OCTG Division – R&D Premium ConnectionsVAM Technical NotesCompatibility between VAM connections

VAM connections cannot be run with anyother VAM connections, except NEW VAMwith Old VAM connections (VAM Std, VAM AF,VAM AG and VAM ATAC) and Casing VAMTOP family connections (VAM TOP, VAM TOPHT, VAM TOP HC and VAM TOP FE).When these products are Isolated andnamed "Nx" they are not compatible with anyproducts. For VAM TOP Tubing, VAM FJL, VAMSLIJ-II, VAM SFC, VAM HW ST and VAM SL,pipes with the same diameter may havedifferent threads tapers or threaded lengthsdepending on their wall thickness and are notcompatible.Mixing of VAM connections is notrecommended, but sometimes it's possible tomake-up some connections together withprecautions described below. The usage of across over is strongly recommended whenpossible and in all case where connections arenot compatible.OD B(mm) B(mm)NEW VAM VAM Std5" 116.0 118.05 ½" 119.5 120.06 5/8" 122.0 125.07" 129.0 130.07 5/8" 133.5 135.08 5/8" 135.0 138.09 5/8" 135.0 138.010 ¾" 136.0 138.011 ¾" 136.0 138.013 3/8" 137.5 138.0Compatibility between VAM andButtress connectionRecommendationsThe assembly of VAM or NEW VAMconnections with BUTTRESS connections isnot recommended since the thread profile ofVAM/NEW VAM has more clearance than aBUTTRESS. However if no choice is left, andif the connection is located at a non strategicplace (below the packer for example), end usercan use the following method at their own risk. It's also to the end user to decide to"bakerlock" the connection. This kind of assemblies has got nosealing properties.Make up of VAM/NEW VAM Pin withBUTTRESS box enda) stamp a triangle at a distance (B) from endof VAM or NEW VAM pin end. Height oftriangle = 9.5mmb) make up tolerance :mini = the face of coupling at the base oftriangleMaxi = the face of coupling at 3mm over thebaseNote : it is strongly recommended to cut thenose of VAM or NEW VAM after stamping thetriangle. When making up of 2 VAM pin ends intothe Buttress box, it is absolutely necessary tocut minimum one pin nose.Make up of BUTTRESS Pin with VAMor NEW VAM box endCaution : it is normally absolutely forbidden tomake-up a BUTTRESS pin end with a VAM orNEW VAM box end. But, if a customer has gotno choice, he can decide at his own risk to usethe following method.a) Ensure that pin end root threads arevanishing on OD pipe.b) For make-up on VAM or NEW VAM, grindout the Buttress triangle and draw a line atthe (B) value.Compatibilty between VAM connections Page 2 / 4

VAM TOP connectionsCasing VAM TOP, VAM TOP HT andVAM TOP HC threads are interchangeable(seal taper = 20°). Nevertheless due to the gapbetween D1 / D2 values of VAM TOP HT /VAM TOP HC connections with VAM TOP theusage of a cross-over is mandatory. VAM TOP casing is compatible withVAM TOP HT / VAM TOP HCParticular case of 4 ½"Same Thread Profile for VAM TOPcasing, VAM TOP HT, VAM TOP HC but VAMTOP tubing has is own Thread ProfileSame Seal Profile for VAM TOP HT andVAM TOP HC (20° seal angle) but VAM TOPtubing has is own Seal Profile (50% sealtaper).Torque value is different for eachconnection 4 ½” VAM TOP HC / HT is NOT compatiblewith 4 ½” VAM TOP tubing. 4 ½” VAM TOP HC does not offercompression advantage on 4 ½” VAM TOP“standard” and does not exist any moreVAM TOP FECases exist, where there is a need toassemble VAM TOP and VAM TOP FEthreads, for example hydraulic test plugs orpossibly accessories. This kind of assembly isto be considered very cautiously since theresulting fatigue performance can no longer beguaranteed : it is therefore not a recommendedpractice.Due to the specificity of VAM TOP FEthread profile compared to VAM TOP, VAMTOP pin ends can be assembled with VAMTOP FE couplings, but VAM TOP FE pin endscan not be made up with VAM TOP box ends.See following compatibility chart.VAM TOPPinVAM TOP FEPinVAM TOP FEBoxCompatibleVAM TOPNot compatibleBoxCompatibility chart between VAM TOP & VAM TOP FE connectionsCompatibilty between VAM connections Page 4 / 4
