Vermont Farmstead Cheese Companycontinued from page NE6Today’s Holstein herd boasts a BAA of 108.1%and includes members of the Adeen, Paradise,Spirit Logan, R-Maple Lulu and Dark-Horse MDaphne families, as well as other homebred familiescarrying the Gladtime-West prefix. Cows arefed a simple dry-hay based diet supplementedwith grain, which Kent says lends to great cowhealth and consistent quality milk.Keys to success for VFCC are obviously productand community involvement. VFCC offers avariety of cheeses including a havarti style, edamstyle, a farmstead cheddar and a twist on brie.Their cheesemakers have wasted no time in capturingpublic approval and as recently as January2012, the Governor of Vermont recognizedVFCC during his “State of the State” addressas “one of several agricultural businesses thatare creating jobs and adding vitality to a dairyindustry that is poised for revitalization.” VFCCcheeses were also advertised in “The VermontCountry Store 2011 holiday catalog” which isabsolutely a treat to look through!Community involvement is obviously a hugefactor in the success of VFCC. Connected totheir customers through Facebook, Twitter, awebsite (http://vermontfarmstead.com/) and amonthly “Curds and Whey” newsletter, the teamreaches not only local customers, but out of stateones as well. Their increased visibility and saleshave prompted an expansion phase that will openin June of this year in Windsor, Vermont. To learn even more about how VFCC connectswith its customers and to get an in-depthlook at the cows and Kent’s passion for breedingRegistered Holsteins, read the rest of the storyonline at http://www.holsteinworld.com/magazines.php.And be sure to check out their ad inthis issue on page NE7.Kent Underwood, a fifth generation dairyman, is the Chief Operating Officer and investor ofVermont Farmstead Cheese. Junior MerchandisingLife Lessons from Edith! My mom and dad returned fromCanada one day 10 years agowith a beautiful black heifer calf. They had seen her at a show where she was the5th place winter calf, and caught their eye, andwith the help of our good friend Jocelyn Cote,we purchased this all black Juror out of an EXStardust. She became my first Holstein, and continuesto provide mewith healthy heifercalves. Her name isBuroco Juror Edith.Over the years, I havebeen able to forman unexplainablebond with her. Byno means would Iconsider her a naturalshow cow, I had touse all my might asa little 7 year old tohold her head up, andshe enjoyed makingme struggle! But eventuallyI grew strong enough to over come thisand she leads perfectly for me, and only me. Noone else seemed to be able to get her to cooperate. This special bond has never waivered. WhenI was younger, I would go to the barn and talk toher; and she would listen. I have fond memoriesof falling asleep next to her at shows, and herfollowing me through the pasture, when shewould run from other people. One of the scariestmoments I can remember is when we were flushingher and she developed a blood clot in herspine. She lost movement in her rear legs, and wewere unsure if she was going to live. For severaldays she couldn’t get up. I remember visiting herand seeing her eyes brighten and ears perk upwhen she heard my voice. I begged her to keepmoving and eating, and with acupuncture, someherbal tea, and the incredible care of Sue Brown, she amazed us all. Against all odds she survivedand is back to her old self.Luckily, Edith has been very successful atshows. We usually sell most of our heifers beforethey calve, but Edith was an exception. She wasRes. Junior Champion in Louisville as a winteryearling, Grand Champion of the Junior Showat Eastern States as a Sr. 2, 4-year-old, and agedcow. She was also HHM Jr. All-American WinterYearling, and nominated Jr. All-American as a Sr.3-year-old and 4-year-old.Edith is currently scored EX-94 3E and willcome back out for the shows this fall. Her firstdaughter followed her lead and was Res. Jr.All-American and nominated All-American as awinter yearling, Res. OtherEdith daughters,Damion Eclipse(VG-87), TitanElephant andDurham Eternity(VG-85), havealso been nominatedJr. All-American.This past year,Edith’s greatgranddaughter,Pyramid Lucifer Eeyor was 2ndsummer yearling in the Junior Show at WorldDairy Expo and Res. Jr. All-American. We haveflushed her very successfully, now having 10 ETheifers out of her. I have begun to struggle withthinking of names that start with E! We havebred her to Astronomical, Damion, Dundee,Destry, Durham, and the calves have been justas black and stunning as she is. She is currentlyliving happily in a boxstall as a spoiled old cowat Lylehaven Farms in East Montpelier. She looksjust as good as always after calving in Decemberwith an adorable Destry heifer, her 6th calf.Edith loves to go to the shows and my favoritetimes to be with her are at the shows.Working with Edith and all the experiencesI have shared with her have provided me withvaluable knowledge. Being my first animal, shehas been the inspiration for my passion of animals. This passion has inspired me to wish tobe a large animal vet, and I am entering collegewith that ambition. Also, attending shows hasgiving me the opportunity to see some amazingcows, such as Missy, Apple, Hazel, and Veronica. The amount of time I have spent at shows withher, I have learned how to judge cows and pickout quality animals. When I’m looking for cowsBy Chelsea Abbott, special for HolsteinWorldI like, I have to admit I typically lean towardsthose that are mostly black, probably because ofthe influence Edith has had on me. Look Who’s Back!Juniper – The SequelSeventeen year old GeorgeLiberty isn’t backing down fromthe task at hand. It’s not in his vocabularyto shy away from a challenge. Instead, he’s usinghis youthful open mind, his wide array of mentorsand his years of family business training totake the reins of Juniper Holsteins and continuea long-standing New England tradition.Juniper has been in the Liberty family since1983, when George’s father, Michael, purchasedthe facility in Gray, Maine. Michael worked withhis friend Mike Wilson (of Wilsondale) to buycows and build a herd with the goal of developinga “world-class milking facility and embryotransfer/breeding facility,” according to George. In its heyday, Juniper was a major player, workingwith cattle valued in the millions of dollarsrange and exporting thousands of embryosworldwide. One of the most well-known bulls tobe produced during this time was Juniper RotateJed, who was purchased and distributed byLandmark (Alta) Genetics. The tax reform actthat significantly impacted most investor herds inthe 80s also changed the makeup of Juniper andbecause investing in cows didn’t quite carry thetax benefits that it had before, Juniper was sizeddown and eventually the herd was dispersed in1991. Remaining vacant for much of the 90s,Juniper reopened its doors in 1999 when MichaelLiberty partnered up with another friend, Dr.Richard “Whit” Whitaker. Whit managed thedairy, along with his successful embryo transferpractice, until 2009. And that’s when the doorsopened for George.Although just 14 years of age, George hadbeen surrounded by business-saavy family membershis whole life, so taking over a dairy wasn’tdaunting to the then 14-year-old. “I expresseda keen interest to dad showing that I wanted tolearn the business and take over this great place.August 16, 2011 was the arrival of the first of ournew foundation herd, and a dream come true!”Mind you, George doesn’t come from a familyof “just getting by” people. His father was nominatedin 1985 by President Ronald Regan as oneof the “Most Outstanding Men in America,” andhe’s been involved with industries besides agricultureincluding aerospace & defense, aviation, real estate, energy, education and more. George’smother is in charge of all the bookwork for thefarm. Adriana, a sister, has worked as a volunteerwith “Projects Abroad” educating childrenin an orphanage in Ehtiopia. She’s currently incollege and still very much involved in charitywork and with the Liberty Family Foundation.George’s 15-year-old brother, Max, is investingin a record-label in Los Angeles, and follows hisfather’s interest in the entertainment industry. The list goes on, but you can see that personaldrive and motivation is bred right in. And inreturn, the entire family is happy to have cowsback in the barns and is very supportive of therejuvenation of Juniper.Besides family influence, George credits mentorslike Whit and Mike Wilson for teachinghim so much. “They both have tremendousknowledge and experience with cows and thebusiness. I realized when I wanted to take overBy Karen Knutsenthe process would be tough…but easier withgreat help. I hope college helps me learn a lotmore, but I have a feeling I won’t learn nearlyas much as I have from these guys in real life!”George says he also gets inspiration from watchingother breeders develop great herds of influentialcows and industry leading show strings. Hesaid he admires what breeders like Sandy Valleyand Butlerview have done and hopes that in fiveyears, Juniper is working towards developingthose same types of cows. He doesn’t want toput all his eggs in one basket though, and agreesthat developing genomic leaders and show cowsis tough, but diversity is good.On the 130-acre farm today, you’ll find a herdof 40 cows, with 34 in tiestalls and the remainingsix elite cows in boxstalls. The herd is fed50 pounds of corn silage daily, an 18% pelletand a dry grass hay. There’s also a heifer facilitythat houses 30 heifers & calves, as well ashutches which will soon be full after many calvein March. “The goal is to have leading geneticsthat create the basis for nationwide relationships,”said George. “We breed for type, dairyness andbig, deep-bodied cows. We play the genomicgame a little with the small group we have, butfor the most part, we go for the big-pedigreed,elite animals.”George gives lots of credit to his herdsmen,Tim and Dan Putnam. “The two arebrothers and work together superbly. Theyhave grown-up in the business and bothhave worked for top, top people nationwide. To be able to walk in everyday and havea great time with not just employees, butpeople you can call friends, is an unparalleledfeeling. The cows look ready to hitthe showring and everyone is happy andcomfortable.” George says that was one ofthe hardest things about “coming back” tothe industry, was finding good help. But “tofind two people who have the same desireas our family does andwho could make the placethrive is fantastic. Wehave expectations that aresimple, but important.”Get to know Georgeeven better by followingthe continuing story onlineat http://www.holsteinworld.com/magazines.php.And be sure to check outthe Juniper Holsteins adin this issue on page 11 inthe New England Annual!28 March 2012 NEW ENGLAND HOLSTEIN ANNUAL • HOLSTEINWORLDwww.holsteinworld.com
