PREFACEWaste Management poses manifold challenges. Most local governments and urbanagencies have, time and again, identified particularly solid waste management as amajor problem that has reached proportions requiring drastic measures. We can observe three key trends with respect to solid waste:• Increase in shear volume of waste generated by urban residents• Change in the quality or make-up of waste generated, and• The disposal/method of waste collected, by land-fill, incineration etc.It is critical to adopt a broad approach in developing a working framework for solidwaste management (SWM). This covers the social, economic, technology, politicaland administrative dimensions. For instance the social dimension of SWM involveswaste minimization; the economic dimension of SWM involves waste recycling; thetechnology dimension of SWM involves waste disposal; and the political andadministrative dimensions cuts across all the three issues of minimization, recyclingand disposal.‘ S’ for Solid‘ W’ for Waste‘ M’ for ManagementBut SWM is not an isolated phenomenon that can be easily compartmentalized andsolved with innovative technology or engineering. It is particularly an urban issuethat is closely related, directly or indirectly, to a number of issues such as urbanlifestyles, resource consumption patterns, jobs and income levels, and other socioeconomicand cultural issues. All these issues have to be brought together on acommon platform in order to ensure a long-term solution to Solid waste.Having completed seven sensitisation workshops across different metros &mini-metros cities like:Garbage truck blast, blaze remind thatyou can't throwjust anything in the trash• Mumbai • Chennai • Hyderabad • Kolkata • Guwahati • Pune • Ahmedabad

QUOTATIONArjun Mirdha - Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing, JCB says, “SolidWaste forms the core of all environmental problems. Effective and efficientmanagement of waste can turn the problem of wastes into a source of wealth”.Disposal of waste in a safe and cost effective manner is becoming increasinglyimportant worldwide. JCB, in keeping with its tradition, has taken an initiativetowards addressing the issue of waste management in India. We have a great rangeof machine and attachments for waste handling and are holding seminars in variousmetro cities.Amit Gossain - Associate Vice President, Marketing & BusinessDevelopment, JCB has been continuously contributing and demonstrating itsstrong commitment in contributing towards a sustainable development byorganizing solid waste management seminars. Inadequate solid waste treatment isone of the biggest ecological problems in the country and these seminars will help usto understand better the current practices of waste management as well as inidentifying alternatives for the current solid waste management system. The only wayto have sustainable long term growth is to remain "GREEN" which is not only vital forindustries but also for society at large and this should start with immediate chewablesteps.R.A. Rajeev - Additional Municipal Commissioner City & SWM adds that,”There has been a major shift in thinking at the international level about wastemanagement policies & practices. Now, waste is more increasingly treated as aresource rather than sheer garbage. We have to ensure that these changes in wastemanagement policy and practices world-over are incorporated in the Indian contextas efficiently and effectively as possible.”Satya Swaroop - Project Director of Global Forum for Disaster Reduction says,“Waste Management is one of the major areas of concern. Various strategies havebeen laid down for the management of solid waste by the government and severalattempts were made to improve the same. But it seems inadequate as per the presentscenario is concerned."As there will be no end to this mismanagement we hope the Seminar will lay downnew and bold approaches in terms of preparedness, connectivity amongcommunities, corporate and governments. During its sessions and deliberations, theSeminar will highlight the genesis of the Platform for Public Private Partnership(P4PPP) in waste management and mitigation, which is the most pressing need of thehour," Swaroop added.Dr. Amiya Kumar Sahu - President, NSWAI says, “Sustainability of anyenvironmental project needs the analysis of 3 E’s (Ethics, Environment andEconomy). Since every individual has to change their attitude through Ethics toprotect Environment and undoubtedly should develop Economy for sustaining theenvironmental projects.”For further details please contact:Satya Swaroop,Project Directorsatya@newmediacomm.bizTelephone: +91 22 65276930Telefax: +91 22 29208888Mobile: +91 98200 31016Prajwala Poojary,Sr. Executive, Special Projectsprajwala@newmediacomm.bizMobile: +91 98198 80751
