Our research and developmentteams are focusing on high-impact initiatives aswell as process-improvement efforts designed tomaximize everything from “idea generation” to“commercialization” of new products. This year welaunched a number of new label products, safetydevices, printers and software, all designed tomake the job — from identifying and tracking, tosafely repairing and maintaining — more efficient, effective and easier to do.New label products include thinner, lighter labelsfor meeting the extreme challenges of printedcircuit-boardmanufacturing; and a new line oflow-level security labels that provide the idealdeterrent to product theft, warranty-relatedtampering and product fraud.Web-to-WorkbenchWith Brady’s Web-to-Workbench technology, customproductorders move seamlessly from the customer toBrady’s manufacturing floor.BRADY CORPORATIONWe are also meeting the challenge of servingcustomers from many European countrieselectronically with a multi-lingual Web sitelaunched this year at www.bradyeurope.com. Theadvanced programming behind this siteautomatically selects the language specified bythe user’s browser. Customers can access countryspecifictechnical support and customer-serviceinformation in predominant European languages(English, French, German, Dutch). The site alsofeatures downloadable product information andsoftware customized for the language selected.Other e-business initiatives this year includedcustomized Web interfaces for some of our keycustomers, enhanced “virtual” learning to ensureemployees have the most up-to-date tools andskills needed in today’s competitive marketplace, and a more robust investor-relations area of ourWeb site at www.investor.bradycorp.com.These efforts are all part of a multi-faceted,comprehensive and innovative e-business strategydesigned to help the company utilize the InternetNew ProductsOnly 1 mil thick, Brady’s new EDS labels are idealfor sensitive electronics applications wherereducing overall product weight is critical.New safety products range from the Brady EZPanel Loc circuit breaker lock-out system to acomplete line of safety signage products compliantwith new federal standards for size, shape, reflectivity and color. We also expanded our printer offerings with a newBradyprinter model that offers 600 dpiresolutions for labels as small as one-eighth-inchhigh; and the next generation of our popular lineof TLS 2200 ® printers, now with the capability towork as both a desktop or portable printer.6

The materials are particularlyattractive to automotive electronics manufacturers,as an increasing portion of an auto’s bill ofmaterials is comprised of electronics. We expanded our software offerings with theacquisition of Eset, GmbH in July 2001. Eset hasdeveloped nearly 200 Windows ® printer drivers inconjunction with its label-design software whichwill allow us to offer customers products that addeven more value to their identification systems.*Eset’s signature product, “Label and Form”software, is produced in German, French, Swedishand English, and is capable of printing directlyfrom SAP and other enterprise-resource-planningsystems without customization. We continue to look for acquisitions that expandour geographic and market reach, or bring newtechnologies to ensure Brady continues to be onthe forefront in our markets.software; and new Brady Lockout-PROGraphical Procedure Writing Software, a turnkeyprogram for building an OSHA-compliant lockouttagoutprogram. You can read more about all of our new productson our Web site at www.bradycorp.com.ACQUISITIONSWe made two acquisitions this year, both inGermany. In March 2001, we acquired BalkhausenGmbH, a manufacturer of precision die-cut partsand specialty materials. Balkhausen hasdeveloped a unique material and applicationsolution to dissipate heat from electroniccomponents, and provides us new developmentopportunities for specialty thermal-managementmaterials. With electronicsbecoming more and morepowerful, there is atremendous amount of heatconcentrated in smaller andsmaller areas, shortening thelifespan of electroniccomponents. Balkhausen’smaterial/technologycombination helps to removethe heat from isolated areasand effectively transfer itaway from the devices byusing heat sinks — pieces ofprecision-cut copper oraluminum attached to printedBalkhausenHeat-sink technology, a Balkhausen specialty, extends the lifespan of small electronicscomponents.MARKET-DRIVEN GROWTHMarket-driven growth for Brady has taken adecidedly international focus this year.Recognizing the potential for growth in EasternEurope, we recently opened our first sales officesin Hungary and Poland.Brazil is providing us opportunities to grow ourbusiness with multinational companies there.
