large 8vo
good condition without the damage
that usually bedevils this set
and another similar set also lavishly
illustrated ♦ BROWN, HAROLD -
554 Godfrey, Denis
THE DENIS GODFREy COLLECTION
n.p.
The collection comprises of
approximately 160 original
Anglo-Boer War photographs
22 by 28cm
loose leaf holder with plastic
‘pocketed’ pages to hold the
collection of photographs mostly
14cm by 9cm some larger (½ plate
to full plate) some ¼ plate, with
identification list, no doubt typed
by Godfrey. Although the photos
are unnumbered it is quite easy to
match captions to photographs,
mostly this is unnecessary as
a large number have captions
written on the back that date from
the Anglo-Boer War. The album
contains photos that Godfrey
assembled individually as well
as from two period collections.
Photographs include a series
showing 6 of Boer and British dead
at Spion Kop, Gideon Scheepers
in hospital, Military Governor
and his staff at Bloemfontein in
their office, CIV, British prisoners
arriving at the Staats Model School,
monuments etc.
OF 1900
New York: The Judge Company,
1900
first edition
b/w illustrations. The focus of the
first volume of this rare American
Publication is on the Anglo-Boer
War, whereas the emphasis of the
second shifts to the Boxer Rebellion
in China. The completeness of the
run of numbers is not confirmed
as outer covers of individual
magazines were not included in the
binding
31 by 43cm
skivertex covers with fitted spine
with applied blue and silver printed
by a copy of his application for the
medal issued in 1 Nov 1948. The
under Alberts and that he served for
the duration of the war including the
besieging of Ladysmith, Platrand,
Modder River, Boesman Kop,
Heidelberg, Bakenlaagte and Bethal.
The medal was claimed by van
5,2 by 2,4 by 4,2cm
A skilfully crafted slipcase with two
books carved out of green stone. See
Note with Lot 563 on the previous
history of J.C. van der Merwe. On
spines of books “Dagboeken van
myn gevangenschap”. The sides
of the slipcase have the following
inscriptions “J.C. v.d. Merwe,
Lokale Tronk, Pretoria 10 Mei 1915”,
“Gevangen 29-10-1914, Lichtenburg
Dist”, “Ter Aan denken, aan de
Rebellie 1914 en ‘15”
and two others also of 1914 Rebellion
and Anglo-Boer War interest ♦ A
UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA COAT OF
ARMS
circa 1914-1915
14,5 by 10,5cm
Carved stone plaque with the
inscription “Aan W. Jansen van J.C.
v.d. Merwe No. 2175 Rebellie 1914
en 1915 G.J.C. Snijman 3037” Here
van der Merwe has added the name
of Snijman, a fellow prisoner, as the
gift of the plaque was from both of
them. ‘Ouma Jan’ (W. Jansen) was
the old lady who gave the plaques and
Rebellion souvenirs to the vendor in
Pretoria circa 1955/56. The reverse has
an interesting deeply carved cartouche
of two reclining buck, probably meant
to portray a duiker or springbok and the
inscription “Gedachtenis van de lokale
Gevangenis Re Pretoria”
See note about the previous history
of J.C. van der Merwe in Notes of
Lot 563.
It is of exceptional interest that
van der Merwe should choose to
carve a detailed coat of arms of
the Union of South Africa which
represented the Government
that had captured van der Merwe
and imprisoned him during the
1914/15 Rebellion.
circa 1914-1915
stone plaque with Rebellion and
Anglo-Boer War connections
10,5 by 7,4cm
carved by “J.C. van der Merwe
No. 2175”, the latter inscription and
“Lokale Gevangenis Pretoria Rebellie
1914-1915” on the obverse with “27
April 1915” on the reverse of the
stone slab
It is interesting to note that the “Anglo-
Boere Oorlog Medalje Rol” by D.R.
Forsyth records three J.C. van der
Merwe’s, all of whom were prisoners
of war. They would have been exposed
to the making of souvenirs while in
P.O.W. camps. Now in 1914 van der
Merwe found himself a prisoner of
war once again and practised his art
CAFFRE - PLATE 14
Who J. W. was remains an enigma. In 1851 the London firm of W. Robert & Lowes
Dickinson published ‘The Caffre Tribes: Sketches of some of the various classes
and tribes inhabiting the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope and the Interior of
Southern Africa, with a brief account Descriptive of the Manners and Customs of
Each’. The 41 plates were by ‘J. W.’, Dickinson states that ‘J. W.’, the artist, was a
talented gentleman many years resident at the Cape. Research by A Gordon-Brown
suggests that the identity of ‘J. W.’ was J. White - see Africana Notes and News -
Vol 20 P17-19. ‘J. W.’ and also A. Gordon-Brown - Pictorial Africana, 1975 ‘J.W.’ in
any event was a Cape Civil servant who made these sketches/watercolours and
sold them to visitors to the Cape in the 1840’s. His watercolours, unacknowledged,
were used in several publications in the mid 1800’s. ‘J. W.’ numbered his
watercolours.
NEWCASTLE ON A PONTOON BRIDGE MADE OF BEER
BARRELS
n.p. May 1881
a most unusual detailed original pencil sketch showing the
British army on campaign. Most of Prior’s works depict the
2nd Anglo-Boer War not the first.
43 by 27cm
framed, centre fold of sketch pad visible, a few white
marks at edge of paper without affecting the sketch,
slightly age darkened
Melton Prior (1845-1910) was special artist for the
Illustrated London News - over 300 illustrations related to
South Africa appear in that publication. He went to South
Africa on five separate occasions besides the Anglo-Boer
War, The Last Kaffir War of 1878, The Zulu War 1879, The
Transvaal (Anglo-Boer) War of 1881 and the Jameson Raid
of 1895-6. He wrote an account of his experiences in SA
in ‘Campaigns of a War Correspondent’. See Greenwall
‘Artists and Illustrators of the Anglo-Boer War’ for a
comprehensive biography p. 188-190. Prior can be rated
as the most famous was correspondent and illustrator of
the last ¼ of the 19th century - particularly of the Anglo-
Boer War.
two original character studies in pencil during the Anglo-
Boer War on the Highveld of the Transvaal 1900. Greenwall
has titled these ‘On the Highveldt 1 & 2’. The artist has
called the first ‘On the Highveldt’ and the second ‘On Trek
with Ox Wagon’. Along the way, during the monotony of
accompanying a wagon column, Wollen saw fit to capture
on paper these two Boers he encountered.
31 by 34cm
appropriately framed: each signed by artist William B.
Wollen was a special artist, military painter and illustrator
and worked for publications - The Illustrated London News,
The Graphic and The Sphere. He covered the movements
of Lord Metheun on the western front of the Cape
Colony and thereafter with Lord Roberts. Wollen was
part of the production team of ‘The Friend’ newspaper in
Bloemfontein and his work was lavishly praised in Carter’s
Book ‘The Work of the War Artists in South Africa’ (also see
