Te Tai Tokerau, Whangarei
Waana Reihana used to clean cars, wash dishes
and cook at Whangarei Hospital just to earn enough
money to help raise her family. As a result of many
years working in laborious jobs she had to stop
working when she sustained an injury. Waana
needed to go out and find something else she could
do and that realisation was not easy to come to terms
with, especially at the age of 50.
She contemplated different career options but the
one that stuck in her head was computing. Waana
had some basic computing skills and thought she
could use these skills to get a job. Unfortunately, not
having a tohu (certificate) to say she had the skills
