SONORA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
a report to the community | 2011
connections
MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
While Sonora Regional Medical Center can
be compared in size and quality
healthcare to many medical facilities
around the country, one thing sets us
apart—our connection to our community.
Our doctors, nurses and staff invest their
time, skills and hearts in sharing God’s love
through medicine and commitment.
We are proud to be a part of our
community and invite you to read about
our efforts.
From the President
As I look to 2012 and the future of Sonora Regional Medical Center, I am excited about the ways we
are advancing our mission: To share God’s love by providing physical, mental and spiritual healing.
Over the past three years, we have nurtured a culture of “Always.” When you fill out our
patient satisfaction survey, we are pleased to see that many of you check the “Always” box. “Always”
receive quality care without infection. “Always” have a nurse respond to your call button light.
“Always” receive courteous and compassionate care. This is our continued and collective goal—to
“Always” exceed your expectations.
As you will see in this year’s report to our community, we made great strides in 2011. We added
20 physicians and seven allied health professionals to our medical staff. We opened the Angels Camp
Prompt Care facility, established the Center for Joint Replacement, enhanced Pulmonary
Rehabilitation services, and launched a women’s health program with the Center for Breast Health.
I am delighted to report that we provided almost $30 million in free and low-cost health care to
thousands of area residents. We know we are making a difference in our communities.
We plan to make even greater advancements in 2012. We want our community to feel that
Sonora Regional Medical Center is “Always” an excellent place to receive care, an excellent place to
practice medicine, and an excellent place to work. Always.
Planting Seeds for Good Health
When was the last time you heard a
third-grader say that trying turnips and
doing jumping jacks were fun?
In 2010 and 2011, all third graders in Tuolumne County
Schools participated in Sonora Regional Medical Center’s
Family Fit School Outreach program. Every Tuesday and
Thursday for six weeks, two fitness and nutrition trainers
interacted with the students through innovative teaching
methods. Nine-year-old Amanda Teem remembers a giant
basket of fruits and vegetables.
“There were red peppers, yellow peppers, broccoli,
squash, apples, oranges, grapes…,” said Amanda.
“There were a lot of things some kids don’t normally
get to see, let alone taste,” said Jennifer Teem, Amanda’s
mother. “The children were introduced to a lot of new
flavors, smells and textures. They seemed to accept the
information better because it wasn’t coming from you—it
was coming from other friendly adults.”
The students were also taught things like how to read labels, why calories and serving sizes
matter, and the different names for sugar. Then, they went outside to learn non-traditional ways of
exercising. Playing with hula hoops and tossing Frisbees were especially popular.
“We learned not to be couch potatoes,” said Amanda. “It was fun and different. It was
something to look forward to.”
“We felt that if we could get into the schools, interact with eight- to 11-year olds and make it
fun, then we could deliver our messages of good nutrition and physical activity,” said Jodi
Rodriguez, registered dietician at the Medical Center. “We wanted them to make the connection
between what they do with their bodies and overall good health.”
“This program is absolutely planting seeds because it encourages our children to make healthy
choices with food and exercise,” said mom Jennifer. “Amanda’s younger brother cannot wait until it’s
his turn.”
Family Fit Program
Family Fit, a service of the Live Well Be
Well Center, is a school-based nutrition
and fitness program for elementary school
students. Exercise physiologists rotate
among Tuolumne County schools
providing nutrition and fitness education.
Cancer Patient
Support Fund
This fund provides financial support to
cancer patients who are going through
treatment and find themselves in need of
help. Helping patients with transportation
needs so that they can get to their
treatments is a top priority.
HOPE FOR HARRY
Imagine the helpless and hopeless feeling of being
diagnosed with two types of cancer and unable to seek
life-saving treatment.
71-year-old Harry Shaw, of Groveland, knows that
feeling all too well. His diagnoses were medically
challenging but not impossible to treat—if only he could
get to the medical facilities.
Harry was a prisoner in his own home. He couldn’t
drive but even if he could, he didn’t have the means for
transportation or lodging. He desperately needed
treatment to not only fight the cancers but also to help him
live a normal life. The cancer in Harry’s throat made it
almost impossible for him to swallow so he couldn’t eat.
The pain was miserable, but the fear of knowing that he
could choke to death was even worse.
“Without the help of the Cancer Patient Support
Fund, Harry would have been in a life-threatening
situation with no hope for change,” said Susan Balcarcel,
Cancer Center social worker. “We never gave up on him.”
The Cancer Fund provided gas cards so a volunteer
driver could take him to radiation treatments at Sonora Regional Medical Center. The fund also paid for
nutrition drinks until he received a stomach feeding tube and a week of lodging at a distant treatment
facility, when he required highly specialized care.
“Harry needed an advocate to find the right specialists to treat him,” said Balcarcel. “Harry’s quality
of life has improved and he now has a fighting chance to beat his cancers.”
Harry Shaw’s story is just one example of how the Cancer Patient Support Fund is making a
difference in our communities. In 2011, fund organizers raised more than $69,000.
“We use the fund when we can make a difference. There is no question that our Cancer Patient
Support Fund helps save lives,” says Balcarcel.
Foods fill stomachs and hearts
With less than a week until Thanksgiving,
Tuolumne County was in dire straits. The
Amador-Tuolumne Community Action
Agency’s (ATCAA) food bank put out an urgent call for
donations two days before its planned distribution. It was
to feed 1,200 families. The lack of donations also impacted
other non-profit groups that count on ATCAA for food
during the holidays.
“This was definitely the toughest year since the
recession hit in 2008,” said Bryan Lewis, chaplain and key
organizer of the Food for Families program.
On Monday, November 21 st , Medical Center
employees heeded the call. In less than three hours, they
collected, packed and distributed 45 barrels of food. It was
a part of their annual holiday food drive, but this year, there
was a sense of urgency.
“I always wonder how many are going to be in need
today,” said Nola Heflin, Seventh-day Adventist Community
Service director.
Nola has been with the organization since 1991. For her, the holiday food was what they call
“a boost.” They received many more food items than what they can normally get through regular
channels. They were able to add items that, hopefully, would not only fill stomachs but also raise
spirits.
“We get a lot of positive reaction from people,” said Heflin. “They say ‘I’m so glad that you’re
here. I’m so thankful for this and thank you so much.’”
In 2011, the Food for Families program raised 13,114 pounds of food. In addition to
Seventh-day Adventist Community Service, Food for Families distributes food and money to
Lighthouse Ministries and Interfaith.
“People are really hurting today,” said Lewis. “It is such a joy to be able to help others, and to
give and share—not just during the holidays but all year long.”
Food for Families
Food for Families is a yearly donation drive
that collects canned food for those in need
in Tuolumne County. This year, Medical
Center employees came together to raise
more than 13,000 pounds of food.
Project HOPE
Project HOPE is a free mobile clinic that
provides minor primary care to patients
who do not have medical insurance or have
a high deductible. The on-board nurse
practitioner provides minor assessment
and treatment, and can prescribe
medication. 9
th , 2011, was a day Mel Souza will
always remember. He had battled pain in
his mouth for several weeks due to a broken
tooth. His face was swollen and he was in excruciating
pain. His health insurance had expired and he didn’t have
money to spare. He was desperate.
His wife told him about the Project HOPE Mobile
Health Clinic, run by Sonora Regional Medical Center,
parked outside of Wal-Mart on Mondays and Fridays.
Nurse practitioner Sheila Monaghan examined Mel and
worried that it was more than just a toothache. He could
have infectious parotitis—an inflammation of the major
salivary gland located on the side of his face. She knew that
if she couldn’t get him to a dentist, he would have to go to
the Emergency Department.
“Mel needed to be seen,” said Monaghan. “The
situation could have become life-threatening if he waited
too long.”
She sent him to the Forest Road Dental Clinic, which
treats people without dental insurance and also provides emergency dental procedures for those on
Medi-Cal or CMSP.
“I was really impressed,” said Souza. “Sheila went above and beyond what she was required to
do. She treated me like an emergency case. Days later, I went back to the van to thank her.”
In 2011, the Medical Center provided 1,860 free patient visits at the Project HOPE Mobile
Health Clinic, 500 free sports physicals and 81 free dental procedures.
“I have a strong place in my heart for the people of our community,” said Monaghan. “I want
residents to know that we are here for anyone who has an unexpected medical condition and needs
free medical care.”

Tangible Love
When you see little Jackson Corum’s face light up, you
know there is a beautiful angel inside.
Jackson began life with a number of life-
threatening medical challenges. He needed a tracheostomy,
which is a surgical procedure to provide an airway, and is now
dependent on a ventilator. He has a seizure disorder that can
make breathing even harder. He also has neurological impairment.
As a result, he has been in the care of specialized facilities
since birth. He has never been home.
“The first couple of months were really hard,” said April
Corum, a lab scientist at the Medical Center and Jackson’s
mother. “You’re so shell-shocked about a lot of the devastating
things happening with your child, and there is so much that is
unknown about your future.”
April and her family spent a great deal of time with Jackson
when he was at Stanford. The cost of food and transportation was
daunting. When Jackson was moved to another facility in
Campbell, California, the expenses were even greater.
“The Chaplains Fund really blessed us,” said Corum. “The
expenses of being out of town, to see him, have been tough.”
April and her husband received gas vouchers for fuel and also food cards for their nights living in
temporary housing. The fund, when combined with donations from co-workers and the community,
enabled the family to be with Jackson as much as possible.
The Chaplains Fund was created to help families in urgent and critical situations. It helps patients
and employees fund their immediate needs, like food, shelter, temporary lodging, heat, transportation,
and prescriptions.
In 2011, the fund disbursed more than $39,226 to 173 families in three counties.
“The Chaplains Fund is a tangible way to express God’s love,” said Bryan Lewis, Medical Center
chaplain. “It touches real people and truly makes a difference. We call it ‘love with skin on it.’”
Chaplain’s Fund
The Chaplain’s Fund is designated for the
support of patients and employees who
require a little financial help. The fund,
which is administered by the Medical
Center Chaplains, helps meet immediate
financial needs. Royce, Tyler & April Corum
Quality of care
Providing the highest quality and safest health care for the residents
of Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties is our priority at Sonora
Regional Medical Center and Adventist Health. Corporately and
locally, we’ve invested extensive resources in process improvement,
information technology and scientific analysis to create an environment of
safety and healing.
The Medical Center’s dedication to quality care has been recognized by the
national Hospital Quality Improvement Demonstration project (HQID).
The Medical Center received five HQID awards for top improvement,
attainment or both in the clinical areas of heart attack, heart failure,
pneumonia and surgical care.
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, “A Process
of Care measure shows how often hospitals give recommended treatments
known to get the best results for patients with certain medical conditions or
surgical procedures.” This is one way to measure quality of care. The scores
to the right represent the percentage of patients who received the
recommended treatments for their condition. Sonora Regional Medical
Center continues to exceed the 80 th percentile among peer hospitals for
heart failure, community acquired pneumonia, surgical care, chest pain and
