Anu Leenu Uustalu - The ‘Art’ of Giving Anu Leenu Uustalu was born September 22nd, 1914 in Tallinn, Estonia. When she was just 4 years old, the Independence Manifesto of 1918 was proclaimed in Tallinn, with the unforeseen side effects of immediate German occupation and a war with Russia. In 1920, Tallinn-life.com reports a peace treaty with Russia was signed, “whereby Russia acknowledged their momentary boredom with the whole pursuit and patted the back of the new Estonian Republic.” Young Anu was a talented artist and studied at the Pallas Art School. She once said, “I paint because I have to paint, because God created me with the desire to do just that!” With the outbreak of World War II, a coup overseen by the Red Army led to Estonia being annexed by the USSR before the invasion by Nazi Germany in 1941. The most terrible night of her life came during one of these invasions. She told us soldiers came into town in the middle of the night and took all the men and boys. It was the last time she ever saw her father or brothers and she was never able to learn their fates. “The women and girls were allowed to run off into the fields and hide,” she recalled. She eventually made her way to Germany where she lived in a Displaced Workers Camp near Nuremberg. After the retreat of the Nazis in 1944, the Soviets moved in and occupied Estonia for the next 47 years. Estonia was smothered beneath the Iron Curtain until the unprecedented Estonian Singing Revolution united the country, the Soviet Union eventually fell, an independent democratic Estonian state was re-established in 1991. Estonia now is part of the European Union. Anu left Germany in 1949 and came the U.S. to continue her artwork. Perhaps because of her difficult time in the 1940’s, Anu once said, “I create imaginary or visionary human beings... I tend to forward some psychological, philosophical or social statements which can be pleasant or unpleasant.” Her art is featured in several museums and the Estonia Art Museum calls her works (like the one shown on this page), “Masterpieces.” Anu enjoyed living at San Camillo. She would chuckle and smile in reply to those who asked how she was. “Ah,” she would say, “More or less!” Another “art” she mastered was the art of giving. During her lifetime, she made plans to give back to St. Camillus when she passed away. Anu named the “Order of St. Camillus Foundation, Inc” (our legal name) in her Will as a beneficiary of 15% of her estate. She passed away in 2011and is missed by her friends at San Camillo. The arts she learned will be her legacy. You can make a big difference just as Anu did... even if you can’t paint! A simple bequest in your Will or trust will make a big difference to the seniors we serve. You also can list us as a beneficiary of your IRA, bank accounts, mutual funds, annuities or life insurance. Simply call your agents and tell them you'd like to make the change to include the "Order of St. Camillus Foundation, Inc." as a beneficiary.
