Kaiako for <strong>the</strong> National Certifica<strong>te</strong> in Computing<br />

Level 2 & Level 3<br />

Waana Reihana used to clean cars, wash dishes<br />

and cook at Whangarei Hospital just to earn enough<br />

money to help raise her family. As a result of many<br />

years working in laborious jobs she had to stop<br />

working when she sustained an injury. Waana<br />

needed to go out and find something else she could<br />

do and that realisation was not easy to come to <strong>te</strong>rms<br />

with, especially at <strong>the</strong> age of 50.<br />

She con<strong>te</strong>mpla<strong>te</strong>d different career options but <strong>the</strong><br />

one that stuck in her head was computing. Waana<br />

had some basic computing skills and thought she<br />

could use <strong>the</strong>se skills to get a job. Unfortuna<strong>te</strong>ly, not<br />

having a tohu (certifica<strong>te</strong>) to say she had <strong>the</strong> skills<br />

The need for computing skills is increasing both here<br />

and overseas due to <strong>the</strong> growing use of compu<strong>te</strong>rs<br />

in most industries. This introductory programme<br />

is designed to kick-start your career in computing,<br />

administration and o<strong>the</strong>r industries by providing you<br />

with basic skills in compu<strong>te</strong>r hardware and software,<br />

email and office applications.<br />

computing. ’It was so worth all <strong>the</strong> hard work and<br />

Waana star<strong>te</strong>d work at Te Wānanga o Ao<strong>te</strong>aroa<br />

as a kaiako (tutor) for <strong>the</strong> Certifica<strong>te</strong> in Computing<br />

Level 2 in 2007 when computing was first delivered<br />

in Whangarei. ‘I now pass on what I know; I’ve<br />

witnessed ākonga (students) become compu<strong>te</strong>r<br />

li<strong>te</strong>ra<strong>te</strong> and pathway to bigger things. But <strong>the</strong><br />

grea<strong>te</strong>st reward is watching <strong>the</strong>m grow as people,<br />

become confident, empowered, and <strong>the</strong>n taking<br />

what <strong>the</strong>y have learnt back to <strong>the</strong>ir whānau’.<br />

how to use <strong>the</strong> la<strong>te</strong>st <strong>te</strong>chnologies and software in<br />

<strong>the</strong> real world.<br />
