Do any of you hike with your BoykinSpaniel? My husband Greg and I are avidhikers, and we love bringing Otis with uson the trails. Boykins are incredible hikers!Since this quarterly celebrates allthat you can do with your Boykin Spaniel,I thought I’d write how Otis did on ourhikes this summer on Mt Desert Island inMaine. Once you figure out and respectyour Boykin’s hiking needs and limitations,you’re in for a heck of a treat!This summer, we rented a seaside cottageon the island for a week, and hikedthe many trails in the nearby Acadia NationalForest. Before choosing hikes, wepurchased a hiking map that specificallygrades the trails as Difficult, Moderate,and Easy, and includes a detailed description.Otis is extremely sure-footed andcapable of jumping onto a boulder thatis slightly taller than he is—as long as hehas enough clearance or space in whichto build momentum. So we ruled out theDifficult trails because they can be toosteep for Otis to scale. We also ruled outa couple of Moderate hikes because theyincluded a few sections with iron rungs—again, out of Otis’ hiking range. The halfdayhikes we chose were limited to elevationsof around 1300 ft, with a good partof those trails being inside the shady treelines. The hikes that consist primarily ofrocky ridge trails afford incredible vistas.But they can be much hotter in the summerand require that you carry a heavierload of water. So for Otis’ comfort and thehealth of our backs, we chose hikes withBOYKIN SPANIELS FOREVEROtis the Boykin Spanielby Magda Fernandezbrief but nevertheless glorious summits.Greg and I always carry water and trailmix on long hikes for the often-neededenergy boost. Otis exerts just as muchenergy as, if not more than, we do on thetrails. So we carry lots of water for him aswell, along with dried venison treats--hisfavorite. To reduce his chances of gettinggiardia, I feed him water frequently to discouragehim from drinking in the woodedstreams. Dunking in the streams, however,is great because it keeps him coolduring the climb. Besides, try keeping aBoykin out of a running stream! I alsofind that Otis’ Easy Walk harness, withthe ring on his back instead of his chest,provides a mighty convenient handle forsafely heaving him over any tricky partsof the trail.To see Otis hike those mountains is towitness the famous Boykin Spaniel endurance.He really can go at it all day!Greg and I can take larger steps forwardand upward, but Otis keeps apace with usor takes the lead at times. He truly is acompanion dog and prefers to stay withinour sight. One of the interesting challengesof hiking is assessing the most efficientand safe places to place your feet as youclimb. Sometimes it’s not obvious, andyou have to figure it out before proceeding.I’ve watched Otis make his choices,and I’m amazed at how intelligent theyare. Many times, he’s shown me betterchoices that I hadn’t even considered!Watching Otis sniff and mark along theway also revealed to me traces of the elusivemountain wildlife that you rarely getto see.Sargent Mountain PondAfter each hike, we rewarded Otis with aswim off the low granite ledges of beautifulEcho Lake. I’ve trained Otis to comewhen called while he’s swimming, so thatI don’t have to worry about him swimmingtoo far. During one hike, Otis got toswim in Sargent Mountain Pond, which,at 1300 ft elevation, is Maine’s oldestmountain glacial pond. I do advise thatyou avoid taking your Boykin to Mt Desert’socean cliff trails. They’re absolutelysafe if you stay on the trail. But they weretorturous to Otis, whom I had to leash,because he wanted to leap off the cliff toswim in the ocean! I even kept him awayfrom the lower rocky shores and tidalpools because the surf would have beentoo strong for him. If you follow precautionssuch as these, you and your Boykinshould have a grand old time on the hikingtrails. Don’t forget to bring your camera,too!
