As The Land Conservancy celebrated its 30th
anniversary throughout the year in 2011, it gave
us a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon our many
accomplishments and develop lists of numbers to
highlight our achievements. Now, I will be the first to
admit that I love numbers and that working with The
Land Conservancy fuels this fire with virtually endless
lists (acres we preserved, plans we have completed,
dollars we have spent, dollars we have saved, etc., etc.)
But the numbers only tell a small part of The Land
Conservancy’s anniversary story.
The real story is the wonderful people that we have encountered and the exciting
new ideas they have brought to our efforts which, when coupled with their
enthusiasm, has motivated us to make great new conservation projects happen in
entirely new ways. These ordinary insights have allowed us to do extraordinary
things.
Some of these remarkable and unheralded people who have helped us make
a difference include people like Karl Wilder, who as The Conservancy’s first
volunteer, suggested that we begin working with towns because they needed
our help. Mildred Lillis convinced us to begin planning to develop a long-term
funding stream to care for the lands we own and whose bequest later helped us
start our Land Management Fund.
Bob Ivry who used his professional journalism experience to give us the original
design for our first newsletter. Peter Laue who was one of our early volunteers
at our new office, but continues to help us complete complex repairs, even after
he celebrated his 85th birthday. Leslie Sauer who, along with Emile DeVito,
taught us the basic ecological principles of land restoration that gave us the
confidence to take on the Rezamir project and complete it to a level we never
dreamed of.
People like Brian Powell, Marty Epstein, Bill Pettit and Tom Scudese who
have brought their considerable expertise to bear in helping us develop our new
Pedal for Preservation bicycling event that will kick off our next generation of
fundraising efforts for our second 30 years.
These are just a very few of the many people whose seemingly small
contributions have done so much to help The Conservancy further the cause
of conservation. There are, of course, hundreds of other people whose stories
we don’t tell, but whose help we truly appreciate. For all of the people who
have contributed to The Conservancy’s efforts in ways both large and small, we
dedicate this 30th anniversary annual report to you.

LAND PRESERVATION
The Land Conservancy of New Jersey is working to build
healthy, livable, sustainable communities through our land
preservation work. The impact of our efforts in 2011 can be seen in
the diversity of projects we completed that are helping to transform
our state.
Safeguarding land that buffers our rivers and streams to help filter
our water and provide safe, plentiful, and clean drinking water
South Branch Preserve
Mount Olive Township, Morris County
The Land Conservancy of New Jersey tripled the size the South
Branch Preserve in Mt. Olive Township in 2011. Working with the
New Jersey Water Supply Authority, Mount Olive Township, Morris
County Municipal Utilities Authority, Trout Unlimited, the Raritan
Headwaters Association and the State of New Jersey, the South
Branch Preserve is now 372 acres of land in the headwaters of the
South Branch of the Raritan River.
The South Branch Preserve is a great example of efforts to bring
together public and private organizations with different interests and
resources to preserve lands of regional and statewide significance.
The long term vision is to increase the South Branch Preserve
to 1,000 acres to serve as a showcase for watershed restoration;
community based organic farming and passive recreation including
fishing and hiking.
Located in Mt. Olive Township, Morris County, in the headwaters
of the South Branch of the Raritan River at Budd Lake, the South
Branch Preserve is a remarkable landscape containing diverse
wetlands, rich forests, tilled agricultural fields, and unique riparian
corridors and magnificent scenic views. The South Branch of the
Raritan River flows into the main stem of the Raritan River, one of
the state’s most critical water supply sources, that provides more
than 1.5 million New Jersey residents with drinking water. The
river is classified as a Category One waterway, and native wild
brook trout still live in the River. A keystone species, their presence
is an indicator of river and ecosystem health. Preserving these
sensitive sources of water is critical to not only trout and other
wildlife, but to every resident in every municipality that draws water
from this resource.
South Branch Preserve Addition I and II – 29 Acres
The forested 10-acre Able property was the second to be added to
the South Branch Preserve since it was established in June 2010
and was the 300th property preserved by The Land Conservancy.
Both the Able and the 19-acre Smith/Marra property immediately
adjoin The Land Conservancy’s South Branch Preserve
10-acre addition to the South Branch Preserve, Mount Olive Twp.
Restoration Site. The addition of the Able and Smith/Marra
properties to the Preserve is critical, as they lie upstream from the
restoration project, and could have posed significant threats to the
restoration effort if development had been allowed to occur here.
South Branch Preserve Addition III - 209 Acres
Approximately three quarters of a mile of the South Branch of the
Raritan River runs through the main portion of this 209-acre property.
Far reaching plans are being developed for managing and restoring
the former West King property (now known as the North Section of
the Preserve) to ensure it protects the South Branch of the Raritan
River and provides opportunities for public enjoyment.
The former West King Property - South Branch Preserve, Mount Olive Twp.
Perched above the South Branch of the Raritan River, this land
contains many small tributaries, springs and seeps that make up the
headwaters of the South Branch. Many species live in these forested
uplands, and breed in the ponds that are along the river corridor.
With the expanse of river captured by this acreage, preserving
these parcels is considered a high priority by the partnership
of organizations that has formed to establish the South Branch
Preserve.

Preserving forestland to help remove the pollutants in our air and
provide habitat for wildlife and plant life
Frelinghuysen Forest Preserve – 160 Acres
Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County
Once slated for development, the Frelinghuysen Forest Preserve
boasts a beautiful forest with small streams and an existing network
of trails leading back to a picturesque pond. Habitat for sensitive
species, springs, seeps and headwater streams make the land
valuable for natural resource protection. The property is easily
accessible from State Route 94 and Lincoln Laurel Road. The
Preserve will offer hiking trails, bird watching platforms, and will
be a classroom in nature for recreational hikers, school children and
scout groups.
Frelinghuysen Forest Preserve, Frelinghuysen Township
Preserving land in our low-lying communities to help protect
them from flooding
Pompton Riverwalk XIV, XV, and XVI - 0.75 Acres
Pequannock Township, Morris County
The Soldatenkov, Gidi and Weir properties are the final three
of six properties preserved in the fourth phase of the Pompton
Riverwalk project. The Pompton Riverwalk is a multi-phase project
which began in 2007. The Land Conservancy is working with the
Township of Pequannock in the development and expansion of this
Blueway program to provide flood protection for severely impacted
residences and private property, while creating new public recreation
opportunities in the community. Homes around the banks of the
Pompton River have long suffered from flooding. Rather than
continuing in the model of flood and rescue, Pequannock Township
officials and the Open Space Advisory Committee decided to pursue
a new strategy. This program targets the most flood prone homes
and streets in the municipality. The 16 lots that have been preserved
thus far have been subsequently cleared to provide flood storage
and a new community park has been created, locally known as the
Pompton Riverwalk. The Township and Conservancy are now
entering Phase V of the Riverwalk.
Expanding our public parks and recreation areas to provide
opportunities for all to enjoy the outdoors, play safely, and lead an
active and healthy lifestyle
Nosenzo Pond Park – 27 Acres
West Milford Township, Passaic County
After leasing the 27 acre park for several years, the Township
purchased Nosenzo Pond Park with assistance from The Land
Conservancy. Located near the intersection of Lower Starlight
Road and Nosenzo Pond Road, this new park provides an important
addition to the lands owned by West Milford for recreation and
conservation. In addition to preserving critical open space adjacent
to a body of water, owning the land will allow the Township
more freedom in deciding how this parkland will be used in the
future. The park is an ideal recreation area with several ball fields,
a playground for younger children, a pond for swimming and a
pavilion for outdoor events.
Stobaeus Park Expansion IV- 0.5 Acres
Florham Park Borough, Morris County
With land at a premium, the expansion of Stobaeus Park has been
Florham Park’s top open space priority. Measuring in at 7 acres,the
park is one of only three municipal parks in Florham Park. Though
Stobaeus Park is the Borough’s smallest park, it offers a diversity of
recreational opportunities, including a playground, a baseball field
and a hiking trail through the woods.
Weber Tract – 162 Acres
Kinnelon Borough, Morris County
The preservation of this property is the culmination of a multiyear
effort to protect this critically situated land in the New Jersey
Highlands. The Borough of Kinnelon now owns 100 acres of the
property and a 62-acre portion of the land was added to Morris
County’s 1,400 acre Silas Condict County Park. This site provides
habitat for a diverse collection of species on the federal and state
threatened and endangered species list and affords exceptional
views of the surrounding landscape. The land will become part of
the Pequannock River Greenway, an interconnected greenbelt that
extends north from the Silas Condict County Park into neighboring
West Milford Township.

Lodestar Park Expansion II – 47 Acres
Fredon Township, Sussex County
With the purchase of the former Marpol property, Fredon Township
has added 47 acres to Lodestar Park, enabling the Township to
expand the park’s trail network and enhance the recreational
activities available to local residents. The park is a center for
recreation and social gatherings in the Township.
Highlands Trail Project - 7 Acres
Byram Township, Sussex County
This 7-acre project consists of four small lots along the northern
edge of Lake Lackawanna. The proposed route for the Highlands
Trail runs across the property. Byram Township owns the adjoining
property and is working to preserve the properties to the north and
south in order to permanently and formally establish the Highlands
Trail.

Protecting our farmland to provide us with fresh, locally
grown food
Stewartsville Greenway - 38 Acres
Greenwich Township, Warren County
The Amey farm is part of a planned greenway that is intended
to help meet the regional goal of the New Jersey Department of
Transportation to preserve the rural nature of the Route 57 corridor
and the transitional land from Stewartsville to the surrounding
rural countryside. The proximity of the property to downtown
Stewartsville and the state highway made the threat of development
significant. The land will initially be used for agriculture while in
the future a hiking trail around the periphery of the farm fields will
be developed so the public can enjoy the rural qualities of the site.
Dumont Road Farm – 92 Acres
Greenwich Township, Warren County
This 92-acre farm is located in the Highlands Planning Area of
Greenwich Township. Preservation of this property will maintain
the rural and scenic character of the area, while protecting the soils
for future farming and food production. This is the last farm in
a commercial zone in Greenwich Township and is contiguous to
unrestricted farms.
Leavens Farm - 57 Acres
Franklin Township, Warren County
The 57-acre Leavens Farm is located in the village of Asbury,
Franklin Township. Part of the property hosts Apple Valley Farm,
an organic Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project. The
farm is located within Franklin Township’s Musconetcong Valley
Farmland Preservation Project Area, the Township’s highest priority
area for farmland preservation.
Santini Farm – 88 Acres
Franklin Township, Warren County
The 88-acre Santini Farm is part of a rich agricultural farmbelt near
Warren County’s southern border with Hunterdon County. The
Land Conservancy worked with the Warren County Freeholders to
preserve the property. Located along Willow Grove Road on the
southwestern slopes of Pohatcong Mountain, this farm has sweeping
views and is readily visible from the Pohatcong Valley. The farm
is located within the Pohatcong Ridge Project Area identified in the
Township’s Comprehensive Farmland Preservation Plan.
Ron Sigler, Sr. Farm – 20 Acres
Franklin Township, Warren County
The Land Conservancy worked with Franklin Township and Warren
County on the preservation of the 20-acre R. Sigler, Sr. Farm. The
farm is located in close proximity to other preserved farmland and
with the preservation of this farm, there is now a contiguous belt of
828 acres of preserved farmland stretching across Mountain View
Road in the heart of Franklin Township.

PARTNERS FOR GREENER
COMMUNITIES
Since 1995, through our Partners for Greener Communities
program, we have worked with 66 different governmental
and non-profit organizations in 11 counties protecting 13,632 acres
of stunning open space for recreation, conservation, and watershed
preservation. Our staff works hand-in-hand with committed,
dedicated local officials and volunteers to identify and purchase open
space and farmland. There has been a spectacular rise in the support
of “farm to table” markets, and our efforts to increase the amount of
farmland preserved in New Jersey has yield results that are making a
difference at local farmer markets and in grocery baskets. “Second
generation” use of public lands has led to a clamoring for easier and
greater access to preserved land with more people out on local trails
and more communities planning for outdoor recreation including
hiking and bicycling for their residents. The economy has had an
equal, if not greater, impact on conservation efforts. Leveraging
dollars and accessing new sources of funding has taken on a keener
focus and with our assistance, towns have achieved remarkable results
with more outside dollars supporting acquisition on a local level.
In terms of the numbers, this is what we have achieved in
2011 and in Partners for Greener Communities overall:

In 2011 we continued to negotiate prices that are below certified
market value. We continue to strengthen our partnerships with
private agencies and authorities, park agencies, governments, and
nonprofit organizations to ensure a broader spectrum of financial
resources for the future. Twenty-five percent of the funding which
was used to purchase the land this year was from sources outside
of the typical grants used for land transactions. Our planning work
also took on an innovative look at protection, expanding our reach
beyond preservation planning to documenting our street trees, our
groundwater, and our environment. Recreation took on an expanded
role, with numerous communities completing trail plans and
greenway studies to ensure that healthy lifestyle choices were easily
accessible to local neighborhoods and schools.
Some of our 2011 successes include:
• Worked with water purveyors to help accomplish their goal of
preserving drinking water quality. We continue to partner with the
New Jersey Water Supply Authority and Morris County Municipal
Utilities Authority to preserve vital drinking water resources,
expanding the South Branch Preserve in Mt. Olive Township.
Mark Taylor, Ken Roser, Blaine Rothauser, Anthony and
Andrew Lee, members of the Florham Park Environmental
Commission, attend an open space tour - a first step in
completing an updated Open Space and Recreation Plan.
• Morris County announced the development of a flood mitigation
program based on the successful model The Land Conservancy
has designed and put into place in Pequannock Township targeting
the most flood prone homes and streets in the municipality. By
the end of 2011, 16 lots that were acquired under this program
in Pequannock have been subsequently cleared to provide flood
storage. Through their preservation, a new community park has
been created, locally known as a “river walk” or “Blueway”.
• As part of Morristown’s sustainability initiative, The Land
Conservancy completed the Town’s inventory of urban street trees,
identifying the individual trees gracing the Township’s roads and
sidewalks. Each tree was catalogued using a handheld GPS unit
with information on the tree’s health, location, and appearance.
As a result, the establishment of a Shade Tree Commission has
been approved, to work hand in hand with the Department of
Engineering, Office of Sustainability, and Department of Public
Works, to ensure the future health and viability of Morristown’s
street trees.

PARTNERS FOR PARKS EDUCATION
The Land Conservancy of New Jersey has been steadfast in its commitment
to help maintain and improve parkland and historic sites throughout the state
through our Partners for Parks Program. Partners for Parks is The Conservancy’s
corporate volunteer stewardship program, established to help fill the gap between
the parks’ needs and the resources available to them. While helping the parks
complete projects, volunteers experience a “hands-on” opportunity to learn how to
care for the land while enjoying a team-building experience with their colleagues.
The Conservancy’s Partners for Parks Program benefits all concerned.
In 2011 Partners for Parks arranged stewardship projects for 20 corporate
volunteer groups throughout the northern part of the state with the help of 351
volunteers. Our partners for 2011 were Goldman, Sachs & Co., GlaxoSmithKline,
Investors Bank, Merck & Co., BASF, Pfizer, Bristol Myers-Squibb, Timberland,
UPS, Prudential, NJ Nets, Mars, Toyota and Lexus.
Since 1996 Partners for Parks has completed 489 projects throughout 10 New
Jersey counties with the help of 8,005 volunteers! Seen below are examples of

The 2011 Scholarship Program
Steven Sheets of Rockaway was awarded the 2011 Rogers
Family Scholarship and Brian Curry of North Brunswick
was awarded the 2011 Russell W. Myers Scholarship. The
Conservancy grants two awards yearly to outstanding New Jersey
college students studying in an environmental field. Each student
received $7,750. Since 1984, $163,500 has been awarded to 42
deserving college students by the Conservancy, helping to develop
New Jersey’s future environmental leaders.
Steven Sheets is a junior at Delaware Valley College where he is
pursuing a degree in Environmental Science. Steven spent last
summer working at Picatinny Arsenal conducting research into
advanced wastewater treatment technologies. During the school
year he works as both a resident assistant and a student tutor at
Delaware Valley College.
Brian Curry is a senior at Rutgers, The State University of New
Jersey, studying Environmental Planning and Design. Brian has
been working on a self-initiated project to create a wildlife program
at Davidson Mill Pond Park in South Brunswick. The program
aims to integrate technology and nature to teach local children
about the importance of conservation and sustainable living through
experimental learning in an outdoor classroom.
The Russell W. Myers Scholarship was established in 1983 to honor
the Conservancy’s founder. The late Mr. Myers was the first director
of the Morris County Park Commission. The Rogers Family
Scholarship was established in 2005 by Gray and Mollie Rogers,
dedicated conservationists who wanted to expand the Conservancy’s
educational support for outstanding conservation-minded New
Jersey college students.

Interns Help Conservancy Achieve its Goals
The Land Conservancy prides itself on the high quality, high caliber
student interns who work with our staff on planning, acquisition
and stewardship projects. This year has been no exception. Since
2000 we have hired 55 interns, from a myriad of institutions and a
diversity of majors, all with an enthusiasm for the outdoors and land
conservation.

In 2011 The Land Conservancy recognized Rutgers University
Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy on its 20th
Anniversary. We hired our first Bloustein intern in 2005 and since
then have hired 14 Bloustein students and graduates as interns,
consultants, and staff. They have achieved remarkable results:
Between 2005 and 2011 Bloustein students have helped complete
30 plans directly resulting in the preservation of 1,454 acres and the
receipt of $45 million in grant funds.

Christine Bell was named the 2011 recipient of our Richard
M. Sargent, Jr. Internship, established in memory of former
Conservancy Trustee Dick Sargent. Christine joined our staff at
the beginning of her second year at the Bloustein School. An
independent worker and strong researcher, Christine’s writing
expertise and close attention to
detail benefitted many of our local
community partners through her
work on their planning documents
and grant applications. The

M. Sargent, Jr. Internship to
highly accomplished and talented
college students providing them

1981 The Land
Conservancy of
New Jersey was
“born” when New
Jersey’s Secretary
of State signed the incorporation
papers that created the Morris
County Parks and Conservation
Foundation. The brainchild of
Russell W. Meyers, the first
director of the Morris County Park
Commission, the organization
was conceived to assist the Park
Commission in accomplishing its
mission and to ensure that his life’s
work would continue after he was
gone.
1983 The Russell W. Myers
Scholarship, the Conservancy’s longest
continuously running program, was
established, laying the foundation
for our Scholarship Program. The
Conservancy provides annual awards
to New Jersey college students
pursuing careers in environmental
preservation.
CeLebraTing 30 years of Land PreservaTion
1991 As its activities increased, the Morris
County Parks and Conservation Foundation changed
its name to Morris Parks and Land Conservancy. The
first issue of our Newsletter
was published featuring a
tribute to recently deceased
founder; Russell W. Myers.
1995 Randolph Township
became the first town to
retain Morris Parks and Land
Conservancy as its Open Space
Advisor. Our Partners for
Greener Communities program
grew from this early effort to
forge partnerships with the
towns to preserve open space.
1997 We completed our first land
acquisition project, purchasing the development
rights on a 100-acre farm in Washington
Township from Anthony Araneo and
simultaneously transferring these rights to the
Morris County Agriculture Development Board.

2010 The Land Conservancy of
New Jersey partnered with Mount Olive
Township, Morris County, the State of
New Jersey, and The Trust for Public Land
to preserve the 135-acre Rezamir Estates
property. Preserving this site was critical
because it lies within the headwaters
of the South Branch of the Raritan
River, a drinking water source for more
than 1.5 million New Jersey residents.
Following the closing the Conservancy
took ownership of the property and began
work to restore the land to its natural state.
We completed the first restoration of a
residential subdivision ever accomplished
in New Jersey!

1994 The Conservancy hired
its first permanent staff, David
Epstein became the first full time
Executive Director and still leads
the organization to this day.
1996 Eight volunteers from the Florham Park office of the Prudential
Insurance Company of America improved the landscaping in Jefferson’s popular
Children’s Park. This volunteer project launched
the Conservancy’s award winning Partners for Parks
Program that continues to put volunteer teams to
work on one day projects to beautify and maintain our
region’s magnificent parks.
1999 Morris Parks and
Land Conservancy changed
its name to Morris Land
Conservancy. We preserved
our 1,000th acre, as a result
of projects in Randolph, West
Milford, Pequannock, Madison,
Mt. Olive and Kinnelon.

Land Conservancy changed our
name to The Land Conservancy
of New Jersey.
2006 The Rogers Family
Scholarship was established
greatly expanding the impact
of our Scholarship Program.
Since then we have awarded two
scholarships annually to New
Jersey college students.
2005 We preserved our
10,000th acre highlighted by the
852-acre Culvermere property
in Sussex County added to the Bear Swamp Wildlife Management Area;
the 525-acre Koehler Estate property, added to the Wildcat Ridge Wildlife
Management Area; and the 1,200-acre Lam property in Kinnelon added to
the Morris County Park System. The Conservancy was honored to receive
the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Take Pride in America award and the
N.J. Department of Environmental Protection’s Environmental Excellence
Award for Land Conservation.

“ Congratulations to The Land Conservancy!
It has been a pleasure working with The Land
Conservancy for more than a decade. That
partnership has been a very successful one
by any measure. With the able assistance of
The Land Conservancy the Borough has been
awarded $11,325,500 in grant funds since 2000.
Thanks to The Land Conservancy’s expertise, the
Borough has also preserved 154 acres of pristine
woodlands, meadows and an historic farm, and is
working on additional open space and farmland
preservation projects. The Land Conservancy did
a masterful job of updating the Borough’s Open
Space and Recreation Plan in March of this
year, and worked extremely well on these projects
with many of our committees. We look forward to
working with you for many years.
