shared that when asked for permission to name thegym after them, the Slatterys first humbly declined. “SoI asked them again to reconsider my request,” he said,“because the future of Catholic education depends on thededication and generosity of finding many more peoplelike Bill and Joan Slattery.” Mr. Hamburge said hebelieves that 100 years from now others need to beaware that people like Bill and Joan Slattery loved HolyFamily and Catholic education so much that theysupported the building of a new school—despite the factthat they might never have children or grandchildrenwho would attend the school. “Thankfully, for all ofCatholic education and for the future of Holy Family, this time they humbly accepted.”Bill Slattery addressed the auditorium filled withstudents and guests, recalling his own lessons learned ina Lasallian high school.“Some 50 years ago today I sat in a similar Convocationas a sophomore at South Hills Catholic High School in asuburb of Pittsburgh, PA. Like Holy Family, we were abrand new school and I was in the second class to startin that school. Most importantly,” he told students, “weare similar in the way my high school provided me andmy fellow classmates with a ‘Best In Class’education andinstilled in me the values that to this day affect the wayI live my life.”Speaking directly to the students, Mr. Slattery sharedhis love for this school and asked the students to supportHoly Family long after they have graduated. He toldthem that whenever he asks others to support HolyFamily through a monetary gift, he has always says thatthe students will support the school when they are in aposition to do so. “You and your fellow alumni representthe next generation of generous charitable givers. Youmight not have the capacity for a few years, what withcollege and other expenses, but I know that you willmake my assertion true some day.”16
